Jose Arredondo
Did we just get a glimpse of Franky's replacment tonight? The kid has the stuff with his 95 mph fastball and developing split finger. It is going to be interesting to see how JA develops as a pitcher both physically and mentally while he is getting these types of opportunities.
I love Franky, and his stuff has looked a lot better in the past few weeks, but we sure could use the money that he's going to demand to put towards Vlad's heir apparent.
Thoughts?

I would hope not
It takes more than one good piece to have a shut down bullpen and Frankie is a good piece.

i think that's one idea
but personally, i think he’s 2 years away from closing, if Frankie walks.
he’ll definately be a set-up guy soon; he has late inning stuff.
ehh i dont really know… it all depends on the Frankie situation

agreed
i thought about it yesterday..shields would absolutely close next year with arredondo a full time 7th or 8th inning guy.
But..
the one thing that worries me is the insubordination stuff from when he was in the minors. closer is a really volatile position and id be worried about him just losing it Derrick Turnbow/Brad Lidge style after one ugly blown save.

Closer
has to be good consistantly over a long period of time or your taking a big, big, chance.

frankie.....
is consistantly shaky…...every time he is in it seems like there is an adventure…..i would love to have a closer who just comes in and puts guys away, instead of putting them on the bases…......i dont care who it is….....shields…...JA…....frankie….....whoever

You should probably rethink that one.
Please go away Justin Speier. Your work here is done. And take Quinlan's half-inch fielding radius with you.

I thought again...
but came up with the same one. Any brighter ideas? The opposition will be afraid of a dry one.

True test
Is to see how he bounces back from a rough outing. And he needs to show us that hitters can see him more than once and still not hit him.

His first batter faced was a HOMERUN
the next batter faced was a strikeout. That told me something about this kid.
But yeah, let’s see how he does in a larger sample size.

Agree
I think the mental/emotional makeup of a closer is one of the most important aspects. A closer has to be fearless and have a short memory.
One of Franky’s best qualities also comes back to bite him sometimes. He’s confident in all of his pitches in every situation—sometimes to a fault.

You all need to face the facts
Since giving up his first major league homerun with his first ever pitch in the majors…hes been unstoppable. Just like Frankie was when he first came up.
Hes got my vote.

i'm not going to commit to either side of the argument
given krods situation and the way dondo is pitching, it feels good to know if he keeps it up he could make a solid replacement.
then again, he’s young. he could collapse in a month or two. at that point, no matter how much you love or hate krod, he does save games.
i’d like to think that if he stays at this level, or even slightly below, for the remainder of the season, and krod demands $15m to stay, dondo could get the job and be successful at it.

Slightly ridiculous to be talking this way
1) K-Rod has been operating on a slightly gimpy ankle for most of the season. It’s clearly affected his velocity, as most of the time his heater is around 91, 89 if he’s been pitching a couple days in a row. Considering that, it’s amazing he’s been as effective as he has been.
2) That said, dominant closers are not a good bet going forward.
3) But, Frankie will be on the right side of 30 going into free agency.
4) Jose Arredondo has pitched in all of five games, and only in one of them with a tight (one-run) lead, May 21 @ Toronto.
5) The rap on Arredondo was that his fastball tended to straighten out despite his 95-97 MPH velocity, and his fringe-average slider and change weren’t good enough for the Show. He also ended up getting demoted to Rancho last year after an incident in which he stormed off the mound at Arkansas after being lifted during a game (he apparently lost interest!). It’s also said the converted infielder doesn’t have much feel for pitching, which is to say, he’s been good so far in the first go-round through the league, but whether he’ll be able to make adjustments after everyone gets a good look at him is another story. He’s only had a sub-3.00 ERA, but his peripherals are fairly strong, with a nine-ish K/9 in the last couple years or so.
In short, I wouldn’t get too high on him, or too down on Frankie. If everything breaks right, the Angels might have both healthy and effective, and in an ideal world that would certainly be better.
Witty .sig goes here.

Correction
“He’s only had a sub-3.00 ERA” three times in his career:
Year Team IP ERA ===================== 2006 RCQ 90.0 2.30 2007 ARK 25.0 2.52 2008 SLC 17.0 2.12
It looks better than it really was because mixed among those were some 6+ ERA’s.

half the story
he only started pitching in 2004.
His 2006 numbers at Rancho made him an all-star at that level and earned him the promotion. He was doing just fine at Arkansas last year (again, made the all-star team) but got demoted for his behavior. He got thumped in his first game back at Rancho (really thumped, something like 10 runs) but was otherwise fine.
His splitter looks pretty nasty to me, and probably to the guys who’ve whiffed on it, too.

A scoreless tie in extras doesn't count as "tight"?
I get what you’re saying, and maybe he hasn’t really proven to be nails yet, but I think it’s ok to be excited about a young arm consistently throwing 96 mph strikes and getting guys out.
Please go away Justin Speier. Your work here is done. And take Quinlan's half-inch fielding radius with you.

It is a game fo failure
It is easier to predict failure.
If Arredondo had not had his head straightened out by that demotion he would not be in the bigs (see B-Jecks for proof of that de facto policy in the Angels org).
The “rap” on him about the ball being so hittable is precisely what was worked on in Rancho (in addition to his insubordination tendencies). That he had a 2.12 era in the Salt Lake launching pad must mean something.
HE was the SLC closer to start this season, I guess his numbers earlier this year do not bolster a case for failure…

Not ridiculous at all given JA's stuff and what Franky is going to demand
Not to mention the fact that we are going need to find Vlad’s heir apparent. That money has to come from somewhere.
BTW, I agree with everything you say. That is why I qualified my post and did not demand that Franky be cut and JA instantly promoted. I agree that having them both would be ideal.

He’s 92-94 consistently now.

next year
frankie will leave for huge money.
Shields will take over the closer duties
Arredondo will take the 8th inning with Speier (JA is too young/inexperienced to take over now—just like Frankie in 2003).
We might go after another Speier type to help with the late innings.
I hope we use the Frankie money to lock up the young guys long-term….or a real bat to replace a soon to be dumped GA/Rivera in the offseason.
Go Angels!

Personally, I hope we re-sign K-Rod.
Not even in his prime, yet he’s the best in baseball at what he does, namely nailing down wins. There’s no one in baseball I’d rather have on the mound with a lead in the 9th.

Check his save %.
Paps puts up prettier numbers, but when it comes to the nailbiters, Franky beats him out. Last 3 years-
K-Rod: 108 of 119 = 91%
Papelbon: 86 of 97 = 89%
