Glad to see some rooks in the pen
They sure looked nervous the last couple of days, but ultimately I like solving those spots from within when possible. These guys have good stuff, so it'll be good to get some competition for when Shields & Boot come back.

Willits
Why is he on the roster, what possible reason would we need a 6th outfielder? Pinch running I guess, but I'd rather trade him for an extra arm.

Just an observation
has anyone else noticed that Figgins hasn't taken a swing right handed since he hurt that hand again? Maybe that is why Willits is still up.... To lead off against lefties.

Where can you go
to find switch hitters stats split by left and right sides? I've looked before on the mlb site, but had no success.

Four reasons
1) As the preferred late-inning defensive replacement for aging/creaky Vlad & G.A.
2) As the best guy on the team for taking a walk, making a bunt, or pinch-running.
3) As a spot starter when we have one of our two extreme flyball pitchers (Weaver and Santana) on the mound.
4) As the only outfielder who is not either injury-prone or in his 30s or both -- and therefore capable of copious filling in for the injured guys.

Because we love Reggie!
And every other team despises and fears him. He is the itch on their backs they cannot scratch.

K-Rod Walking Away?
Seems a long-term deal is not gonna happen at this point. Not a huge revelation, but still.

lowball
If it's true that the Halos' best offer was really only $34 million for three years, then it seems to me that they really don't want to keep him. The fact of the matter is that he's worlds better than Francisco Cordero. If they're only willing to go three years, they're going to have to top $40 million, probably closer to $45 million. For four years, $50 million or more. The Angels aren't even close to that. They obviously know how much other relievers are getting, and they're on acid if they think K-Rod can't do better on the open market.

I'm betting on an A-Rod situation
After he kicks ass this year, the Angels will give him a sweet extension deal, and he'll take it. They just want to make sure he doesn't get hurt in the meantime. It'll take some heavy ass-kissing on their behalf, but I think Arte can get the job done.

Yes
I agree, Arte will pucker up, if K-Rod mans up.

That offer
Was made previous to any of the signings you mentioned and the Mariano Rivera deal, I believe.

His value
lies in his ability to go 2+ innings at any given time. Unlike Thompson & O'Day, who've never been asked to pitch more than an inning or so, Bootcheck was a starter until last year, and can be called upon in an emergency situation to give the team as many as four or five innings. Thus, it pretty much takes two pitchers to replace Bootcheck in terms of the innings he can pitch.

Maicer Izturis will start at shortstop and bat ninth in the Angels' opener Monday.
A mild surprise, given Aybar's strong spring offensively. Izturis is the better hitter of the two, but the Angels seemed to be rooting for Aybar to win the job from the start. Both players will get plenty of at-bats. Angels manager Mike Scioscia also announced that Mike Naopli will be the starting catcher over Jeff Mathis to begin the year.
