Escobar back before the break???
Escobar has made so much progress in his two sessions throwing off the mound that Scioscia said the right-hander could return before the All-Star Game, which will be played on July 15. Escobar, who was diagnosed with a shoulder labrum tear in late March, was originally not expected to return until well after the All-Star break.
"I think if he's going to pitch in our bullpen, he could be back by then," Scioscia said. "If he's going to be a starter, you're talking about a longer process, like the end of July."
Escobar's role as either a starter or reliever will be determined by his stamina during pitching sessions and the health of the starting rotation.
"First, we'll look at his progression, and then we'll balance it with our team's needs," Scioscia said.

bullpen
no use in potentially ruining him for good by trying to get starters innings out of him.
Frankie
Shields

Oliver
Arredondo

Indeed that is a nasty bull-pen
...I suspect they’ll be very, very careful with Myspace if he comes back before the break – Joba-rules him or something similar.
Personally, I’d wait, make sure he’s absolutely rock solid and then unleash him for late innings work.
Assuming Frankie goes, what are the odds on him closing in 2009?

Slim to none.
He’s worth waaaaay more as a starter than a reliever and Garland will be gone. Judging by Adenhart’s numbers in SLC, he could probably use some more seasoning and will be our 6th starter next year.

But
He’s only worth more as a starter if he can actually pitch starter’s innings. Most likely, he simply cannot, at least not based upon what was said about the nature and extent of his injury back in the spring. He’s under contract through 2010. I think he’s far more valuable if he can pitch, say, 150 innings over 120 appearances as a reliever instead of 40 appearances as a starter. The chances of him being able to make 30+ starts in each of 2009 and 2010 seem remote, but I’d sure love to be wrong.

that basically is the greatest pen ever
you’ve got 2 guys that can give you 3+ innings, 3 guys that’ll give you 2+ and 1 solid closer.
holy crap, we’re going to be awesome.

he better not be starting games at any point this season...
our rotation is firing on all cylinders, so other than injury, he shouldn’t take anyone’s place.
not to mention what was stated above: don’t ruin him in a possible failing attempt to make a great rotation greater.
oh yeah, and that makes our pen bomb.
my bad...k-rod is good.

whoop- de- fricken-doo!!!!
escobar back?!?
i thought he was done for the year
as they say, you can’t ever have enough pitching
the only thing that could hurt us is ego
i see no problem with escy, shields, speier, or dondo
frankie closes, so no ego problems
a starter could go four innings and give us a chance to win
of course, a starter wouldn’t be pulled after four if he hadn’t given up many runs
but i was thinking about the seventh game of the world series
come on home my-space, there’s a mound with your name on it

ok ok, hypothetical question here:
If Escobar comes back and is placed into his (rightful) spot into the rotation, whom does he replace?
That’s the question I’m much more concerned about right now.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jun 11, 2008 2:13 AM PDT 0 recs
we replace scoiscia
then put escobar in the bullpen
he’s already stated that he’d go there
sorry, i didn’t like your hypothetical

play my game, damnit
From the quote above alone it looks as if Escobar could see time as a starter this year as early as July.

there's plenty of time
for a SP to get hurt. So sure escobar could return to the rotation—if someone gets hurt. barring injury though, he’ll be in the BP.
only issue is - who will be long relief? escobar can for 2-3 innings i guess. but do you really want to use him as the guy that comes in when we are losing 6-1 in the 5th inning. i don’t know. i guess we can get oliver stretched out and make him the long reliever - he’s not a lefty killer anyways, so no use having him just for leftys.

ET and Oliver could both go around 3 innings
i believe.

I had this same injury and surgery
Based on my experience, it would be pretty amazing for MySpace to return to form this year. Also, it is very easy to re-injure if not properly healed.

isn’t this basically what Fat Bart had? it has taken him how long to rehab it? I won’t get my expectations up at all…anything we get from MySpacobar will be pure 100% bonus!

just call him "Fart" for short...

I'd use him where we use Oliver now
Like, when Weaver throws 100 pitches in five innings, and the game is still close. Throw Escy out there for 2 or 3, and save Oliver for special situations & blowouts. What a nasty bullpen….
