Question for the locals

Greetings baseball fans -

Despite the Braves hat I'm wearing in my user pic, I do not post here to troll, instigate, and/or pick fights.  As a baseball fan, I come to seek ideas, and pick the brains of the locals.

On my ongoing quest to tackle every Major League Ballpark in America, I am making the trip out to Anaheim later this month (During the series against the Tigers) to see Angel Stadium.  I can google LA and Anaheim, look around on craigslist, and seek out generic things to do from the internet, but I think that I can get some better ideas of things to do from like-minded baseball/sports aficionados.

So that being said, what's there to do in Anaheim?  Novelty/giant foods, cool places to see, best areas to see the Pacific, etc?  And I have no interest in theme parks, I'm only going to be around for two days.

Any and all constructive suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I can't wait to see your beautiful park, and I look forward to seeing the phenomenon known as Vlad Guerrero swinging at anything and everything.

Disneyland

is generally high on most people’s list of things to do, but if you’ve been to Disney World in Florida, you’ll be all jaded ‘n stuff.

Witty .sig goes here.

Yeah...

I guess I am jaded about Disney. I like it with a group, but no point in going solo. I’ve heard Land is better than World though.

Going to the beach?

Surf City—Huntington Beach, hands down.

If you’ve got the time, there’s Medieval Times down in Buena Park. Not a theme park, but a medieval themed dinner theatre, with jousting and stuff.

I have to agree

They opened one up in Atlanta, and my local friends keep dragging me to it whenever they have out of town guests. It’s alright, but while on travel, I like to do/try things I can’t do at home.

good Christ

The guy is coming all the way from Atlanta for two days in Orange County and you suggest he wastes one of his nights at Medieval Times? He could do that in any fly-over state in the Midwest. Why don’t you just tell him to check out the Ikea while he’s here?

Roy, if you want to have some fun in Orange County for a couple nights and meet some cool interesting people without spending a ton of cash just hit up Main Street in downtown Huntington or Newport Pier area in Newport Beach. Lots of great bars and restaurants and no ghetto people. It usually turns party-ish around 9pm and the crowd is usually in the mid 20’s to early 30’s range.
If you want to stay closer to the Big A then try downtown Fullerton. Lots of fun bars there with live bands and they even have some decent jazz clubs (if that’s your thing). You can take the Metro Link train there and the crowd is a little more college student oriented, in my opinion.

they seriously don’t let people who, on a scale of 1-10, score lower than a 9.2. Be prepared to show how hot you are at the cities border just to gain access.

I'm 5'4", 480 lbs with a cleft lip and a unibrow thicker than Scorsese's.

And I’ve managed to reside in HB for 5 years.

I think you’ve got HB confused with every other coastal city in Orange County. Huntington is probably the most laid back, non-uppity of them all. In fact, I’m having a hard time understanding how you could have even come up with something so absurd.

But back on topic, my advice is to you Mr. Hobbs is to spend most of your time on the coast. There’s not much going on inland, and especially not in Anaheim (other than Disneyland and gang activity). San Juan Capistrano has some historical value if you’re into that. Bottom line is you can’t go wrong by taking your time cruising up the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) and stopping to take in the sights and sounds of the cool beach towns like Laguna Beach (beyond rich, snobby, artists’ community with fine women and killer vistas), Corona Del Mar (one of my favorite spots on the coast is Inspiration Point in Corona Del Mar. Google map it) and Huntington Beach (“Surf City”. Where surfing on the US mainland was born and home to one of the longest piers on the west coast, the US Open of Surfing, The Vandals, and Jason Lee.

Newport Beach, 25 miles down the 55 Fwy

Catch an Angel getting lit at the Goat Hill Tavern, a washed-up actor (Jan-Michael Vincent) next door at The Helm. Crawl the pubs at the Newport Peninsula - the Beach Ball, Sharkey’s, Blackie’s, Mutt Lynch’s, et. al. Or, take a day/night trip 100 miles down the 5 Fwy to the south in picturesque Tijuana, where for a little more than 60 bucks you can have a little Gov. Elliot Spitzer action with a muy bonita chica in the Zona Norte section of TJ (ask the cabbie to take you to Adelita’s - just tell ‘em Tommy Lasorda sent you!).

The Beach

Don’t bother trying to see anything around Anaheim – outside of the stadium & Disneyland there’s not much draw- for a tourist trying to see OC, that is.

I’d recommend taking the whole day and just driving PCH. Take the 22 (right by the stadium) over to the 405, exit at one of the many Huntington Beach exits, head towards the coast, and then head south on PCH towards Mexico. There are MANY beautiful places to stop and sightsee and tons of great roadside restaurants (from the $$$$ Las Brisas in Laguna to the $ hamburger shack in Newport to the practical shanty with to-die-for shakes at Shake Shack in Crystal Cove. Lots of great beaches, snooty art galleries, shopping, and people-watching along the way, too. Once you’ve driven far enough (or you start seeing the signs for San Diego), turn around and head back. A perfect day!

I'm not superstitious, but I'm a little stitious.

Wow

You guys are a lot more helpful than the Dodgers fans (I’m going to see Dodger Stadium the day prior), and I really appreciate the help with all of this.

Good laughs at where to find trashed Angels and celebs, ready to have “flu-like-symptoms” the next day. I think what I’ll do based on your guys’ suggestions is hit up the PCH and go down it until it it ends, and keep going down I-5 to San Diego, since I’ll be hitting up Petco Park the day after the Angels/Tigers game.

I’m a night drinker – so what’s the best thing to do to pass the time during the day before hitting up the game at night? I’m leaning towards Laser Tag in Fullerton, but wondering if anyone’s got any other suggestions?

In-N-Out, I go to often while in Vegas…
You folks still have El Pollo Locos?
JBX’s have moved onto the east coast… and Atlanta has a Fatburger now…
Any other joints I should keep my eyes open for?

Much appreciated, guys, really.

True Blue L.A. gave me very little advice at all, but based on their user interaction, it doesn’t look like they have a sizeable enough readership to actually give any advice. Considering I’m staying in Anaheim for two nights, the L.A. part of the trip is kind of the shortest.

Thanks for the tip, though.

Theres Molcasalsa..

For post-game drunken munchies. Around Petco Park, the Gaslamp District is pretty nice. I was down there on a Thursday night so it was pretty quiet but the bartender said weekends are busy.

Im not 100% of where these are, but there are many aquariums and such along the coast.

It's a walk up based on a local sit down "50's Diner" franchise

Their shakes are the bomb. In my opinion, if you’re gonna do Ruby’s, hit the one on the end of the Huntington Beach Pier. Full classic diner menu (and some) and sparkling panoramic ocean views.

Everyone with a game ticket used to get free Hooters wings if the Angels scored 10 runs. Them were the days…

Seal Beach is a little better

I usually do one or the other on Saturday for breakfast, and the HB one, because it has bigger floor space (a second floor), tends to worse service, plus they’re annoying pricks about not seating you unless every last one of your party has arrived. There used to be a phallus of a manager at Seal, but I griped to corporate and they eventually got rid of him, though not without some uppity middle manager telling me why I was wrong to complain first. What a bunch of Richards!

No, really, Ruby’s is almost always excellent. I’ve been going there for 15+ years regularly, and so it’s the pissy stupid incidents that really stick in my head.
