Athletics @ Angels THURSDAY GAME THREAD
Oakland Athletics at Los Angeles Angels, May 1, 2008 7:05 PM PDT
You know what I like about the Oakland Athletics? They are more likely moving to Portland than to Fremont. Here is a look at their fanbase driving home from the game.
Oh yeah, bet on Portland.
I'm gnawing on the knowledge that I have been burned

Usually they’re attempting to shout at the top of their lungs; now it’s as if they’re doing the thorazine shuffle in the booth. WTF?

Since Ortiz lied about his age
and Ryan routinely had 13+ K/9’s in the minors, I’m not going out on a limb to say, neither.
Off the top of my head, I’m guessing he becomes a sort of Matt Morris type - a right-handed Jarrod Washburn, if you will - a righty-with-guile type who doesn’t miss enough bats to be a great pitcher but will have a good major league career.
Witty .sig goes here.
With a fastball already at 93-94?
There’s no reason he couldn’t miss more bats once his control improves. He has good movement and good offspeed.

He is on the team because Scioscia wants him on the team.
Until you all are in charge of the lineups, quit bitchin’ about Q. That’s all we hear every time the guy plays and it is GETTING OLD, VERY OLD OK?

12 pitch first inning

RICH LEDERER
When they show the isolated shot of a Right Handed Batter in the box, BASEBALL ANALYST writer Rich Lederer is clearly visible sitting in the front row above the Angel dugout perched on the batter’s front shoulder.
Typical Duchscherer inning
against us. The question is whether he can keep it up. Man I hate junkballers though. I don’t understand why this team can’t seem to hit them.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Four-pitch walk = bad, kid.
Also, Napoli, WTF @ calling four pitches on a corner that the ump is clearly not calling?
~Till the Halo burns out...
on Gamecast
ball 4 was exact location as strike 1. wtf. what’s it look like on teevee?

Napoli needs to set up in the middle of the plate
and leave the target there. This kid isn’t Saunders or Santana.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Not good
Over on AN, they were saying that the best strategy against Adenhart would be to simply take pitches. Looks like they’re right.
Yikes.
Looks like question #1 is going to be a wash today.

Dude cannot throw a strike to save his behind
Once the guy got a hit and he had to pitch from the stretch it was all downhill … 39 pitches and counting … 40
Well, we can take this one of two ways
A) Adenhart really blows this much.
B) Adenhart is suffering from nerves, and the fact that he’s pitching on three days rest.
~Till the Halo burns out...
More Likely B
and seriously, giving the guy his first MLB start on 3 days’ rest seemed, ahead of time, to be a completely stupid idea.
I agree
Apparently Q’s range is now 3 feet. That was pathetically bad
seriously
just going by gameday here, so I don’t know what the pitches look like, but yeah. Curve is the only thing thrown for a strike.
funny
aren’t you arguing the EXACT opposite in yesterday’s win thread against me ;)
I guess if it's not hit right at him

I know none of the runs will be earned, but
this is by far the best the Angels have EVER done agaisnt Duscher (sp)
He usually only goes 1 inning against us.
We don’t have time to adjust to his ultra-slow 86 MPH “fast”ball.

Aw. No joy for Vlad.
I’ll definitely take the runs, though. :)
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
curiosity
anyone know what the record is for unearned runs in an inning? It’s surely more than 5, but now I’m just kinda curious.
Let’s hope Adenhart can put the last inning behind him and, with a new lease on life, make amends.
I LOVE beating the Jack Custs of the world
That s* is barely baseball, and doesn’t even work in the regular season anymore.
Can of corn to LF by GA
Routine as they get…Cust put his glove up in front of his face and blocked his view o the ball. Ball hit the middle of his glove and landed directly behind him. Should have seen the look on Cust’s face…it was priceless! Slo mo showed him taking his eyes off the ball before it landed in his glove! Too funny!

