Tuesday @ KC Game Thread
Los Angeles Angels at Kansas City Royals, May 6, 2008 5:10 PM PDT
That Fifth Starter position that was going to be such a killer has been alright (we are 2-4 in those games), all things considered.
There's one for you, nineteen for me

Front and center!
Highlandhalo in attendance from Scotland. Bloody hell.
Notice on MLB.TV Nick’s chose the red jersey tonight. I thought that was only for our Hispanic dudes! Cool nonetheless! ...
Don't call me Desmond
It's 1.11 am
But I’m off work for another week, so everything’s cool. As long as my little boy stays asleep so I better not drop any non-online f-bombs tonight
Don't call me Desmond
edinburgh's a great place
Are you going for the festival. It’s a freaking madhouse
Don't call me Desmond
GMJr.
I think I need to rant about him more often; seems that’s the only time he ever does anything productive, as I pine for more ABs for Juan Rivera.
do the coaches hate home runs?
is that why Napoli doesnt play?
im convinced that our guys are getting punished for power… thats why Vlad’s homers are down, and Napoli doesn’t get any ABs
Bring up Wood!!!
i thought about that
but if that’s the case, then Napoli should’ve played yesterday.
stupid platoon….
Bring up Wood!!!
they just said theat with mathis catching the team has a lower era...you guys might want to give the coach with a worl series ring the benifit of the doubt
I think Soth is waiting for Vlad and Torii to catch up
with Napoli’s number of homeruns before they let him catch again.
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
pitchers are happy when they win games
offense can help do that.
im just sayin… the playing time hasnt been too equal as of late. that upsets me
Bring up Wood!!!
Defense is Important
While I LOVE Napoli, I also LOVE Mathis. Mathis calls a better game, has way better defense, and it shows. I think Mathis is the better catcher!

Damn tough start for Gathright
Did a face plant into the wall chasing Vlad’s tre-bag then got froze by that nice heater

It's Clear
that KC has read the scouting report (or just watched highlights of the 2nd inning last Thursday), as their plan is obviously to force him to throw it over the plate.
Where the hell is your man?
I thought Howie was coming back … is he even in KC?
Don't call me Desmond
nah
they kept him in Rancho for one more start (tonight).
crappy weather in KC… didnt want to risk it.
he should be back by Tampa
Bring up Wood!!!
From Gameday
all of the pitches appeared to be up in the zone, which is not a great sign. Was he able to get anything down?
Rusty Kuntz just said:
“Best thing about being mic-ed is that it’s like you’ve got a disease. Nobody wants to be within 100 feet of you.”
Doesn’t the name Rusty Kuntz do that all on it’s own?
Don't call me Desmond
lets see if a - hart can have a better 2nd inning then he did last time
I'd rather see Willitz in LF
He had nothing to do with baseball operations
HE was the head of marketing for the Angels for many years. Took his orders from Jackie “middle market” Autry.
ARTE ASKED HIM WHAT HE THOUGHT OF CHANGING THE TEAM NAME TO L.A.
Uhlich said he thought it would make the Angels into the Clippers. He left the organization a few weeks later after over 20 years of service.
And walked Callaspo after getting 0-2.
I agree with surf, he just needs to calm down.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Yet not really that great.
Showing flashes though. The movement on his curve is ridiculous.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Bannister
is exactly the kind of pitcher who baffles the Halos. He’ll be the first to tell you he doesn’t have great stuff.
A little Bull Durham never hurt anybody
Look, Nuke-these Big League hitters are gonna light you up like a pin ball machine for awhile - don’t worry about it. Be cocky and arrogant even when you’re getting beat. That’s the secret.

Somebody send out an e-mail
when Vlad comes back from his little vacation. Do they serve fruity tropical drinks with little parasols where he is these days?

Witty .sig goes here.
Vlad Ain't Right
I’m almost hoping that it’s an injury, and not that he’s lost so much bat speed that he’s no longer much of a hitting threat.
Wow. Wasn't even that bad a pitch that time.
They are definitely sitting on his fastball though.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Adenhart appears to have the John Lackey 2003-2005 disease
where he becomes teh suck on two outs.
Witty .sig goes here.
They drop in front of him because he plays so deep.
That’s why he catches that one.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Understandable.
Neither of them is great, but Garret looks better so far. And that’s actually born out by stats like ZR at the moment.
~Till the Halo burns out...
i like his plan
pitch good and get the first two outs, than crap out and give up 4 straight hits
I'd rather see Willitz in LF
Matthews
wo oh just wow the fielding is for crap the batting is for crap … but the posing as a big leaguer is paycheck to paycheck!
GA
is BACk!!!
And you can LITE UP THAT HALO !!!

