Frankie out till at least the weekend
Closer Francisco Rodriguez
said last week he has had persistent pain in his left ankle since
spraining it last August on a follow-through. Rodriguez has continued
to aggravate it on his follow-through ever since. Then, Rodriguez
injured his right ankle Saturday before he ever took the mound.
Rodriguez said he was coming off the field at the end of batting
practice and slipped on the dugout steps. The ankle was clearly a
problem Monday night. He blew his first save of the season and faced
just four batters, giving up two doubles and walking two before he was
removed. "It's just real painful," Rodriguez said of the sprain to his
right ankle. "I couldn't get (any) balance on my back leg at all. I was
doing it all with my arm. My fastball was cutting this much (hands a
foot apart) at the end because I had no power in my legs. As soon as I
lift my leg, all my pressure is on my ankle and I couldn't push."
(Updated 04/08/2008).
I have also read that he will get looked at sometime today. Hopefully, the news is good for the club as I have a feeling that it could be a serious injury.

Did you see Shields last night?
I think after a couple of weeks, if K-Rod is still out and Shields improves, maybe go to Scot. But right now, the "hotter" reliever is Speier.

Yeah I saw Shields last night.
I also saw Speier give up a 2 out dinger to KUBEL in the 8th inning of a 5-3 game last week and before that I saw Speier's 27.00 ERA in October of 2007.
If Shields is healthy (and I don't know that he is) he's unhittable. Speier doesn't bring that to the mound.
Neither one of these guys is a long term solution but until we either A) get the real Frankie back or B) find the next real Halos closer I'd rather have Shields throwing gas in the 9th.
We'll be fine.

1.2 IP in Oct 2007 = small sample
I know what you are getting at though. Kubel hit a one-run dinger, BTW.
Heck, Jarrod Washburn has a shittier relief appearance in less time (see 2004 playoffs and think green monster and david ortiz).
Shields is too raw (not enough time to prepare for the level he needs to be at) at this point, but I think you will see I am right in that Scioscia will not go to Shields just yet. I'll eat crow if I am wrong.
