What'chu talkin' 'bout Willits?
Looks like Willits is back for a 2nd go around.
From the article: "Some of our guys in the outfield have played a lot and we're going to rotate him in and see if we can get him some at-bats this weekend and get some guys off their feet," manager Mike Scioscia said.
let's hope that he can actually find some at-bats while he's up here this time. i'll be honest, i'm kind of happy to see the kid back up, however weird it seems to me to shorten our infield depth at the moment.
on the other side of it, Brown goes back to AAA after collecting his first major league hit, with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 9th to make up for last nights game.

seriously
Why does Scioscia hate him so much? Why is the organization unable to understand that, if given consistent ABs, he’s a quality major league hitter, unlike, say GMJr?
Hunter was the DH last night. That, coupled with this move, makes me wonder whether his toe (or some other body part) is ailing him.
On Second Thought
I’ll reserve judgment. Scioscia’s comment is pretty cryptic; perhaps he’s getting impatient with the lack of production from both GA and GMJr., and we might see both Willits and Rivera slide into the lineup, while possibly also shifting Vlad over to DH more.
Reggie, Reggie!
Spark of energy, glad to see him back, if only for awhile.
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
Evidently the OF coverage need is CF
Rivera is not and never will be a CF!
That double Brown hit last night might have been the 2nd hardest ball hit last night…Nap’s HR went a LONG way! Brown’s line drive went over a leaping Ellis and then looked like it was on astroturf and went all the way to the wall! That does not happen often on natural grass!

2nd note...any one notice that we pitch well with Mathis behind the plate?

I dunno
I think the Angels just pitch better when it’s Saunders/Santana/Weaver on the mound than anything else. I don’t have time to look up the numbers but I always remember Naps having good CERA’s compared to even Jose Molina. I may be mistaken though.
Ervin and Saunders pitch well no matter what
And Moseley stinks no matter who catches him.
However, one significant split is between Weaver and Garland. Weaver does better with Napoli at the plate, while Garland does better with Mathis. At least, that’s how it’s worked out so far.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I'm sure it has worked out like that
However I wouldn’t start putting any type of credence in the results until we had at least like half a season worth of data.
Lackey threw a lot better...
with Nap behind the plate last season. They were paired for the vast majority of it, if I recall correctly. I’d imagine we’ll see much of the same when Lackey returns.
Did you see that Gary Coleman (Arnold) is getting a divorce?
I didn’t even realize that twerp was married.
Arte, please buy the Angels back from the Red Sox...they've owned us long enough.
how old/banged-up is our outfield?
Seriously, it’s the BEGINNING OF MAY and Scioscia’s talking about guys needing rest? As Borderline mentions above, why would you sit your best hitters at this point in the season, unless they’re really more fragile than the team is letting on?
Those are some big measurements!

in response to: "why would you sit your best hitters at this point in the season"
because it’s better to rest them now and have them in the playoffs than vice versa

rest them in august/september for the playoffs
May is not the time for rest. That’s the problem, though—apparently, they need it. And that’s what worries me.
"Need"
Even this word is a bit ambiguous. I’d argue that a perfectly healthy player sporting a line of .229/.303/.364 “needs” a few days off as much as anyone.
i understand that
a day off here and there is one thing, but it’s another to bring up guys for the specific purpose of giving your whole outfield days off in May. seems a bit desperate, to me, like our OF is really banged up already. i could be overreacting.
Or sucking
Scioc is a master of press diplomacy, I’ll give him that. Let’s see how he actually uses Willits. Do you not agree that an OF/DH rotation of Rivera, Hunter, Willits & Vlad would be superior right now to one that includes GMJr. (the player whose stats I cited) or GA? Maybe give both GA and GMJr. a few days off? Not because they’re banged up, but because…well, like I said. The numbers.

I was going to reply to your posts above, but wanted to read everything else first. Everything you wrote, I believe, is relevant and correct, regardilng Willits, Rivera, Hunter, GMJr, etc.
I don’t think Scioscia “hates” Rivera…...he’s just giving him extra time for his leg to heal while giving GA and GMJr enough rope to either hang themselves or produce like highly-paid major leaguers are expected to produce. Rivera’s proven he’s a second half guy anyway. As I’m sitting here typing this, I believe JRivera will be our starting LFer in 2009…........that is, until I start wondering what the hell they’re going to do with Figgins and Willits.
I think that maybe no one knows exactly what they’re going to do with all the OF talent. But lots of times, just like in business, if you don’t know what to do, just wait….....something will happen and things will fall into place. Then, whoever is calling the shots will look like a genius. Patience is a virtue.
