Can also call Angel Stadium and complain
They gave me some hogwash about contractural obligations or something like that; I wouldn't be surprised if MLB.com has exclusive rights to broadcast all spring training games live and maybe other teams also are having their games delayed.

I am really surprised!
We need to get this in front of him somehow. For the Angels to tape delay ST games on Arte's own station! is frankly unbelievable.
Let's keep up the pressure to every outlet we can. Does Angels' communications have an e-mail address?

No it wasn't
830 was playing/streaming some talkshow crap.
The stream was defintely talkshow. Over-the-air, I couldn't tell... the radio in my office got more static than signal.
Great move, Arte, try to rebrand for LA, and then move your broadcasts to a station that you can't get in LA.

What a bitter disappointment
When Arte bought KLAA, I assumed it was to have a radio outlet in which the Angels had top priority. I think we all did. To discover that brokered radio programs, mere infomercials, were to take precedence makes me wonder why he bought the station in the first place. For all its faults, at least KSPN played every inning of every game in real time. Are Ducks broadcasts to take precedence during the regular season?
If "contractual obligations" are the problem, then Arte should not have entered into such contracts. If he needs such contracts to make the station pay, then he shouldn't have left KSPN.
It's a great disappointment to me that Arte obviously does not take radio seriously as an outlet for the team.
The thing is, when he changed the call letters to KLAA, he raised our expectations unrealistically. If he'd changed them to K$$$, then we'd have known to expect this.

I hear you....This is BULL SHIT
Everyone that goes to SPRING TRAINING this year, If you see Arte tell him, "WHAT THE FUCK ARTURO? WHY THE HELL ARE WE NOT GETTING THE ANGELS BROADCASTS LIVE ON KLAA. ALL US FANS THOUGHT THE STATION WOULD MAKE THE ANGELS THE PRIORITY SINCE YOU NAMED IT AFTER THEM. THIS SHIT BETTER CHANGE NOW BECAUSE YOU ARE LOOSING ALOT OF LISTENERS BY DELAYING THE GAMES UNTIL 6PM. SHIT IF YOU WANT YOU CAN PLAY THEM BOTH LIVE AND DELAYED SINCE IT IS YOUR STATION, ISNT IT?"

This is one more.
I am sure it is just growing pains for the new station and sorting things out, let's cut them slack this season but not next...

I salute your forbearance, but . . .
Even if you are entirely accurate in your assessment, however, I believe it is important to make it crystal-clear to Angels management that this is not okay.

update from Tim Mead
"The Angels received a number of e-mails Thursday from fans who are upset that the new radio home of the team, 830, is broadcasting spring-training games on a tape-delayed basis, with afternoon games airing in the evening.
The games are streamed live on the team's website, but listeners must pay a subscription fee to access the broadcasts. Tim Mead, Angels vice president of communications, says the team is working on a plan that would enable fans to access the Internet broadcasts for free."

and and . . .
I like Tim Mead, but this is just burnt fries (i.e., doing something ineffective or senseless to mask one's unwillingness or inability to do something meaningful).
And and and: this reaction from fans could not possibly have come as a surprise to the Angels front office, which strongly suggests that they don't really give a crap.
by rspencer on Feb 29, 2008 11:46 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Here is why the games are delayed..
He said that when the Angels bought KLAA/830, they assumed the contracts of syndicated radio programs and cannot pre-empt the afternoon programs.
He also mentioned that live spring training games are a rarity. I guess it is a luxury we will have to do without this spring....
by HowTheGrichStoleChristmas on Feb 29, 2008 1:51 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Any indication if these obligations
(Nine day games in April will require pre-empting the Doyle and/or Savage programs.)
by jane doe on Feb 29, 2008 2:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Really?
Also, don't they have syndication contracts with the programs airing after 6 PM?
Are we then to understand that all day games will be tape-delayed, even during the season? And what about the Ducks games? Are they going to take precedence during the regular season too?
I think I smell a rat. And not a Rally Rat, either. What they say does not ring true. And even if it were, if they had been dealing with us fans in good faith they wouldn't have kept it such a deep dark secret until 2 PM Thursday.
Bill Plunkett is a beat writer, not a fan advocate. He needs to stay on good terms with team management. So of course he's going to swallow the Angel Kool-Aid. Live spring training games a rarity? Well, they've been standard operating procedure for the Angels as far back as their first year on KLAC, as I recall. Jerk.

Even so, I'd like to see a reporter be a bit more skeptical, especially when skepticism is so eloquently called for.

Conservative talk radio
Let's remember that Arte's a good businessman. I'm sure he didn't buy the station to lose money.
Someone said that they are going to try to get the games streamed on the internet. That'll work.....
I'm confident something will be worked out. I'm more concerned about the coercion used by MLB.com to get us to pay for gameday audio. That's all manipulation.
by wumbug on Feb 29, 2008 3:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Sure, it's Arte's call
But it strains credulity to say that he was forced into this situation--because it's his station, and his team.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please, but wasn't 830 AM all Spanish when he bought the station? Isn't it all English now? If this is true, then none of the current contracts could have been inherited when he bought the station.
Therefore, since Arte is a good businessman, we must assume that he did not unwittingly commit elsewhere time that he intended to dedicate to Angels spring baseball. In other words, this situation was formulated intentionally, not accidentally or inadvertently. They chose to do this, despite the certain displeasure of their most ardent fans.
One can only assume that they chose to do this in order to maximize station income; no one is going to convince me that KLAA would actually run a deficit by broadcasting Angels ST games at the same time they are played. Put another way, when presented with a choice between making some money while serving the fans on the one hand, and making more money while disregarding the fans on the other, he made the latter choice.
Now, Arte is perfectly within his rights to do this, but he can't have it both ways. He can't do this and at the same time say that he is a benevolent, fan-oriented owner.
That's why I'm not letting go of this thing so easily. If they had been straightforward about this decision from the start, then I'd bitch once and then move on. But the team management is not acting in good faith with us fans here, and after the rat fiasco, they have lost the benefit of the doubt. I'm tired of the team management treating its fans as if they were rubes.
I'm not sure why you assign the blame for this to MLB.com. We wouldn't have to pay for Gameday Audio to hear the game in real time if KLAA were broadcasting them that way. They may be in cahoots, sure, but I'm sure they don't provide Gameday Audio to lose money.

Maybe if well all pay enough
The contracts thing is a cop out. IMO.
I cant get internet at work and ALOT of people cant. Thats not a fix.
Its simple play the games live on another station or preempt the talk shows. Till then Im boycotting all sponsors on KLAA. I will post a list others should boycott them to, Atie understands money lets show him Angel fans effect money.

THESE ARE SPRING GAMES RELAX
by Rev Halofan on Mar 1, 2008 2:13 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's two times
People have every right to complain. You said it yourself before. If the Angels truly want to be elite, they broadcast all games live. Not every spring game has to be a money maker, ad-wise. Each broadcast should be looked upon either as investing in the fan base or their own ad for the team as a whole.
Moreno owns the station. He could change this if he wants, even if there were existing contracts, which I don't believe for a minute there was, these programs weren't there when he purchased.

Sorry kid
Spring games have been broadcast for as long as I can remember. Its also the ONLY time I get to hear about alot of players. As by your snide worded poll your very alone thinking, not broadcasting spring games are no big deal. To real fans who like to hear our team it is.
by SFV88 on Mar 1, 2008 1:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Am I missing something?
And where's the link that allows me to receive the free broadcast via the Angels website? I go there and they're trying to charge me $15.
I'm sure there's some sort of solution out there, but I'm a little frustrated that I'm having to jump through hoops just to listen to my team.
