How Many Angels in a List of the Top 50 Young Players?
Two? Three? Now, what if I told you that the list was made by ... Rob Neyer.
That's right, zero Angels in Neyer's list of the Top 50 players over the next five years. You had to be both experienced and young to qualify.
Included in the list of 2Bmen ahead of 24-year-old Howie ".306/.332/.435 lifetime" Kendrick:
24) 24-year-old Dustin ".299/.363/.422 in Fenway" Pedroia.
25) 25-year-old Iain ".274/.351/.447 in Arlington" Kinsler.
28) 26-year-old Kelly ".276/.375/.457 in Atlanta" Johnson.
44) 28-year-old Dan ".245/.326/.479" Uggla.
50) 22-year-old Asdrubal ".283/.354/.421" Cabrera.
Also, Jered Weaver and Casey Kotchman are 25.

The Irony of Rob Neyer
There was a major sympathy-telethon on Neyer's behalf (as well as for Keith Law) on many websites this Winter over the BBWAA's refusal to admit them into their ranks. I was actually shocked that they were not members, but there writing on the web is discounted over writers who work for established print vehicles.
The irony here is the "HIGH ROAD" that stat-minded websites CLAIM to take - dismissing so many mainstream reporters for being uninformed, biased hacks. Wait a minute - that sounds like every SABRbator on the net to me.
While Neyer crunches his numbers well and provides the occasional insight available nowhere else, to imply he is not a biased fanboy with an emotional attachment to some players and teams and an irrational distaste for others - the SABR community's denial at the role emotion plays in their analysis is laughable.

Ha
He also left off Felix Hernandez, Kazmir, Cain, Lincecum, Alex Rios, etc etc. He left off many talented young hitters/pitchers.
He actually ranked Melky Cabrera over Morneau and all the other deserving players he didn't even include on that list. That list is a complete joke.

Well I mean thats understandable
Melky has won more MVPs than Morneau's one. Like two or three right?
Wait wait... no
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

Hm
Where the heck is Cole Hamels? Last time I checked, he's pretty damn good...and just turned 24 a few months ago. He's apparently not worthy of being on this list, yet Melky Cabrera and some other scrubs are. *rolls eyes*
Neyer is an idiot.

Melky's inclusion
is laughable

Great Quote
We're still waiting for Cabrera's first .400-plus slugging percentage and he's not an on-base wizard, either.
Sea-at-ha-ha-ha that's funny.

He says "No prospects"
because "they've not played an inning in the majors, and even once they reach the majors they might need a year or two or three to become great major leaguers. Which disqualifies them from making our five-year list.".
And then he lists Eva Longoria at #22 and says "this might be too high, as Longoria hasn't played a single inning in the majors.".
What a turd.
We'll be fine.

Read that wrong
He ranks him #20
We'll be fine.

Can't follow his own rules
He says "Everything counts. Everything includes hitting, fielding, running and everything else we know about".
Then he ranks Jhonny freakin Peralta #21 saying "Doesn't get a lot of respect, probably because of his superstar teammates and his questionable defense..."
File this "list" under meaningless garbage.
We'll be fine.

p.s.
John Lackey is pretty good too I think.

List of things I could care less about than Rob Neyer:
................nope, I've got nothing.
Wake me up on opening day.

Pretty good laugh...
Just a total messed up list. No Lackey or Weaver? And really Howie is better than those other 2nd baseman.
Another great article from the Eastern Seaboard Programing Network
You guys in California really do live in heaven, the Angels are in town for more than just six games and there is Jack in the Box within 200 miles.

FWIW. . .
Bill James does a similar list, does a top fifty and rates young talent on an A, B,C system. KROD and Weaver are mentioned as "A's", w/ KROD falling in the 26-30 category. Weaver is in the 50-75 range
Howie and Kotch are "B" grades, outside of the top 75.
I agree with most of you that Howie should be up there, and is better than three or so of the other 2b's (maybe more).
Kotchman needs to play a healthy season before he makes any such list.
As far as Neyer's, there are only 7 pitchers on the list, and Weaver is hardly a top ten. There are several better young pitchers that were left off (cain, hamels, felix, fausto carmona, Lincecum. . . and a lot of young closers too)

Melky Cabrera
this isn't a matter of "yeah, he's a good player, but maybe not this good."
No. Melky Cabrera SUCKS. He's never been good. He never will be. He's nothing better than a 4th outfielder on a good day. You're still waiting for the .400 SLG because it's not coming. He includes Melky and then says "he can't hit for power or average, but he's young."
Guess what, Neyer. I can't hit for power or average, either. And I'm even YOUNGER. Where's my inclusion?
One player from the AL West. ONE. And it's somehow Ian Kinsler? East coast bias like mad.
What a load of shit. This entire list couldn't be a bigger abortion.

