Rays claim Haynes off Waivers
Rays claimed outfielder Nathan Haynes off waivers from the Angels. We hope this doesn't mean the Rays are done looking for a reserve outfielder. Haynes is an OK stopgap as a 25th man, if only because Carl Crawford's insistence on staying in left leaves the Rays without another option as a backup in center. However, he'd be a weak option if the team ever needed to play him more than twice a month. The 28-year-old hit .267/.313/.311 in 45 at-bats for the Angels in his major league debut last season. His arrival means Joel Guzman will head to Triple-A. - Rotoworld I guess Figgins lost his personal hitting coach |

Awwww...
Best of luck, Nathan! Hope he gets a starting job, since there was no room for him in our crowded outfield...

OK!......is the roster now set?
Depending upon whether GMJr opens the season on the DL, the roster may be set.
If GMJr is on the DL, the bench is Matholi, Morales, Izturis, Willits, & Quinlan..... (I'm assuming Juan Rivera replaces GMJr.)
If GMJr is not on the DL, the bench is Matholi, Rivera, Izturis, & Quinlan,..... with either Willits or Morales back in AAA.
Sad
Sad to see Haynes go... not that he had a chance of playing with us, but he was beginning to develop into a decent player, and it would have been nice if we could have gotten something in return for him.
When I saw this morning that Rays were looking to trade Edwin Jackson or another guy, I definitely was thinking it'd be worth Haynes to trade for Jackson.

Yeah, but
I very much doubt, even with the Angels' injury-depleted rotation, whether they would have had the patience to give significant playing time at the major league level to Jackson. That said, I bet he could have learned a lot pitching in the hitter-friendly PCL.
Witty .sig goes here.
Essentially
We dumped Jeff Weaver for nothing... But at least with Haynes gone, it should wipe out all memory (I know -- that's optimistic) of that awful cheat we once called "the elder"

nothing?
umm...evans? albeit because of a depleted system, hes one of our better players in AAA. Will he be a regular? probably not, but he has power potential, a plus arm and is young and athletic enough to be a reserve outfielder for us in the future(post-GA)

Haynes..
didn't come over for WTE.. it was Evans that we got in that trade..
Here's to another season of baseball! Angels in '08!
That's why we'll play Evans.
We paid WTE's salary for the whole year ($8MM) while he played for the Cardinals for half of that time. The way I see it, we have a $4MM investment in Evans.
He'll evenutally be on the 25-man roster, or we'll get something of value for him.
By the way, Evans is now the youngest outfielder on the 40-man roster......born 1/19/82.
Willits is next youngest , born 5/30/81. Haynes was born 9/7/79. Figgins, another possible future outfielder, was born 1/22/78.
This is sad to me
But definitely going to be rooting for the Rays this year, with him and Percy over there...
Wake me up on opening day.
Well head to head I'm obviously still a halo fan
Just saying that in the East, its easy to root for them to beat the Spankees and Red Sux.
Wake me up on opening day.
Don't be surprised to see both of them on the same team someday.
Tampa Bay is Figgy's back yard.
I didn't even know that Haynes was even released ...
This caught me by surprise.
Shopping for a new signature, but ran out of money...
I don't think he was released
He was out of options and had to pass through waivers to be assigned to the minors
Thanks for specifying...now back to my nap...

Bah humbug!
on Haynes...hate to see him go!
It is March 28th and snowing in Seattle...could this be a harbinger of things to come?

The 40-Man Roster
currently stands at only 38, with the loss of Haynes. The consensus seems to be that Darren O'Day will make the opening day roster; he would thus be the 39th player, meaning that the Halos can add yet another player. Some have mentioned Alex Serrano as a possible dark horse candidate for the last bullpen spot (along with Jason Bulger & Rich Thompson). Serrano is not on the 40-man, either; nor is Nick Adenhart, for that matter. So, perhaps the competition for that last spot just got a tad more interesting.
How does a near .400 AAA guy
get given up for nothing? I never understood how a .395 avg AAA hitter wasn't a top prospect. Can anyone explain that to me?

Because it took him until he was almost 28 to reach that level. In an eleven year minor league career, he's managed only a .287/.351/.389.
He is a role player
You don't get anything but roster-filler for a role player. We were stand-up guys and waived him so a team would take him and he would get playing time. It is called being a CLASSY organization. Word spreads, players make this their team of choice.
Nevertheless
Since he was picked up, it tends to suggest that there was some market. Maybe they could have gotten a rookie league pitcher or something for him. Clearly, though, they let him go now so he could catch on with someone else; they might have been able to pass him through waivers to SLC if they'd waited until Sunday, or whenever rosters are due.
if things don't work out in...
tampa for haynes maybe he can replace hatcher in 09.
