New York Mets fire Randolph
Despite last nights win, Willie gets cut:
"-- ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- After weeks of speculation that his job was in jeopardy, Willie Randolph finally got fired by the New York Mets while most fans were sleeping.
Randolph was let go in the middle of the night Tuesday, 2 1/2 months into a disappointing season that has followed the team's colossal collapse last September."

You think they would’ve had the decency to wait ‘til
-a Mets Loss
-the team isn’t on the road
-an hour when Willie would reasonablt be awake

The guy is in town, is a class act, a decent player in his day, needs a job...
I wonder if he could be a batting coach?

he hit for no power and had a league average BA.

Just classless
What a joke. They handled this about as poorly as I can imagine.

Star of the Canon AE-1 commercial back in 1983...
that’s about all I remember about Willie Randolph. That’s the camera I got for Christmas in 1983. Still have it.

Silly coincidence...
I went looking for that commercial on the internet…here’s a little nugget I dug up from an October 2006 USA today article:
Omar Minaya, major league baseball’s first Hispanic general manager, was once just a budding part-time model and actor trying to make enough to supplement his minor league baseball income.
Who would have imagined 25 years later after filming a Canon camera commercial with Randolph (“I was the guy sliding into him,” Minaya says), the duo would be leading the Mets to the National League playoffs?
Ultra-bizzare…

He and Toree were both in New York-area commercials for Subway (the sandwich place)
all of last season, and maybe the season before it. Now they’re both gone!

You Think
they would have done this before the trip, or at least after a loss. An organization mired in ineptitude.
I was really hoping that the Halos would complete the comeback last night…not only to see them win (bien sûr), but I was wondering if Minaya would come down to the dugout and fire him right then and there.

ACT OF MERCY
BY FIRING RANDOLPH OUT HERE, the Mets showed mercy in having Willie avoid the onslaught of media types that pollute the big apple. He can clear out his office in peace now with the beat writers all stuck at the Costa Mesa Sheraton.

Unfortunately for Willie,
the east coast media does not feel that sports west of the rockies is serious, so they do not send the full contingent. All the beat media left behind, will be sitting at the airport like sharks chasing chum.

I wonder if he has to find his own flight back to NY
That’d be funny

If you wake a guy up in the middle of the night
to fire him over the phone from 2600 miles away then, yeah, you are a cheap enough bastard to get a refund for his travel bookings and force him to find a way to get his own self home. And you probably make him get back to NY first so that he has to buy his own boxes and clean out his own desk.

Minaya was in Anaheim
The press release was at 318AM EST, so I am sure they talked until then after the game.

Damn, this thing has turned into an all day saga on ESPN. Who'd thunk that!
Can’t wait to see if the Angels are even mentioned during the game broadcast tonight.
The internet destabilizes every hierarchy it contacts.
