Rosenthal: Dur... Angels should go after Teixeira ...durr

This guy cracks me up.  It's pretty obvious to even a casual baseball fan that the Angels, while having a solid roster,  could use a big bat to push them over to proverbial hump (Bawston).  I said "could use" because while it's not a bad idea to have an extra 30+ HR's, I personally think we can get to the series with the team we have right now, barring injuries and some players slumping.

Here's the main offender for me in this article:

"Their first baseman, Casey Kotchman, is statistically comparable to Teixeira this season, and just as strong a defender. But Kotchman, who has hit only one homer since April 23, is not the same type of impact player as Teixeira -- and lest anyone forget, Angels owner Arte Moreno likes his stars.

If the opportunity arose, the Angels could include Kotchman in a Teixeira deal, or send him to another club in a separate trade. If Teixeira then departed as a free agent, the team could collect two draft picks and install Kendry Morales at first base next season."

Statistically comparable and just as strong as a defender. To me, that's pretty much where the argument should end. I am no fan of Rosenthal, so maybe that and my love of Kotchman is coming into play, but are there any fans that think that a move like that would be anything other than stupid?

Wow this is a stupid trade idea

“durr” is RIGHT. I guess maybe JOHNSAMO > Ken Rosenthal

I would keep Casey over Teixeira any day.

I read this article earlier today and was too disgusted to write or even mention anything about it on HH, let alone give Rosenthal any extra traffic on his ridiculous story. The way Rosenthal discredits himself within his own piece is laughable.

The internet destabilizes every hierarchy it contacts.

Sounds like Rosenthal is basically saying

“The Angels should trade equal players, plus throw in some extras, so they can have a player who gets more media attention.”

You forgot to add this nugget of wisdom to "Ken's" statement:

...”and pay him $10 million more per year.”

Perhaps Rosenthal’s penchant for covering New York teams, especially the Mets over the past few weeks, has made him project their personnel philosophies onto other obviously less familiar teams.

If we could get him w/o moving Kotch I say do it

Or maybe you have not noticed we are 12th in the AL in OPS.

Personally I think if we could get him, potentially he could be the star to build the team around. Signing Vlad to a long term deal does not look like a good gamble at this point. Let Vlad walk after the option year, basically.

It is very apparent to me the Angels need a bat.

That being said Rosenthal’s thoughts on this are ridiculous. Not Dayn Perry ridiculous but ridiculous none the less.

The Braves are not going to move him.

What's the point of keeping Kotch again?

They play the same position. Do we maroon Kotch on the bench or move him to some other position that he has no experience with or what? If we get Tex, we use Kotch to do it- there’s no way of getting around that. It would be STUPID however. Kotch is younger and will be significantly cheaper for the forseable future.

We don’t need power, we need our current roster to stop slumping, Kotch included. They are in the process of pulling out of it (16 runs last series vs the Mets). Its just going to take a little time.

Well one DH's and the other plays first.

The 680 OPS they are flaunting the last 7 days does not agree with you.

Neither does the 693 OPS they are rocking in June.

Come the playoffs, and yes that is what I am worried about, Mike could easily get both of them into the lineup. Worry about the rest later.

Papi-less Boston offense dominates ours.

Tex -- 2008 OPS

not that great this year at all. Then again, he’s been bad the 1st half the last few years only to hit like a freaking hot-star the 2nd half.

I agree though that it’s all about the Playoffs. I’m not confident Vlad has what it takes to perform at a high level there—he hasn’t done so yet. Do we rely on hunter? I guess we’ll be relying on the pitching staff again.

Go Angels!

Relying on the pitching staff

That trick never works.

valid point

i sure hope we don’t look back at this team 5-7 years from now saying “great team that made it to the playoffs every year, but never could get to / win the world series”.

Go Angels!

Whatever happened to the theory

that the playoffs are a crapshoot?

And to those who worry about Boston:
If Boston gets knocked out before the Angels even touch them, are we just squabbling over nothing? And since when do we care THAT MUCH about Boston? I hate them as much/more than the next guy, but I am not willing to reconfigure my team, jeopardize the future, and spend more money, for the CHANCE we face them in the post-season. And as much as a I hate the Skankees, I miss the times when they dominated the AL East. At least then we knew we could kick their asses.

Stooopid..

all together idiotic idea… a list of what is wrong with this “trade” idea would be too long

If we are going to take on a huge contract

It won’t be for someone who isn’t that much better than someone who is almost free and still developing.

Angels Defense. Angels Pitching. Get past that. :-[
