Wood and S. Rodriguez
Well like a lot of you, I am sick and tired of seeing these two come up with runners in scoring position and absolutely suck and not ever produce.
S-Rod in his stay in Anaheim is batting .140 (8 for 57) w/ 1 RBI and 22 K's. Not to mention the other night, when it was obvious he cant hit major league pitching, scosh asks him to sacrafice and the guy cant even get a bunt down. This is a middle infielder that cant bunt, in our system...Come on!
B Wood who is another one that is fricking killing us this year he is batting .122 ( 5 for 41) with 14 K's. Not to mention B Woods stellar numbers from last year 5 for 33 (.152) with 12 K's....26 strikeouts in 74 at bats....Dont forget his total of 2 homeruns and 4 RBI's....Can you say SUPER PROSPECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am sick and tired of writing these guys off as rookies and small sample sizes etc etc etc. At some point you have got to hit, to stay around. It is pathetic, when watching the games you say oh shit wood and rodriguez are up, these two will be two out in 6 pitches....
Our depth is challenged, this I know....but the kids need to hit if they want to stick around. They have not made it hard for management to make a decision when HK and Figgy are healthy......the only decision the Halos have to make is to give them an aisle or window seat on the way back to SLC....Shit in my opinion each one should get a middle seat to remind them how much they sucked donkey Balls....
I had to get it off my chest!
Go Halos!

for the 5th time...
after watching Wood’s ABs tonight, i’m convinced he’s on the verge of coming out. he’s hitting the ball, hitting it harder and his pitch selection is getting better. give it a few more games before jumping ship.
S-Rod needs to be sent down. he’s slumping, he knows it, and now he’s pressing.
Let Wood play!!!
eh...
i think its funny that wood and rodriguez are both equally terrible at the moment and yet you think one has earned more ABs while the other is “slumping, knows it, and is pressing”. How can you honestly tell yourself thats only the case for ONE of them?
oh yeah, brandon wood’s reputation. Well newsflash, his reputation is destroying the bottom of the angels order and probably his own confidence, not to mention keeping a potentially surprising unknown from stepping in and contributing (reggie willits and napoli were not overhyped baseball america super prospects) or at the very least getting the chance. brandon wood has done nothing at the big league level to keep himself up here.
nobody is writing Wood off at 23 years old, which i think you seem to feel when you start defending him. But i am absolutely allowed to write him off in 2008 or at the least right NOW. people are allowed to get pissed off at rookies if theyre terrible. even you, who clearly loves your top prospects, have to be able to understand he has been awful. him and rodriguez together is at the point where it legitimately would cost most teams games. they simply dont do anything with guys in scoring position, and i mean ANYTHING.
there are endless other prospects in our system who probably watch wood and rodriguez and ask themselves why they get so much slack while everyone else doesnt even get a chance to show what they can do.
i can accept when people want to give GA and Frankie slack during shaky stretches because of their track records and what theyve done and mean to this team. I refuse to understand why people start treating prospects the same way.
for the record, wood’s ABs, whether you think theyre getting better or not, are still really really really bad. Hes consistently in 0-2 counts because of his long swing and bad pitch recognition. Sure, hes not striking out as much but thats deceptive. His ABs are still undisciplined and so he ends up popping or grounding out because hes forced to swing defensively at the pitcher’s pitch, not work the count and find the pitch HE wants. An out is an out anyway you cut it.

lots of words
but I think Wood is starting to look better, too.

he's actually getting into a lot more hitters counts
as of last night anyway.
and there are plenty of people who are calling for a trade already and writing him off as “terrible” and “a waste”. we’ve both seen it.
Let Wood play!!!

