Escobar possibly done for the year

Kelvim Escobar revealed Wednesday that he has a tear in his right shoulder that could require season-ending surgery.
Escobar ceased throwing after experiencing discomfort in his shoulder Sunday. "I'm concerned, I don't know what's going to happen, I don't even know if I'll be able to pitch again," Escobar said. "I'm still young. I'll be 32 in two weeks, but retirement is getting into my head, because it's hard to rehab. I want to be out there playing, and I've done everything I can do to be healthy." According to the Los Angeles Times, Escobar plans to see if two weeks off improve his shoulder before likely seeing a specialist to determine whether surgery is necessary.

My Question is...

why the fuck didn't he have the surgery in October or November? This is the same shoulder that was bothering him at the end of last year. If there's a tear, why didn't he get it fixed? He'd already signed his contract extension. With surgery last fall, he might have been back in August.

Is he getting the same medical advice as Bartolo Colon, who basically lost two years (and counting) while he attempted (in vain) to rehab a shoulder that needs to be surgically repaired?

I'm honestly not surprised.

Not to mention a wrist injury to Beltre. I doubt Sexson makes a comeback. SO yeah, the Mariners can't hit their way out of a paper bag,

Sexson's .217 BABIP last year

Suggests otherwise mr. dog. That's about .080 worth of bad luck and thus some positive regression you can expect. Not that Sexson doesn't suck, and he's a year older, but it's hard to get much more unlucky than a .217 babip and if you're banking on that happening two seasons in a row you're betting on the wrong pony. Wilkerson isn't appreciably worse than Guillen as his defensive upgrade offsets the slight difference in OPS.

Beltre, well, who knows how that will turn out. If he does have to get surgery that would definitely be a disaster, his doctors don't seem to think playing will make it worse, it will just cause him pain and it's all a question of whether he can stand it or not.

And I'll say it again, Jered Weaver is overrated. Even last years numbers are overrated, despite most of his peripherals normalizing from his ridiculously lucky 06 effort, his FB/HR% was still way higher than league average and will regress eventually. Once that happens he'll be the 4.00 ERA pitcher he actually is. That's your ace for a while, have fun.

'cept Felix isn't our ace anymore

And he shouldn't be expected to be at his age. You can't honestly compare Felix to Weaver, Felix has so much more potential than Weaver does and at a younger age. Potential that was showing itself prior to his injury last season. He never quite got his release position back to normal after coming back off the DL and the movement on his 2 seamer/slider suffered. Compare his first two starts to any of his post-DL starts, the difference in marked. Felix can be a dominating force, Weaver is just a flyball guy with good control and okay velocity, as well as questionable durability.

And yeah, the Mariners would be a joke, but the injuries to the Angels have changed the whole dynamic of the division. Even Oakland might be in the mix of things now. You better hope Lackey comes back when he's supposed to and throws at 100% when he does.

Wlikerson

That "not appreciably" worse OPS was generated in Texas. Enjoy your RFer who can't hit above 240 and your wind mill 1st baseman. The offense is terrible and is worse than last year. I doubt you even watch the games though given some of your takes.

Your Weaver rant is tired, and frankly he is our #3, but now he is our #2 and has outperformed Princess year in and year out. Questionable durability? Princess is on the DL every year. Golden Spikes award, tied Whitey Ford's rookie record, what exactly has Felix done?

Sea-at-ha-ha-ha that's funny.

by hauldog on Mar 30, 2008 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess you could make a case

that Weaver is better at things that he has no control over. Hernandez K's more, BB's about the same and get's almost twice as many groundballs. The difference is HR rate, which is largely out of a pitchers control. Oh, and by the way, Hernandez was on the DL once in his career. That hardly constitutes being on the DL "every year". Good luck finding ANY team in baseball that would take Jared Weaver over Felix Hernandez.

As far as the offense goes, the Angels are a Guerrero injury away from offensive bottom dwelling status.

My personal opinion. The M's offense is average. And the Angels are right there with them.

I don't think the Mariners are better than the Angels. But it's a joke to suggest that the Angels are leaps and bounds better than the Mariners. They aren't.

by faceplant_04 on Mar 30, 2008 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love how confident you Mariner fans are

First of all, given a choice between the two I'd take Felix, never said I would. I just want to get that out of the way. When it comes to actual performance and not potential Weaver has simply out performed Felix.

The Mariners offense is no where near average. It just plain sucks. You lost Guillen added Wilkerson and traded the best candidate for any offensive improvement. The Mariners do not walk and they do not hit for power.

All your little projection systems are far from perfect and do not take into account the improvement the young Angel hitters will achieve. PECOTA is a joke. I laugh every year when see the PECOTA projections for the Angels, or any of them for that matter.

