Bring up Wood!!!
Almost There
I’d prefer Rivera over GA for a couple more games, at least, to see what Big Juan could do with a few more consistent ABs.

Aybar is magic on defense. Freakin’ magic. All he needs is one of those tall purple hats.
Last year, I proclaimed him raw in the infield. Bad footwork. Strong armed, but without confidence. I surrender. The kid can play.

look, heres the thing jered
you spent all spring training talking about how you wanted to get deeper into games. prove it. throw strikes on 0-2 counts and make them hit it or sit down. don’t walk anybody when you have them down 0-2. ever. in fact, don’t go 2-0 on anyone. you’re throwing way too many pitches in the first 4 innings to throw more than 6.
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
ooooh nabokov gotta close that five hole quicker

Yeah. Well.
This IS the guy who thinks that prospects who have a hot season in the minors are only good for trade bait, not putting in as the linchpin of the franchise future. We could have had Miggy if we had tossed in one more of these “prospects” who are flailing this year.
So, yes, I am sour about it all…
That's Detroit's problem.
He’d be our 3B, instead of Q (see last night’s rostor)
Actually, at the moment we need a DH. Frickin’ bad.
No.
We need a RF. And Miguel Cabrera got moved because he is AT LEAST as bad at 3B as Q. Possibly worse.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I would take RF at the minimum, but...
We have lots of OF’s. Our DH position is worhtless so far this year. We need THAT hole filled.
And Miggy was almost identical to Figgins as 3B in 2007.
The thing about Figgins only proves my point.
And if we have so many outfielders, how come Vlad is still playing RF?
~Till the Halo burns out...
I agree that Figgy is a butcher at 3B.
So we could have Miggy’s bat in our lineup WITHOUT ANY depreciation in defense.
Vlad is still in RF because of some crap about needing to be in the flow of the game in order to be productive at the plate. To which I reply: dude, you are getting paid. Money. MY money. Suck it up and deal.
For all we know, Miggy has the same problem.
And Figgy WAS a butcher. He’s been much better this year than last year.
~Till the Halo burns out...
MCab is no longer capable of playing 3B
He might make the cover of Fat Boy Magazine, though.

True dat.
I’m 6’4”, but I was lanky with very quick fast-twitch muscles as a youngster. Therefore, I played 3B up until I was 20, when I found out that girls were more fun.
I honestly cannot ever recall committing an error. Ever.
Then again, I was not blessed with Glaus’ power. More like Brooks Robinson.
Thanks.
Those mad skills, AND burst blood vessicles in my left eye, where I took a line shot when I was 12 (the eyar before the bases move back to 90 feet). If I am tired, or stoned, or drunk, others can tell because the outer half of my left eye goes blood red. I don’t see it, of course, but it creeps people out.
Ow.
I guess my most impressive achievement baseball wise is that I never got injured, despite taking my fair share of hard knocks and HBPs.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I got an assist on the play.
The pitcher caught the ball on the rebound. So I was told when they picked me up off the ground.
I bet.
That shit is dangerous. That where the First base coach who died in the minors last year got hit.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I've thought about that game a lot, of course.
Mostly about how all the parents on both sidelines must have absolutely wretched at the sight of a child going down like a sack of potatoes after taking a line shot to the head, and needing two men who were doctors to rush across the Little League park to get me back on my feet. I was told that all 4 games in progress were halted for the entire 20 minutes I was out, because the other parents had ran onto the other fields shouting for doctors.

Even if I needed to go into the office, it is less than 10 minutes away. Nice.
Better. Now you have to take shots at the stupid Coors commercial
where the Coors drinkers need to have their label turn blue to let them know when their beer is cold enough to drink.
they need something to tell them to drink
it’s not like the beer has any flavor that they would know the difference from carbonated water
I know
they need it to be cold to tell the difference between the can of “beer” and the can they peed in!
Figgy down to .305

So when that Round Table Pizza comercial just came on, it inspires me to inform all of you Halo fans that the finest pizza whint 20 minutes of the park is Zito’s (as in Barry, but no relation). Take Katella East to Tustin Ave., turn norht (that would be left) and head up to Meats Ave. Turn into the shopping center on the southwest corner of that intersection, and Zito’s is tuckes back in the corner.

Yeah.
Tying run on 3rd. Winning run on 2nd. 1 out. Pitcher against the ropes. The infield is in. Your team has scratching and clawing it’s way back into the game. So what do you do? Swing a the very first pitch you see, which happens to be a wicked, tailing curveball.
Dear Rivera apologists on HH, here is ladybug’s quota for May: “Fuck you.”
Blame Sicoscia for NEVER playing him then expecting him to win it for us in his first at bat of the season?
Oh wait never mind he has a couple at bats but not enough to be put in, in such a crusial situation.
Reggie sucked too….....he should of at least hit it on the floor and tried to run it out.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck Juan Rivera
There, that’s my f-word quota for the month.
Look, I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play.
Wow.. even Fangraphs agrees
I’m surprised, but for 1 at bat, his win percentage is -.302… way above everyone else