Nope
“there are endless other prospects in our system who probably watch wood and rodriguez and ask themselves why they get so much slack while everyone else doesnt even get a chance to show what they can do.”
Not on the 40-man roster, so there really are no other options except Matt Brown.
When those other options
hit 40+ jacks in a single season, they will get all the ABs in the world to prove they suck, too.
Witty .sig goes here.
They are definitely trying the patience of most of us who were excited to finally see them play
i understand a rookie is not going to come up here and hit a cover off the ball but i think its reasonable to expect a little more production then what you are getting. i am willing to give them a couple of more starts (not like me have any other option) before we send them down. but that creates another problem of bringing up another rookie who you can’t expect much out of. i think we just have to ride this out and pray that HK comes back soon.
I'd rather see Willits in LF
the other problem is
that they’ve been so highly touted (especially Wood) that when they dont hit a grand slam every AB and have 10 RBIs every game, we get pissed off.
the fact of the matter is that some players take time to get adjusted to MLB pitching and also to the pressure of trying to perform. Wood has been the top prospect 2 or 3 years… thats a lot of pressure to take upon yourself, not to mention the pressure of trying to shut up the naysayers (like ourselves and the “experts” that think he’s already declining).
once they shrug off the pressure and learn how to just go out there and play, things will start clicking. both of these guys (and especially Wood) are just too good to not pan out.
i’m really not freaking out about this. i think the real problem is that we’re building them up too much in our minds.
Let Wood play!!!

i agree with howie
and what u said about woods AB’s lately. ive noticed more patience from him and less K’s. he used to be almost a guarantee for 2K’s a game, and tonight, none, he even got into one pretty good that granderson made a nice catch on, and again in the 9th he got into one. i dont give him much longer before he busts out and we all finally see what he is worth.
the future looks bright

thats exactly what i'm seeing
he hit it really well off of Rogers, hit another one to center, and then that shot down the line that he got robbed on.
i give it 2-3 more games before he’s hitting better
Let Wood play!!!

About Wood
1. Those 41 dingers Wood hit at Rancho were probably the worst thing that could have happened to him.
2. I absolutely do not expect he will ever again come near that total in the majors. 25-30 absolute tops, and if he settles into a 15-20 guy hitting .225/.290/.470 and can play a decent shortstop, I can definitely live with that, too.
3. That said, I would not be surprised to see him flame out and totally miss. He just looks bad in his at-bats, and I can’t say one good thing about any AB he’s had that I’ve seen. Tonight, for instance, he failed to get into even a two-ball count on any pitcher (but he only struck out once!).
Send him down as soon as is humanly possible. He’s just so clearly overmatched.
Witty .sig goes here.
I really dont think he's overmatched
his ABs last night looked great, and tonight he had some good swings… he’s on the verge of breaking out of this, but something is missing. it may be patience, it may be pitch selection – i dont know. but once he figures that out, im sure he’ll be just fine.
i see him as a .270-.275 hitter with 30-35 HRs and somewhere between 120-140 Ks.
but with those numbers and his defense (which is fantastic), he’ll have a good career.
Let Wood play!!!

Are you kidding?
Not ONE of his plate appearances in Tuesday’s game did he even get to a two-ball count. Monday he got into a 2-0 count in the 11th, and lined out. Seriously, I could go on and on. He’s always behind the pitchers. Always! Maybe one time in eight he isn’t, and he’s so jumpy up there that when he isn’t and he makes contact, the ball just ends up in a glove.
Witty .sig goes here.
dude that lineout
was a shot down the third base line. a lot of his outs are just bad luck… hes hitting the ball hard, but it’s finding a glove.
Let Wood play!!!

Scioscia agrees with the Wood sympathizers...
Snippet from angelsbaseball.com:
Scioscia was quick to point out two swings by Wood in Monday night’s 12-inning win that could have made extra time unnecessary.
“He’s been getting better swings,” Scioscia said. “He just missed two home runs last night. He got under one and hit one to the wall.”

