i played a round of golf today and the group behind us, a bunch of older ladies, brought out a dog in a carrier. so if you can imagine while you teeing off there is a dog barking in you back swing. It was awesome.

Whatever happens in the rest of this game, as of today, I’m officially a believer in Santana. No one in baseball was hotter than the Tigers coming into this game. They scored a bajillion runs against Texas during the sweep, and Ervin came into their house and put up a quality start.

Or maybe they get lit up. Fact is, Ervin was pitching well, and mike thought he could get another out or two out of him, maybe even a quick inning. And our bullpen needs a rest. It’s not just tomorrow Mike has to think about. What about Sunday, or Monday?

Shields is the only one that has to have today off, and the ONLY reason the bullpen is overworked is because of the way Scioscia uses it.
For example, say Speier is lights out in the 7th and throws 8 pitches. Even though he only threw 8 pitches he’ll be removed in the 8th for Shields. If a pitcher is pitching well then he should be left in the game, but Scioscia is way way way too entrenched in the Speier 7th, Shields 8th, Frankie 9th.

He tries to conserve their arms for the long hall. And given his record of success, I’m gonna trust him over you every time.

That’s not conserving their arms. It is much smarter to have a reliever throw 20-25 pitches and make less appearances than having him get warmed up, throw 8 pitches and make more appearances. Scioscia gets WAY too much credit for the Angels success. Like tonight they are praising him for leaving Kotchman in against lefties, I think 9/10 of this board has said to let Kotch hit everyday for like the past 3 years. But he finally does it and gets credit for it? BS.
First off
No one said anything about letting Casey get more ABs against ANYBODY in 2006. If you were watching him then, you’d know why. Last year some people demanded it, and some people thought Mike had the right idea, but it wasn’t until late that people started really bringing up Casey’s .300 average.
Second, it’s not better to let pitchers throw 25 pitches than it is to throw 9. Our guys tend to start breaking down after more than one inning, however many pitches it was. In case you missed it, Mike DID leave Shields in yesterday, because he was cruising. And it backfired. That happens sometimes as a manager. Like tonight, leaving in Santana could have been a good move. It’s not a huge risk to his arm as long as you don’t do it night after night.
Mike gets credit because he’s had more success in the last 8 years than in the Angels previous 41 years COMBINED. That’s not an accident. He occasionally makes moves I disagree with, but there’s always a solid reason he makes them. Pretending otherwise is just deluding yourself.