Mike Scioscia made Dave Trembley look good
And that is hard to do.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver
The tying run on second, no outs
and you BUNT? Christ.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 2, 2008 10:05 PM PDT reply actions
Well, it could have been worse.
We could have pissed away the most critical at-bat that inning by first pitch hacking. With the TYING AND WINNING runs in scoring position.
Oh. Wait.
Of course you bunt.
It’s a sacrifice. You get a runner on third with 1 out as a result and all you’d need is a sac fly to tie the game. And first base become empty so there’s no double play possibility with 1 out after the sacrifice. The sacrifice was a strong call.
That Rivera couldnt hit a sac fly or even groundout to let GA score was the weak play.
I've brought this up before
but the number say, STATISTICALLY, that your chances of scoring a run with a runner on third and one our are less than your chances with a runner on second and no outs. Exchanging one base for one out, in general, does not statistically improve your chances of winning the game.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 3, 2008 10:19 AM PDT up reply actions
STATISTICALLY. Bleh.
Put down your Bill James pipe.
Do not confuse the obvious tactical advantage gained, with the fact that over history past hitters have hosed too many of their at-bats in that situation.
The proper sacrifice gives your team an opportunity to succeed. What the offense and the defense do with that opportunity is another set of issues.
Past instances are generally speaking
a good indicator of future success.
The fact that I have brought this same statistic up about a thousand times on this board now is probably a pretty good indicator in itself that the Angels themselves have been failing too often to bring the hitters home following a sacrifice, otherwise I’d have no reason to be bringing it up.
Your rhetoric about ‘a proper sacrifice gives your team…’ is all well and good, and generally believed baseball ‘knowledge. Nonetheless, the exchange of one simple base for 1/3rd of your outs for an inning is an exchange that will diminish the chances of scoring. The thing is that sacrifice bunts have so long been a part of the game that it flies in the face of everything we believe to know when someone says that they’re not an effective means of increasing your chance to score. They’re just not…and all the rhetoric in the world doesn’t change that.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 3, 2008 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions
You are saying nothing new. That is correct.
But mostly, it is because you are parroting the more contemporary “baseball knowledge”, founded on the mathematical calculations surrounding the observed situations, collated. Yours is the “new rhetoric”.
It is not that I do not accept math. I am not a flat earther. It is that I do not believe that any mathematical model for situational baseball is accounting for all possible variables. The vast majority of influential data is being ignored in favor of that data which is more easily observed, quantified, and measured. That is lazy, and results in bias.
Your statement – channeling prior sabremetricians word for word, as though this is an absolute mathematical property – that the exchange of one base for 1/3 of your outs diminishes your chances of scoring, is right there in the sweet spot of my point.
What is the objective of the offense in that at-bat? 1 run or as many runs as possible? It makes a huge difference as to how those 3 outs are managed! Has any sabremetrician started to interview managers and quantify, sort, collate the answers? Call me when you find it.
What is the game situation when the sacrifice is applied? That makes a huge difference in how the defense responds and adjusts to the new offensive threat. Does the defense have a large enough lead to not even care? Is it a final inning and the defense is playing with 6 infielders? Is the outfield also drawn in? Are there injuries to the team on defense that have crippled their infield against their normal fielding efficiency? Have sabremetricians even settled on a proper measure for defensive efficiency? What are the arm strengths and accuracy of the outfielders? How well informed is the defensive manager about those arms? How badly does the offensive manager fear those arms? How much of a gambler is he this day? How important is this particular game to the overall objective of the season?
What is the pitcher’s ability to prevent bunts in the first place? Do the managers on defense track this? Do they make adjustments because of this? Is it possible that there is a pitching strategy that can be applied to this function? If so, will pitching coaches and managers leverage this in the future? Have they already? Will it be something that makes one team stand out in their ability to defend against the sacrifice bunt versus other teams? Is it something that even knowing managers can only apply selectively because not all pitchers on tehir staff have the skill?
What hitters on offense are most capable of proper execution of the sacrifice bunt? Are they available to pinch hit for the current at-bat? What impact might that substitution have on any subsequent positional allotment when the pinch-hitter needs to go into the field? Does the manager have further defensive resources to overcome this downstream liability? Is it late enough in the game that the manager has fewer defensive options, but the value proposition for the possible score and extending or winning the game now overwhelm the future defensive liability? What point is that ofr the offensive manager in question? Who interviewed him and quantified that?
Is the batter’s bunting efficiency as effective in the current season as he has been over his careers? Is his efficency better or worse? Is he in a slump and not seeing the ball well at the moment? Did he get hurt earlier in the game? So badly he will might DL afterwards? Is he hiding something that happened a few days ago?
CKOD, I could sit here and do this all day. Your supposition has to be that your model defines a box on a scatter plot, and all those millions of other variables and influencial possibiities are outliers which have not proven to be capable of pulling your model outside of your box. My point is that sabremetricians have chosen, among themselves, where the lines of the box are being drawn, and are doing so with a bias towards what makes it easier for them to track and satisfy their data needs. And that’s fine, because it allows for accurate data aggregation of prior events. But the statement that this bias implies future accuracy is a conceit because it insists that the outliers shall be of no consequence the next time the situation presents itself, that outside the box there is no success. This is nonsense.
It’s a lot more fun to grab a cold beer and enjoy the timeless variations of the human condition, and relish in the power of concentrated effort to break outside the box and succeed.
Holy fuck
Wow. Just wow.
Sit down and have that cold beer you suggest. Or several, please.

Actually Bill James agrees with you, Stirrups
He wrote an essay about realistically seeing through the fog of what we thought we knew. James now feels that the variables appear to make clarity more certain but he insisted if one squinted at the numbers all they revealed was that there was too much we didn’t know to have anything to rely on.
Not when Wood is the batter with 0 out
I think Wood will be good eventually, but right now he’s not a contact hitter. At this stage in his development, he hits big or K’s and doesnt draw enough walks. And his chances of K’ing or popping weakly are too great to let him swing away. If Vlad were up it’d be different.
I have to agree with stirrups below in that I like sabermetrics but its not universally applicable. Sometimes you have to look at the specific situation.
On the plus side...........Kendry Morales Hit a GRAND SLAM yesterday in the 1st inning.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