Quick, Acuda, counter Neyer's travesty with your list
and top it with your boys (and ours) Kendry and Sean-Rod!
I've given up shitting bricks over a friggin' list. Useless, subjective, wastes of space. Why ulcer-ate myself worrying about what the idiot Neyer (and other East Coast pundits) has to say. How that effete prick can rank Uggla, Kinsler, Johnson over HK is beyond travesty. Check that list further and you'd probably still find Joe Charbonneau on it.

Uggla, Pedroia, and Melky are extremely questionable
All the others are defensible (although I disagree with some of them).
In all honesty, I wouldn't include any of our guys on this list. Kendrick would come close, but probably wouldn't make the cut for me.
Neyer is biased. He's biased towards an ideology of OBP, SLG, VORP, WARP, etc. and maybe the Royals (although he avoided including Billy Butler who would've made my list).
I really don't think he dislikes the Angels and sits around plotting about how to piss us off. I think the Angels tend not to subscribe to his philosophy, and thus develop fewer players who Neyer gets excited about. Yes, that's a form of bias, but I really don't see any evidence that he dislikes the Angels regardless of their players (that is, just for being the Angels). If they developed players he thought were good, I think he'd say so.
Neyer has previously been accused of being a Billy-Beane-lover around here, but I don't see any A's on the list. (Of course, that's probably justified, but if he really was biased, we'd probably see Barton.)
As far as East coast bias, I just don't buy it. He's from Kansas City and lives in Oregon and has said that he has rarely ventured into Bristol and really doesn't know many of the other ESPN guys very well. But I could be wrong. He could be a closet Yankee fan, for all I know.
I'm not saying Neyer is 100% objective, because he's clearly not. RevHalofan is right about that. Neyer has guys who he's pimped in the past (Sizemore) and he doesn't want to be wrong, so he continues to pimp them. Emotions certainly do play a part. All I'm saying is that I don't think he has anything against (or for) particular teams or regions of the country.
I'm curious - where would you guys rank Kendrick, Weaver, Lackey, etc. on this list? Would you really rather have Kendrick than Alex Gordon over the next five years? I'd trade Kendrick for Gordon in a heartbeat.
by Dogman on Mar 27, 2008 10:32 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
So...
You'd take the 3rd Baseman who hit .725 OPS in the Majors at 23, over the 2nd Baseman who put up a .797 OPS in the Majors at 23, despite the fact that 2B is one of the hardest positions to fill offensively, while 3B is comparitively easier?
I'm not sure why you think this would be a good idea. As far as where I'd rank Kendrick, probably in Pedroia's spot, bumping everybody down a peg.

on our team, yes
We move Figgy to second and plug Gordon in at third. We get a more traditional 3B in Gordon and a solid 2B in Figgy. Kinda like we woulda done had we traded for M.Carbrera (not to say at ALL that A. Gordon = M. Carbrera, just making a point).
you look so good in red

No one is saying that he's biased against the Angels
rather that he is profoundly ignorant of the level of talent amongst certain teams, and nonetheless masquerades under the the guise of a wise and informed sports pundit who speaks for all of baseball.

FYI from a chat on 3/31
Justin (Redlands, CA): Speaking of your list, I noticed you left off Howie Kendrick? Care to explain why?
SportsNation Rob Neyer: (2:23 PM ET ) Wouldn't you like to know! Actually, I'd like to know, too. I started with WARP -- from Baseball Prospectus -- and unless I missed something, Kendrick just doesn't do too well. Perhaps because of his defense, perhaps because he doesn't walk much, and probably both. I think he might have been the least defensible omission.
Sea-at-ha-ha-ha that's funny.