Wood is getting his chance NOW
Getting to play regardless of how he hits. He’s getting his chance. SS is open, c’mon and take it. (3rd open if we move figgins to SS)
Still, if he doesn’t make it this time, he will get another chance.
Rodriquez is going down as soon as howie gets back. Iz will back up.
I would like to comend both of these guys for their defensive play.

to keep these guys around…....so…something better start happening or the pitchers on this team will start losing limbs.

here is the batting order I propose
1-Izzy-SS
2-SRod-2B(I know he can’t hit, he would sac bunt every time with less than 2 outs and somebody on).
3-Vlad-RF
4-Kotch-IB
5-Hunter-CF
6-Napoli-C
7-GA-LF (not a demotion but we need production in the bottom of the line up)
8-GmJ-DH
9-Wood—3B
This is a strange line up but it spreads out the problem area. I know you need a good hitter in the 2 hole but SRod will just bunt with runners on and less than two out. The bottom of the line up has potential, at least, to drive in a run. You could flip Izzy and GMJ in the lineup but I wanted some protection for GA (assuming GMJ is starting to turn it around). Everybody has protection accept Izzy (who probably doesn’t need it) and GMJ. Is this too bizarre a line up?
Angels in 08!
Oh brother
Thanks for your observation – now how about some alternatives?
The fact is these guys ARE our best alternatives. Neither is ready, but due to injuries, they are being forced into a situation that the Halos’ brass would rather not have had occurred. I know this is news, but SOMETIMES ROOKIES STRUGGLE.
Glaus in 1998: 165 AB’s – 1 HR – .218 BA
Salmon in 1992: 79 AB’s – 2 HR – .177 BA
Kotchman in 2004: 116 AB’s – 0 HR – .224 BA
Wood has started four of the last five games (consistent playing time!) and is finally starting to look comfortable at the plate. Complete? No. Polished? Of course not. But the kid has enormous talent, and HAS to be given some sort of opportunity. Additionally, his defense looked superb (at his second best position).
Rodriguez was playing AA a year ago and just turned 23 a month ago. He obviously needs more seasoning, but who else is there?
Look, I don’t like seeing them struggle either. But we’re still winning (it’s true)....

Didn't Kotchman's '04 ...
include very FEW K’s. Rodriguez and Wood are a strikeout-fest.
Anyway, I like your positive spin and I hope that these two that comprise the lower-third of the lineup “black hole” come out of their funk.

Kotch is a contact hitter
with a level swing and excellent pitch selection. He’s always been touted as a high OBP player.
Wood is more like a Glaus-type, upper-cut swinger who has tremendous power upside at the expense of a long, slow swing and lots of pop-ups.
They’re really quite disparate hitters.

No Alternatives
As your first line suggests, beyond Brandon Wood & Sean Rodriguez, the only viable alternative is Matt Brown. As between Wood & Brown, I’ll go with the former. Freddy Sandoval (SLC) isn’t having nearly as good a minor league season as either Wood or Brown. Gary Patchett (SLC) is not an option. Hainley Statia is not exactly setting the world on fire at AA, so it would be unreasonable to expect him to do anything at the major league level without so much as seeing one pitch at AAA. Moreover, there ate literally no other infielders on the 40-man roster. To give anyone else a chance, the Angels would have to disable someone for at least 2 months (60-day DL) or release someone.
Thus, I ask those calling for “someone else”: who should be released outright, gone forever with nothing in exchange?
Uhhh
Bootcheck is not an infielder
You’re advocating the complete removal of a pitcher from the 40-man roster?
alright,
how about Quinlan?
there’s another guy I wouldn’t miss in the slightest

i really wouldn't mind
seeing statia get a shot.
if i remember correctly he looked pretty good during spring training.
"Here we go baby, 'bout f***'n' time!"
Kendry Morales :)
but seriously, i’d give it to Sandoval.
he’s not tearing it up, but .296/.392/.468 isn’t bad in the least

