Figgy and Aybar
They are coming back. I'm sure we all know this already, but one of the latest posts:
Now for the hard questions. Figgy first: Do we send Wood back to high salinity waterland, or do we keep him and cut (trade) the Q?
Now for Aybar. Who is our starting shortstop. Iz or Aybar. Or do we platoon them like our catchers?
Tough questions.

yeah there's no way Wood becomes the new Q
he needs consisten playing time, and he obviously won’t get that here.
he swings a lot better and looks bette at the plate when he plays every day.
send him to Salt Lake, let him tear it up down there, and he becomes a starter next year.
tough call on the SS… i’d say platoon, but i hate ‘em. oh well. just let Gazoo have a little more playing time right now. he’s ripping the cover off the ball

Easy
Wood to AAA, he needs consistent at bats and just more seasoning plain and simple. Quinny Pop is back on the bench and is actually valuable insurance. Aybar is eased back into the starting SS position with a little early platoon and then Izzy takes his post back on the bench as another extremely valuable role player at every infield spot except first base.
All goes out the window though if Izzy continues on a tear and Aybar can’t get his swing back, but I just don’t see that happening.

No soup for you
I had thought Izturis was not good on D at SS, but his zone rating is better than Aybar’s (and Aybar’s is real good). I don’t like platooning at SS, plus the Boy KIng hits lefties better, so he wouldn’t play enough.
I kind of want Wood to stick around longer and keep working with the MLB staff, plus I like him on D at 3rd (after Figgins of course). If Wood gets hot he might even be useful at DH sometimes.
I say send Aybar down and let him get regular time at SS in SLC.

this is a no brainer
wood is hitting like .120. that kind of production doesnt play in the bigs.
he needs to be in AAA for the rest of the year IMO. Id call up matt brown before wood in case of an injury just to make sure wood is getting to play everyday and fix his approach. hes too important to keep screwing up with the yo yo treatment
Aybar is a reserve until maicer cools off. If he comes back hot, he’ll earn more playing time. Its a good problem to have

besides
quinlan can play 3rd, 1st, and the corner outfield spots. wood’s value came because of 3rd and SS depth. is aybar and figgisn are back, wood would be third string at both positions. Kind of a waste to have such a potential masher sitting on the bench everyday for that

i like the point about yo yo-ing him
if he can stay the rest of the year in AAA, his approach/swing/pitch recognition should be fixed and ready to go by 09

No question about it.
Izzy is hot right now so he continues to start until he cools down.Wood should be sent down to SLC and quinlan stays.

Wood to SLC
needs to play everyday, etc.
As for Izturis/Aybar, it’s a good problem to have. Personally, I think they should stick with the plan they had coming out of Tempe, which was basically to platoon them. Aybar is probably the future, but at present, Izturis is without question a more accomplished hitter, and not much of a dropoff defensively (more steady, if less spectacular). Izturis has proven not to be the most durable guy, and therefore probably is not suited to playing 150 games/ year. But by basically platooning both, hopefully they both remain productive and healthy.
Izturis is hitting .311 since coming off the DL and .328 if you include his last seven games before getting injured, as he had actually begun to climb out of his season-opening slump just before going down. Since returning, he’s got an OBP of .360 and an SLG of .398, for a .758 OPS – not bad at all for a SS.

As I said in another thread, platoon Izzy/Aybar based on defense
Start Izzy behind strikeout pitchers, Aybar behind finesse pitchers, and flip a coin behind Weaver.

Devils advocate
What happens if Aybars batting avg and terrible OBP continues to plummet (as was the trend prior to his injury)? I’m a big defense guy but if the avgs are 50 points apart and OBP 80-100 pts apart?

Aybar should be nothing more then a bench player
Until he proves he can hit major league pitching, which has yet to happen
Get rid of Quinlan
by edhoo on Jun 13, 2008 5:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Eh. .270 avg is okay
The larger problem is that Aybar has yet to prove he can WALK against major league pitching, or failing that, hit for a little more power.