I enjoy that you guys are coming around so much before a meaningful game has been played. Enjoy second place and what I figure to be a 500 campaign. Your enthusiasm is admired. Since the team I root for has won 3 of the last 4 AL West Crowns my enthusiasm is warranted, and not unexpected.

Sexson isn't very good

But he's leaps and bounds better than his numbers suggested last year. The dropoff in offensive production should be offset by the improved defense.

Oh, and Beltre's wrist injury was hobbling him so badly that he only managed to post a .955 spring OPS. Terrible I tell you, terrible!

by faceplant_04 on Mar 30, 2008 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Every little tweak

will result in a couple games off and a potential loss of momentum and production. Minus Beltre the Mariners offense is Ichiro! and a little league squad.

this sucks but can be a blessing in...

disguise. it gives saunders the chance to start for a full season. santana has to shit or get off the pot and there are tremendous opportunities for moseley, adenhart, thompson, o'day to firmly entrench themselves on this staff. if he misses the entire season bring him back next year as our closer (less stress on the arm) and let frankie walk and get draft picks or trade frankie.

by thejd on Mar 26, 2008 1:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I guess I'm the pessimist

But this is bad, bad, bad. Garland won't reproduce Escobar's '07 campaign. Weaver could. We need Lackey to be Lackey, but he's hurt. Santana's a giant mind fuck. Moseley is what WE THOUGHT HE WAS (thank you Dennis Green). He's not ever going to be above a #5 pitcher. So by saying he has an opportunity, he has an opportunity to chew innings. That doesn't necessarily lead to wins.

Hopefully Adenhart can figure shit out and improve when he gets sent to Triple-A. The big opportunities are for O'Day and Thompson. Hopefully one of them can step up and be our next Shields. I'm still completely sketchy on Scot. He needs to prove he can be healthy and CONSISTENT. Until then, I'm completely for keeping Frankie.

Stay positive, Kelvim. We need your arm. FUCK.

by Sethy on Mar 26, 2008 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

What of Saunders?

You left him out of your list. Lackey may be hurt but it is not (knock on wood) a problem that will keep him out for an extended period of time. Garland and Moseley may not be Escobar quality, but they can easily keep up with the 4.4-ish ERA that Silva, Washburn and Bautista are likely to put up. Saunders, I feel, will be better than that this year. Weaver has thus far kept pace fairly well with Hernandez in terms of production. If previous experience holds true, Bedard will get injured at some point this season, trading off for Lackey's missed time. The big question is really whether Santana can get his act together. If so, he is perfectly capable of putting up Escobar-like numbers. If not, we can stick with 4.4-ish production from Moseley, or give Adenhart a shot if we feel he's up to it.

Our rotation still maintains significant upside over Seattle, even if mean projections probably put the two squads as equal sans-Escobar. And our lineup remains superior to theirs, especially when you take upside and depth into consideration. We remain the best team in our division.

Where this really hurts is the playoffs. If we don't have a third solid starter to go with Lackey-Weaver come September, we may be in trouble.

~Till the Halo burns out...

wow, didnt think about that

"Where this really hurts is the playoffs. If we don't have a third solid starter to go with Lackey-Weaver come September, we may be in trouble."

i think Garland is a solid 3rd option though. I've got faith in the guy... he played in a park where the ball jumps out, and he had a crappy team behind him
with a good team behind him, he won 18 games- twice.

call me crazy, but i'm not worried about him, considering our park and our team.
Lackey, Weaver, Garland is a competiive front 3. Add in a good year from Saunders, and we'll be good to go. I'd still take Adenhart over Santana at this point.... we'll have to see how he does.

Bring up Wood!!!

by howiestheman on Mar 26, 2008 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I feel the same way about Garland, truth be told.

But it's always hard to say about stuff like that, and his splits have actually been significantly worse outside US Cellular the last two years. That said, it doesn't change the fact that he had an ERA+ of 112 last year, which translates roughly into a 4.00 ERA at Angel stadium. We'll see what happens with him.

Season over?

Can an aceless team actually succeed? Could a team with a mediocre rotation to start the season (let's say, Ramon Ortiz, Jarrod Washburn, Aaron Sele, Kevin Appier) actually go on to win 99 games (or 101 Pythag wins) and the World Series? Not a chance.

Can a team that has:
> Escobar for only 7 starts
> a starting 1st baseball with over 600 ABs and puts up an OPB/SLG/OPS line of .325/.371/.697
> a CF with over 400 ABs and ends up at .271/.374/.645
> a LF with 575 ABs and .308/.435/.743
Wow. That team sucks. Not like they'd win 95 games (or 93 Pythag wins) and go to the ALCS. No way.

