Nationally Televised GAME THREAD
Los Angeles Angels at Detroit Tigers, Apr 27, 2008 5:05 PM PDT
They want us all on our best behavior for the national audience and Ramon Ortiz is still off the team so that helps...

Pub's shut, it's 1.15 am...

I see red people
I hate Joe Morgan.
“And then the California Angels, or should I say the Los Angeles Angels.”
It’s NOT FUNNY.
Willits for ROY! Oh, wait... Um, Kendrick for batting title? Yeah!
Hmm
looked a little inside…but he should have squared up that first strike and driven it.

Nah that one was legit.
Nasty pitch too. But yeah, the first strike was crushable.

who Joe and Jon are rooting for.

Those fickin' future Fremonts managed to get the M's to beat themselves again today.
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
Yeah. I was very disappointed in the M's today.
It’s one of the dangers of leaving your starter in too long though.

This is a tight strike zone

okay let me get this straight
the TAMPA BAY Rays don’t play in Tampa Bay (which is not a city at all), nor in the city of Tampa, but in Saint Petersburg but nobody gargles their team name, uh, okay…
Unfair
the Tampa Bay Rays have been named for Tampa Bay from day one…that was their team name the first time they ever played. Tampa Bay.
It’s not like the Angels were ever “Los Angeles” at any point in their team history. Not once ever. Not even for a day. Especially not on the first day they were a franchise. Especially not then.

Also, no one cares too much about the Rays.
I say that as someone who appreciates the IMMENSE amount of talent they have. I made a point to buy tickets for their series in Anaheim.
The fact is that the national media pays less attention to them than they do even to us.

~Till the Halo burns out...
on gameday
it clearly shows pitches very much in the strike zone being called balls
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
Pitches two and four were in the exact same location
and were given different calls.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 27, 2008 5:38 PM PDT reply actions
Yeah, inconsistent is the right word
should have used it before. But I think its inconsistent with a tight-leaning. Strikes are going back and forth between being called a ball or a strike, but no balls are being called strikes at some point.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 27, 2008 5:41 PM PDT up reply actions
I would agree.
But it wasn’t very tight on the first strike to Izturis. That ball is an inch or two off the plate on gameday. And to be fair to Granderson, the called strike three wasn’t really inside a tight zone either.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Weaver is a command pitcher
When he gets squeezed, its not gonna be pretty…
Willits for ROY! Oh, wait... Um, Kendrick for batting title? Yeah!
No, but I'll keep in mind that the Angels are bending to my will today.

But the team won’t pick up his option (?). (I think the Angels have one for 2009.)

True enough.
Though if K-Rod does end up walking, we might excercise some sentimentality and sign Percy back up.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Me too.
I really want to watch him break the saves record for us some day, and become the first Angels prospect to become a HOFer.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I don't know if Garret still has a realistic chance.
I hope he makes it, but I can’t say with confidence he’s a no-doubter. K-Rod will be though.
~Till the Halo burns out...
The difference between Jeter and Garret
for their careers, anyway (aside from ‘intangibles’ and ‘captain’ bullshit) is, statistically, a couple hundred walks.
I wouldn’t vote for one and not the other on the grounds that one walked a lot more. Especially with Garret having a slight edge in power and a great edge in fielding.

I love the Angels getting as much recognition as possible
but Joe Morgan is sorta full of shit if he thinks that Scioscia doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. If there is one guy affiliated with the team that does get a ton of credit, it’s always him. He’s got one manager of the year award, and consideration for it every other season…everyone credits him with the team being as good as it is.

id have paid more for tickets to have him on the team. but it is what it is, and he’s just one guy.

id like him out there for at least one batter with a very short leash.

Probably a short leash. His PC is at 96, so a quick inning could be doable.

I'd really like to see if we could get Granderson eventually
yeah yeah i know, we’ve got a million outfielders, but this guy is one hell of a baseball player.
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
Don't forget Brad Coon, Peter Borjos, Chris Petit and Terry Evans
in the minors.
~Till the Halo burns out...
assuming Junior isnt as bad as his average says
and assuming hunter doesnt decline to horribly
ans assuming Vlad finally DH’s
we could have 3 awesome defensive center fielders for one of the better outfields in baseball
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
by Carl Johnson on Apr 27, 2008 7:16 PM PDT up reply actions
We'll see if we can squeeze him in.
Given the depth on SLC and our Minor League Pitching though, we’re pretty well set for a while.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I don't think our Minor League pitching is all that
Adenhart is probably a #2-#4, Walden could be a #1- bust, Nick Green could be a good inning eater. After that who all do you like?
Shane Loux
...just kidding, the last thing I want is to be a site that pretends to be armchair minor league experts….
Tobin Mason, Brok Butcher,
Tommy Mendoza and Sean O’Sullivan (despite his slow start).
~Till the Halo burns out...
Don't doubt Mason
And Mendoza would look better if he hadn’t been hurt last year. Butcher is a bit of a long shot though, kinda like Green.
~Till the Halo burns out...

Agreed
Prediction: Speier allows both Weaver’s inherited runners to score but makes the last two outs of the frame.
Witty .sig goes here.
Verlander allowed 11 base runners in 5 2/3 innings pitched
how is that ‘too good’ to allow 6 runs?
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 27, 2008 7:30 PM PDT reply actions
Weave gave up 8 in 6.1
Not much better. The big difference was in extra base hits.
Witty .sig goes here.
That's 2 runners an inning, vs. 1.3
that’s a pretty significant difference.
But aside from that, Weaver has two runs to show for it, vs. Verlander’s 6. Sounds about right.
And regardless, a WHIP of two should lead to about 6 runs in 5 2/3 innings.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 27, 2008 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions
when did speier forget what the strike zone looks like?
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
great
so speier comes in and turns weavers line from 6.1 IP 0ER to 6.1 IP to 2ER
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
The runs are charged to Weaver with good reason
Speier blew it, but the runs go to Weaver because he put the team in a position to allow those runners to score…and he likely would have allowed them to had he stayed out, because he was off his game this inning.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on Apr 27, 2008 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions
Lucky it was only 2
Weave was flirting with disaster early and often, so 2 ER is a small price to pay…