Physioc did want to let Torii Hunter's Double interrupt hsi stroy about Satchel Paige
Sucha terrible announcer. Rory and Rex, PLEASE. Physioc sounded exasperated as ll hell that Torii had hit that Double
I was baffled
by the Fanpost from the guy whose family actually likes Physioc. This is a prime example of why he’s just so bad. He does that ALL THE TIME!
it just seems sometimes that GA
doesnt swing as hard as other players, but managed so get such good wood on it to send it flying, thats why its cool to see.
I asked for some runs and the boys came through for me!
Kotch, Torii, and GAAAAAAA!!!!
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
I just joined the gameday thread
I agree that something seems wrong with Vlad, him swinging and MISSING (as opposed to fouling off) 88 mph fastball right down the middle seems very very very odd.
I just noticed in the dugout
Vlad (32) has a much more receded hairline than G.A. (35) ... check that passport and birth certificate again please…
yea I thought it was going to be a platoon.
Napoli should be starting at least half the games in my opinion.
That was me ...
NOT! ... I WAS drunk this weekend, but I would never hit on 20.
Don't call me Desmond
Not illegal to swing, Matthews
just so you know.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 6, 2008 6:14 PM PDT reply actions
Given that the first two were borderline
and the third was truly a ball, I have a hard time faulting him though.
~Till the Halo burns out...
you know what i just noticed?
with GA’s last 2 homers, he’s been holding onto the bat all the way through his swing.
is that the secret to his hitting and not sucking anymore?
Bring up Wood!!!
Dunno but I like it whatever it is
When GA gets hots he’s absolute murder on enemy pitchers …
Don't call me Desmond
Juice going for early botg honours
... in case it all goes tits up, y’know …
Just saying …
Don't call me Desmond
HGH is officially worthless
Thanks, Stoneman
Free Willie Mays Aikens
Yeah
Despite the fact that he was pretty good last year, and has been surprisingly clutch this year-
It really is Stoneman’s worst signing. But then I remember that he kept Kotch, Kendrick and Santana when people said he shouldn’t, signed Vlad and Escobar, etc. You can’t knock ‘em all out of the park.
~Till the Halo burns out...
G.A. apologist work
has been a heavy burden so far this year.
I’m taking my two-day paid vacation and relaxing. I’ll see if I can talk to the boss about extending the break for me, too.

adenhart owns a nice bender
thats a plus ML pitch
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
It's movement is truly crazy on Gameday.
True 45 degree angle on it’s movement, which is nuts.
~Till the Halo burns out...
yea I'm as big of Napoli supporter as they come
but Naps doesn’t make that play
Of course, Naps would hit about 20 more homers and about 35 more walks a year than Mathis.
Is it possible to cross-breed a catcher named Matholi?
Free Willie Mays Aikens
he's afraid of the strike zone
too bad…got some good stuff
Northeastern University Huskies: Mediocre hockey, guaranteed.
so apparently
the people that have complained about Mathis, GA and Juice ONLY complain about players that don’t produce, because if those players did produce then you said they wouldn’t have anyone to bitch about.
I tend to agree.
Seems like Nick
is having command issues again.

They DO play 3-out innings down in Salt Lake, right?
or did the Mormons tamper with the rules?
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 6, 2008 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions
5 balls, 4 strikes
The Mormons have to have more of everything… which explains the name…
~Till the Halo burns out...
This time he was technically already in the jam by the time two outs rolled around.
~Till the Halo burns out...
That is amazing
Vlad just walked on four straight pitches and did not even swing once!

ill take it
way to go GA. as a DH too. maybe if he starts hitting in the DH position we can leave him there
I'd rather see Willitz in LF

Scott Olsen
just went 8 2/3 1-hit innings, and then loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth.
Got pulled for the mighty Kevin Gregg who gets the one-out save.
Man, how much do you think starting pitchers HATE pitching 8 2/3 innings?

He wasn't nervous
He just couldn’t throw strikes. Cost himself a chance for a W.

Being nervous and not being able to throw strikes
aren’t two mutually exclusive concepts.

Could we get a new catcher in too for Oliver?
We could use a few more homerun hitters in this game. Ha, ha.
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
Adendhart's not MLB ready
gotta get that command right. Too many walks.

If I hear the word "red sox"...POW!!! RIGHT IN THE KISSER!!!
You know, Rob over at 6-4-2 recently said our bullpen ERA
was second worst in the league. While that’s true, it’s not really fair. The back 4 of Oliver, Speier, Shields, and K-Rod have been very effective as a group, especially after the first two weeks of the season. It’s the kids going out for the first time + Moseley and Bootcheck that have really been getting nailed.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Our team pitching stats
are skewed by 2-3 EXTREMELY bad games, with overall consistency being otherwise pretty good.
by Caseys Kiss of Death on May 6, 2008 6:57 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm starting to come to the conclusion that team ERA and bullpen ERA are
well correlated with effectiveness. If you look at our top relievers , k-rod, shields, speier, oliver and o-day, you’ve got 2 blown saves in 16 tries and 3 losses
Choakland has 4 blown saves in 14 tries and 2 losses
Wouldn’t think that their ERA is half ours.
I dont know...
I thought it might help him. Try to swing some positive vibes his way.
I personally don’t really care for him.

Anderson’s panthership.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
That's rather Optimistic for Oliver
Optimist. GA has accounted for ALL of our runs. Oliver has just been doing a good job.
Don't call me Desmond
Yeah, but after Adenhart had been having so much trouble,
Oliver’s come in and slammed the door. I’m not saying GA doesn’t deserve it, but getting that inning and 2/3 was a pretty big deal.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Oliver has been fantastic these last two nights.
Go Angels, we could use a few more runs now!
Scioscia, "Roll the hole!"
GA by far.
We all knew the non-newbie BP members were solid.
K-Rod seems like the only exception, and that’s partially his fault for taunting with the fear of loss so much.
~Till the Halo burns out...
OK if GA and Vlad are getting hot at the same time

Youd be a great pitching coach
“Hang on sosh, i got this”
Zu walks to the mound
“Throw strikes (insert pitchers name here)”
Zu walks away from the mound
I'm a better coach
not only would I tell him to throw strikes, I’d also make clear that he should try not to throw balls.
Can’t mess with that type of coaching.