Get rid of Quinlan

by edhoo on Mar 26, 2008 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The 05 rotation can't be duplicated

In all seriousness, there is simply no way the Angels can repeat the pitching feats of the 2005 team (3 starters with ERAs under 3.50, another at 3.74) and a team that gave up the 2nd fewest runs in the AL. That's not happening this year.
If the Angels have any chance this year the offense will have to really step up. But the Angels have never been an offensive machine under Sosh. In all the years he's been manager the Angels have only had two decent run scoring teams (the 2002 and 2007 teams, both finishing 4th in the league in runs scored). You have to go back to the Reggie years for the last time an Angels team won with its offense (the 1982 team finishing 1st in OBP, 2nd in SLG, 2nd in runs, 2nd in homers).

Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!

2004 wasn't a bad year for offense either

Scored ~850 runs, the same number as 2002/2007. Which is even more impressive when you consider how much offense that team lost to injuries (Glaus/Salmon missed most of the season, Anderson misses a bunch of time, Bengie Molina misses time, etc.)

Latin Specialist

Escobar said that by April 15, if he cannot throw pain-free, he would seek a second opinion from Dr. David Altchek, who is the New York Mets orthopedic surgeon. If surgery is the last resort, it would cost Escobar at least 10 months, he said. But, not having the supraspinata muscle in the back of his shoulder may force him into retirement.

"They're not sure if I'd be able to come back after surgery because not having that muscle is not going to help me," he said.

Gene Mauch stunned the Angels 20 years ago today

The March 26th announcement today that Escobar's season, and possibly career, is over has shocked Angels' fans. I knew for some reason the date "March 26th" was etched in my mind as part of Angels' lore and that's because it was exactly 20 years ago today, March 26th 1988, that manager Gene Mauch stunned the Angels by announcing his (rather unexpected) retirement. Is this year's jinxed Spring Training a sign that the Angels are once again "cursed"?

I recall that press conference

"Well, they say you can't win 'em all and I say 'Why not?' ..."
-- GENE MAUCH, 1988

That led to the disastrous Cookie Rojas managerial escapade. Cookie was fired in September for going to the mound twice tot alk to the same pitcher with no intention of taking him out. Cookie's brain fart led to Moose Stubing getting his long-awaited chance at the helm - but Moose's 0-8 record over the season's final week led to the hiring of Doug Rader.

Oh and Vlad has only once had someone on his team that drove in 100 runs. Point being, he has been on some weak offenses. Hunter, HK, and Kotch would like to change that.

I'm not surprised to learn that Escobar's "discomfort"

is a tear. I've been expecting to hear this since the first mention of the shoulder problem this winter.

How coincidental that this is the same shoulder that sidelined him last fall! He shut down during the winter, then experienced pain in January and they shut him down again. That was the first face slap.

What bugs me is that they performed an MRI several weeks ago but had NO mention of a tear. Now it is "Revealed" or "Disclosed" that he has a "tear in his pitching shoulder". The whole scenario has Bartolo Colon or Pedro Martinez written all over it.

The best thing for Escobar to do is to shut it down and have the surgery ASAP (like Martinez). That will at least give us, and him, some hope of his contributing later in 2009, the final year of his Angels contract.

I've searched both the MLB.com and the DiGiovanna articles. In neither place does it say if it's a torn muscle or a tear in the rotator cuff....It's just a tear in his pitching shoulder.

I don't feel the sense of doom that some have expressed here. Many of us may have forgotten that we've been burdened with six real, proven starting pitchers and with three alternatives in the wings, trying to fit them all into an eleven man pitching staff.

I think Magic Santana is going to quiet many vocal critics........He was destined to do this before the latest revelation of the "phantom tear."

Torn Labrum

At least according to Kelvim in this article at the OC Register. It says he's going to give it a few more weeks to see if it gets better with exercise and if not, then he's going to go see the same doctor that did Pedro Martinez' surgery. He also says it will take 10 months for recovery from the surgery if he decides to do it.

Escobar

I have Escobar as a 3.2 win pitcher. If his replacement in the rotation would be Joe Saunders, I have him as a 1.7 win pitcher. That's a loss of 1.5 wins and a little less rotation depth. Adenhart is also waiting in the wings just in case. Hopefully, Lackey's injury is not too severe, otherwise the Angels get knocked down even further.

This is sad news...

Kelvim is a great pitcher - or at least has/had great stuff over the last few years. With better offensive support he could have had a couple of 20 win seasons since joining the team.

The surgery is, by far, the best option - but he will still have a different career from this point forward. I wish him well, the Halos will survive - but his pitching career might not.
