Naps & Mathis, sittin' in a tree

A sweet lil' story in the OC Register. Excerpt:

They're both from Florida, but there's not much to share there. Napoli is from Fort Lauderdale, a place popular among spring breakers; Mathis is from Marianna, a place popular among nap takers.

"We have a Wal-Mart," Mathis says. "Actually, it's a Super Wal-Mart. That's the biggest attraction we have going on."

Napoli visited his friend in Florida's panhandle in December to go deer hunting. Surprisingly, he never had shot a high-powered rifle, despite living so near Miami.

Mathis taught him how to shoot, even allowing him to take aim at a squirrel that was scurrying in the back yard.

The actual hunt, however, was about as exciting as the explanation of the infield fly rule.

"He's a lousy hunting guide," Napoli says. "He never put me on one deer."

Says Mathis: "That's a sore subject. I was more upset than anybody. He was pumped up. His shot was good, his aim was on. We just didn't see any dadgum deer."

A nice Spring Training tale.
