D-Mac goes Bat S**t

Our old buddy cracked 3 HR's in a game yesterday.  He is leading the PCL in HR's with 15, and is 6th in the league in OPS with a 1.056

Curiously 6 of the top 8 hitters in OPS in the PCL are third basemen.  I think he'll make the Marlins proud when he gets a good shot to platoon in the NL.

Praise little baby Jesus we are in first place and Figgy was doing well at 3B and will be back soon, otherwise I might cry.

Syonara D-Mac

D-Mac needs to go to Japan, where he can be the next Tuffy Rhodes. In the States, he’ll just be a minor league legend like Steve Bilko, unable to break through to the next level.

Crow should be coming at somepoint this year

He has already proven he has the talent to Major League hitting. He just hasn’t proven he can stay healthy.

Sea-at-ha-ha-ha that's funny.

Exactly...

His offensive abilities were playing themselves out at the Major League level in 2005-06 before the injury that derailed him completely. Remember how long it took Kotchman to adjust to the bigs? About 150 AB’s. McPherson had about 350 AB’s over three seasons with injuries in each – he just couldn’t stay healthy. He might have never been truly great, but he was going to be a fine everyday 3rd baseman or DH. No question.

McPherson had a SLG of .470ish right from the get-go with an OPS+ of 97. That tells me that he was going to be pretty solid. I can still see him with an OPS+ of 110 or 115 when/if he puts it all together. He is better than Tuffy Rhodes – he is a legit major league regular when healthy. Period.

these type of posts

i say the same thing everytime. Him hitting home runs in the minors isnt really news. Nobody doubted he can do that. Until he plays 90%+ of a season in the majors and produces similiar numbers, i dont think theres anything for us to be hurt about except maybe losing the naive fantasy that hed turn into a beast for us.

by the time he fully aclimates to major league pitching (a big IF), hes not exactly going to be a young hot prospect anymore. The guys almost 28 years old and still isnt a major league player, let a lone a star.

and as we know, youre health only gets worse as you age.

As we all know?

“and as we know, youre health only gets worse as you age.”

Not if you have a chronic condition that is successfully treated. DMac has a much better shot at being a productive major leaguer than any of the position players in our minor league system.

Back issues have a way of being chronic, though

And I don’t think McPherson survives a whole season without further injury.

Witty .sig goes here.

Hittin' the all-knowing magic 8-ball again?

Most definitely.

While is it likely that he gets injured, I clap politely when I see him succeed. Except if that success comes against my beloved Angels.

hah really?

tell me one player whos health has gotten better as he’s gotten older.

roger clemens? barry bonds?

My point was that if youre injury prone when youre 22 and 23, youre not going to be an Iron Man when youre 30

by ihearhowie2.0 on May 20, 2008 8:08 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ummmm...

How about Paul Molitor?

by elricsi on May 20, 2008 8:27 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

To name a few:

John Lester
Rick Ankiel
Bobby Jenks

I could probably find a lot more if I had the inclination, but those

Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds? Those are both guys who started having injury problems in their 40’s… McPherson is 28. My point is that some guys have specific health issues that can be treated and resolved.

ok, when dallas mcpherson becomes an everyday third baseman

and proves a reliable long term solution to someones team that they cant count on being healthy, ill be sure to eat some crow for you.

unfortunately that wont happen.

you may see lester, ankiel and jenks but until dmac actually pans out, ill think of him more along the lines of rich harden, rocco baldelli and mark prior.

He is better and cheaper than Quinlan

Who says he has to be an everyday player?

Sea-at-ha-ha-ha that's funny.

by hauldog on May 21, 2008 12:38 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

He could have been a Quinlan (backup 1b/3b) replacement midseason, plus he provides a power bat that we could have used on the bench.

Put it this way…the Marlins, who are one of the lowest revenue clubs in MLB decided that they could afford to take the risk…would it really have killed us to give him one more year?

Good point...

but I wonder if it was just Reagins “clearing the deck” of some of Stoneman’s dirty laundry?

McPherson

I liked his approach and his lefthanded swing, when he was swatting base hits and home runs in his short stints with the Angels.

Unfortunately, he never got healthy enough during his time with the organization to seize the third baseman job for himself. I’m sure the Angels gave him every opportunity, but he struggled to get on the field.

It sucks he couldn’t stay healthy, but considering those problems, the Angels had to make a decision on him.

Agreed

I very much doubt that even the Marlins, currently starting 99 OPS+ Jorge Cantu at 3rd, would give McPherson a starting job.

Go Dallas!

I’m not sure the Angels were wrong to be sick of him constantly getting injured. I think they feel 2007 was his last best shot with them and he blew it. The one thing I take issue is when people call him a minor league hitter. If you are one of the best players in the PCL, you should always at least be able to get by in the majors. Also, D-Mac’s career major league stats are decent to good already.

I have no idea if he can really play 3rd anymore, but he used to be OK there. Also, I think Cantu’s OPS will only go down, and Dallas will get his shot with the Fish if he keeps this up.

by elricsi on May 20, 2008 2:44 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope he succeeds

but 58 K’s in 138 AB’s, 42% of the time, doesn’t project too well at the major league level.

by LosAngel on May 20, 2008 9:34 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Can someone confirm this

I am under the impression that the angels offered the oft injured player a contract and he wanted more so the Angels pulled the offer. If this is true, after we stuck by him all those injury riddled years, then I can’t wish him well.

Young Angels - Proof is in the consistency. But I'll take flashes for now.