Nice post
I agree the kids need to get the opportunity, B. Wood more than S rod. I guess I am more mad at the situation and injuries that have thrusted these two into the lineup at the same time…there is no doubt that I would have no probelem with B wood getting his block of at bats, if he was the only one. Obviously now we have S rod and B wood and the rest of the lineup that isn’t producing…it is a much easier pill to swallow with just B Wood having a tough time than watching a 1-2 combo of Wood and Rodriguez… batting when the rest of lineup cant come up with any runs!
Could be work, could be baseball...but I got Spring Fever!!!!!
SUCK
the first adjective that came to mind when I read the title of this thread.
"At some point, a veteran player will more often than not find his stroke. You just have to show them a little bit of patience."
i see wood eventually figuring it out
he has had some pop in his bat as is hitting hard outs….
srod, on the other hand, either strikes out or hits weak ground balls every at bat. not promising.
they both need time. i see wood possibly starting to catch on sometime this season, if he continues to see consistent playing time in the bigs. srod, while his d is effective, is gonna need more time to figure out big league pitching.
if one of them ends up being a strong consistent starter at the big league level in the next season or two, i’d consider that successful.
'dondo for closer in '09
Let's just all pray that Chone & Howie get healthy.
I am feeling pretty much the same about these guys and that is their gloves are great and they both need to go on the DL for broken bats.
I don’t know why HK isn’t playing… I saw him at Quakes the same day Lackey had his 2nd rehab start there and he looked fine. Did he get hurt again? Or pushing too hard?
Come back number 9!!!
Bottom line is...we are winning and BW and SRod are getting experience.
Lest I repeat myself, we are winning…guys will get healthy eventually. Give BW and SRod some slack and enjoy the games, boring as they are…did I mention we are winning?!
This is bad Vlad and his band of wimps!
great point
we are winning, and only good things can come from their MLB experience.

let me get this straight
we’re winning?
Who goofed? I've got to know.
we aren’t necessarily winning games, rather we are getting freebies. series vs wsox and tigers. scoring 0-2 runs a game isn’t going to win a lot of games for the future. especially if we draw boston again in the playoffs. offense needs to pick it up
Go halos
"we aren't necessarily winning games"...
according to everything i’ve ever been taught about baseball, the team that scores the most runs wins.

you musta had the same coach i did
Who goofed? I've got to know.
Shit
I thought it was the team with the better PHIL rating per 9 innings, divided by pitcher WHIP with RISP and less than two outs.
But I GUESS your way makes sense, too.

Article on Angels Web Site RE: Wood and SRod
Title of the article is: Scioscia not fretting about rookie combo
"At some point, a veteran player will more often than not find his stroke. You just have to show them a little bit of patience."
Wood will be fine
A lot of you are complaining how we need to send him back down and write him off as a flameout. Lots of players begin their careers with rough starts but bounce back. Even if a good majority of you feel he is terrible, look at how well the Angels are holding together as a team. Damn, we’ve got the 3rd best record in baseball. This is a marathon season, not a sprint. For us to give up on Brandon Wood now would eventually be a big mistake. His swing will come around. I believe he’s only 23 years old… could half of you be great at your job with the amount of stress and pressure that comes from being a highly touted prospect? Nah, I don’t believe you could. Try and have some patience with him, he’s young, talented, and he’s not giving up, so don’t you give up on him.
Baseball is a game of patience.
i'll say it again.
Brandon Wood’s first 62 career at-bats: 9 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .145 BA
Matt Brown’s first 18 career at-bats: 1 H, 0 HR, 2 RBI, .056 BA
Sean Rodriguez’s first 45 career at-bats: 8 H, 0 HR, 1 RBI, .178 BA
Vladimir Guerrero’s first 27 career at-bats: 5 H, 1 HR, 1 RBI, .185 BA
Reggie Jackson’s first 118 career at-bats: 21 H, 1 HR, 6 RBI, .178 BA
Tim Salmon’s first 79 career at-bats: 14 H, 2 HR, 6 RBI, .177 BA
Brian Downing’s first 73 career at-bats: 13 H, 2 HR, 4 RBI, .178 BA
Don Baylor’s first 19 career at-bats: 4 H, 0 HR, 5 RBI, .210 BA
The list goes on.
Everyone please just relax. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that it takes a while to get used to major-league pitching, especially if you aren’t seeing consistent at-bats. All three of our guys have been highly touted minor league hitters. Please have a little faith and patience.
