What to do with Juan Rivera
<!--StartFragment-->
Now that we are a quarter of the way through the season I think that it is time to start addressing some of the concerns over the angels roster. i.e. what to do with Q, Juan Rivera and Willtz. I am a big fan of Willitz and think that he should be playing everyday. I think that most people on this site are tired of Q and think that k-mo would be a better backup at first. But what I am curious about is what everyone thinks we should do with Johnny Rivers. With potentially six everyday outfielders we definitely have an overcrowded outfield. Although I provide no stats to back up my argument I feel that Juan is at least our worst to second worst outfielder and at the best 4th or 5th best hitter. It is unlikely that Juan will get the necessary at bats he needs to get going, unless at lest 2 other OF go down. He is a free agent at the end of the year and not part of the Angles future plans. So the question becomes what to do with him. I myself am leaning towards trading him in the near feature to acquire maybe a young A or AA arm. the problem is that without AB's his trade value is low and we might be better just keeping him as insurance rather than trading him and getting nothing in return. What do you all think?

How soon they forget...
2006, a season that finished about 18 months ago with Rivera the second best hitter on the team. This guy diserves respect, he paid his dues, he worked his way up the ladder. Then he had a freak injury playing winter ball, trying to improve his game even more. All he needs is some consistent ABs to get back in groove, he’s a streak hitter, like many power guys are, and it’s understandably hard for him to get it going riding the pine.
I think that Rivera is our future RFer, when Vlad is mercifully retired from the field and made the full-time DH. This could happen as early as next year. Rivera’s probably our best fielding corner outfielder and without a doubt he has the best throwing arm on the team. Unfortunately, GMJ has taken his ABs away, apparently simply because of his bloated contract.
I’m rooting for Rivera to overcome all of his bad luck and disappointing circumstances and once again become the dominant player he showed he could be two years ago. Please notice that you haven’t heard one word of complaint from Rivera throughout this season, even though he performed well in the spring and during his comeback at the end of last season. He’s a great player with a great attitude and he’s trying his best to help the team in any way he can. I feel certain that he’ll make an impact before this year is over.

Here, here 100wins...
I couldn’t have said it any better myself. It is a shame that he isn’t getting more AB’s – GMJ is fucking putrid and hits leadoff? Who does Rivera have to fellate to get some fucking AB’s.
I didn’t drop the F-bomb in April – so there’s two months worth, Rev!

I disagree with paragraph 2 only
I don’t think Rivera is our second best defensive OF. I think the leg injury really shortened his range. Don’t look now but Vlad appears to have put some emphasis on playing D again this season. (Wish he was working on his hitting instead!)
That said I respect him for everything else you wrote and I would hate to see him go. He needs to play somewhere on a consistent basis…that might be with someone else. I would like to see him getting HGH’s AB’s. But then again, I would like to see Reggie getting HGH’s AB’s too… :)

Not Gonna Happen
I would like to see him getting HGH’s AB’s. But then again, I would like to see Reggie getting HGH’s AB’s too…
In this morning’s paper, Scioscia stands by HGH, saying in essence that HGH is better than Willits or Rivera. Reality says otherwise.

Until GMJr is traded away, that will always be the company line.
Any salesman knows that. Scioscia’s hands are tied until after the ‘09 season. Meanwhile, we all wait, and play the cards we’re dealt.

Don't they keep Q around as the third catcher?
Though they could always call up Budde.

he won't stay
if we can get something for him, do it
although i think he’s useful to us here, now
if GA or vlad get hurt he’ll be the replacement
if GMJ gets hurt reggie is the replacement
if torii gets hurt reggie and jaun will split time
on second thought, don’t trade him
Who goofed? I've got to know.

Rivera need playing time
Especially with the year off. Won’t get it with the Angels unless their is an injury.

The 2006 Season
I don’t think you can draw a trend from just one season but his numbers in 2006 were great.
2006: 27 2Bs, 23 HRs, 85 RBIs, and 310 AVG in 448 at bats. Vlad had 607 at bats that year and when you adjust Juan’s numbers for that many at bats you get (Rivera-Vlad): 36.5-34 2Bs, 31-33 HRs, 115-116 RBIs.
Adjusting 2005 for 600 ABs: 29 2Bs, 26 HRs, and 102 RBIs. Thats not bad either. Granted with the broken leg he suffered he may never get back to where he was.

Juan really screwed himself, to be honest
If he hadn’t broken his leg, we wouldn’t be talking about this. We wouldn’t have Gary Matthews Junior, probably wouldn’t have Torii Hunter, and he’d be a starting outfielder.
Moral of the story: Don’t break your leg playing winter ball.

we signed GMJ before JR broek his leg
We signed Shea Hillenbrand when Rivera snapped the twig.

what is
everyones hard on for Rivera? you guys fawn over him like the media does with Obama. One good year doesnt make him a great player. If GMJ wasn’t on the team then I would agree with you that he should get a little bit more playing time to see what he can do. But, that’s not the case.
I would rather see Willits/Ga splitting time out there. Willits is a guy who gets on base, works counts, and makes a pitcher throw pitches. We don’t have many players who do that , and we need it. On the other hand Rivera, swings at the first pitch trys to pull it and always is thinking over the fence, we have enough players that do that so lets mix it up
Relax... Everything is fine

I have a friend,
and if he gets some consistent at bats, I think he’ll be good. I don’t like this argument.

Outfielders who are capable of 25+ HRs,
high BA, low SO, hit both RHP and LHP, good defense, powerful accurate throwing arms, cheap, and still in their primes…...........don’t grow on trees.

Having 6 outfielders is actually a good thing...
As this year has shown, the Angels’ depth has kept them winning. Figgins, Kendrick, Isturis go on the DL and the team doesn’t go into a tailspin, it just keeps going. It could just as easily end up GA or GMJ who ends up on the DL for a stint, so Willits and Rivera are important if outfielders start getting hurt.. Rivera just has to be patient, his opportunity will come…he needs to be ready for it. Sure, he MIGHT have some value out there for a trade, but why make a move if we don’t have to. I say he keeps his head up, keeps working and things will work themselves out for him and the Angels.
I hope Vlad hits it into the rocks...

trade him to.....
san diego. their outfield is an atrocity and surely could use rivera and/or willits. throw in aybar or izturis and we may be able to get khalil greene. just thought i would revive the rumors of the offseason :)