I wonder if some of this is just a lack of catcher-pitcher sync
Adenhart is throwing some good inside pitches, but the ump isn’t calling that corner.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I love Naps offense, but it's hard to argue with results,
And Mathis just caught 18 innings of 1 run ball.

That's it
His peripherals were pretty lame in Salt Lake. He should stay there until September callups.

Or maybe next time he can get a real shot
instead of being put in his first major league game on three days rest.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I agree that's part of it
But he needs to be better than a 5-6 K/9 at Salt Lake facing AAA hitters.

Santana pitched a complete game in his second start.
Although there are those that argue that 1 inning is a good sample
well this was kind of disappointing
poor kid… too much pressure?
i still think they’ll give him at least 1 more start before they boot him.
hopefully the next one will be better
Bring up Wood!!!
Three innings of Moseley
and two innings of batting practice was the alternative.

~Till the Halo burns out...
Oh sure.
Now you start calling the high strikes. Thanks for nothing ump.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Why? It's not his fault the A's are getting spetacularly lucky hits
like Barton’s on top of a magic strike zone.

so let me get this straight
we bring up adenhart with no rest because we dont want moseley to pitch and he ends up pithing in the 3rd inning anyway and still finds a way to lose the game
I'd rather see Willitz in LF
Since Nick sucked a couple innings, Dustin feels like he has the right to suck a few.
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
It would be nice if he got the same strike zone Duchscherer is getting,
though.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
He's right though.
Duchsch has been getting off the corner calls all night while Moseley and Adenhart have gotten them sporadically, if at all.

*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Darren, we need you to man up here.
Tall order, but still.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
man our OF is just plain bad
has Vlad EVER thrown to the right base?
lol
I’ve actually commented many times how deep the team is, but Hunter and GMJ can play the OF very well, GA and Vlad not so much. Just because the team overall is great doesn’t mean it can’t have a glaring weakness or two

oakland determined to win this game
it would be awesome if we came back
I'd rather see Willitz in LF
Wow this game is awesome. how the hell are we getting blown out by a crappy
hitting team twice in a series
They take tons of pitches and shatter the nerve of our young pitchers is all I can think of.
Because Saunders and Santana wiped the floor with them.
~Till the Halo burns out...
The one other factor:
Mathis was catching. I don’t like it, but there it is.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
It's so frustrating that we cannot get out of this inning.

How can Scioscia
let his starters and relievers give up so many runs when it is obvious they don’t have anything. It shouldn’t take 5 or 6 straight batters reaching base for a manager to get him out of the game. But that’s what it seeming took for Moseley and ODay.
He's giving them the opportunity to pitch out of it, and at some point, you need somebody
to stay out there.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Yeah you're right.
Let’s just blow our whole bullpen out tonight and then concede. The moment they walk someone or give up a hit, they get taken out.
~Till the Halo burns out...
f it
leave bootcheck in for the rest of the game. no use wearing out the bullpen
I'd rather see Willitz in LF
That's my thought. Unless we by some miracle come back.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
I agree but only because he brought up Adenhart instead of Green
Green pitched dynamite tonight.
I will say this in MIke’s defense. He is not thinking about tonight. He is thinking long term. Adenhart comes up tonight, pitches on 3 days rest, but then on 4 the next 2-3 starts til Lackey gets back. This is not about one game (ie tonight). This is about seeing Adenhart for 3-4 starts and seeing what he has. They had to put Escobar on the 60 day to bring up Adenhart, Green would have been a freebie.
There's an old saying: 50 percent of what's going to happen, you have no control over. And the other 50 percent is going to happen anyway." -- Arte Moreno
The Angels are going to have to eventually trade for one more quality established reliever this summer
once teams drop out of contention.
I have absolutely no confidence in the bottom half of the rotating blowpen.
I disagree
I believe the SLC shuttle will continue and they will eventually givce Arredondo or Serrano a chance and one of them will prove themselves! O’Day almost did the job tonight…got two tough outs and then couldn’t get anyone out! If this does not work, then they will trade….
