dan uggla.......and his 23 homers

I am really curious to know exactly how close the Halos were to havin him on the team this year. Boy would those 23 homers look nice now.......but at what cost? Its hard to speculate how many wins that would contribute because obviously the wins of either Saunders or Santana would have to be subtracted. Its an interesting "what if" question. Im just curious to see what everyone else thinks about it. What say "yous guys"

well

I’m not sure that Uggla was even confirmed to be included in the deal, and the way that Florida was trying to play us, I don’t think they would have, and they didn’t trade him to detroit so I do not believe that they had any plans of including a player under team control like Uggla since they tossed dontrelle into the deal with Detroit.

Move him to third

K-brothers rule! (Kendrick & Kotch)

There's no telling

how many homers he’d have hit in the A.L. (my guess is fewer), and the number of losses we’d have experienced without Saunders AND/or Santana would be far from offset by Uggla’s offense.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Jun 21, 2008 8:22 PM PDT reply actions

he just had a bases clearing triple to beat the A's............

Some of those wins by Santana and Saunders could have been won with less stellar pitching and more consistant O….......thats JMO.

Yeah

All I have to say about Uggla’s offense is look what happened to Miguel Cabrera. Uggla wouldn’t have anything like 23 homers in the AL.

DUDE hes hetting over .400 against the AL WEST.

He would be helping us out no question, But how much is hard to tell because one of our starters would have been gone….....What if it was WEAVER? I wouldnt mind…..JK but Weaver has been the worst pitcher this year for the Angels besides the other 5th starters

Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by acuda27 on Jun 22, 2008 2:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yup. Above .400

in an amazing 21 at-bats. Nice sample size.

He also is one of the top strikeout guys in baseball…possibly the best indicator of how poorly he would be able to adjust to pitching in a new league. 86Ks in 270 at-bats. It would not translate well to making an adjustment to a new league.

Nevermind the absurdity of all of this because there’s no indication that he was ever ACTUALLY offered to us in any trade, but if he were included with Miguel, then we would have lost Kendrick, Santana, Saunders, Adenhart, Willits, and God knows what else to get it…look at the haul they got from the Tigers…and that was without Uggla (plus a poorly-pitching Dontrelle). There’s absolutely no way of telling how Uggla would have hit (nevermind the fact that, had we gotten Miguel, we wouldn’t be getting a ton out of him offensively right now, and would be losing HARD on his defense). Have fun replacing the 20 wins and 3 ERA we have from Saunders and Santana THROUGH MID-JUNE.

his 23 homers have his team 6 games over

and we’re 15 games over. no need to second guess or what if

what would the package have been? kendrick, mathis, adenhart, santana/saunders for miggy and uggla?

ya, our team would certainly have a ton more pop but how would you feel about miggy’s god awful defense at third? you have to remember hes already been moved to first in detroit his FIRST year there.

we had also signed torii before those winter meetings so it just wouldnt be working. wed be benching someone making 10+ million everyday with awful defense at third, figgins forced to play shortstop.

and our rotation would be much worse now and in the future.

needless to say, that was the best non-trade ever.

still thinking about this...

minus lackey, escobar, adenhart, and one of santana/saunders, or rotation to start the year would be

Weaver
Garland
Santana/Saunders
Moseley
??? Nick green?

and then moseley hit the DL last month so itd be even worse. Add lackey and its still very ugly and enigmatic.

lineup:

Figgins – SS??
Kotchman – 1st
Vlad – RF/DH
Cabrera – 3rd/DH
GA – LF/DH
Torii – CF
Uggla – 2nd
Matthews – DH/OF
Napoli – C

thats a shitload of DHs, and with uggla’s contract coming up soon, an extremely expensive lineup.

Also, the lack of pitching depth and minor league pitching depth would force us to overspend to fill rotation spots with the carlos silvas of the world and those types, and re-sign garland long term.

not only would we be selling the future, the present would be wildly expensive and expectations would be so high that the team probably wouldnt even be enjoyable if we werent the absolute best team in the league

obviously i cant be upset with the team that the angels have now

im just saying…......and playing the WHAT IF game….......it would def be nice to have someone on the team who has 23 homers…..and another guy who has 10 homers…....because come the post season…....and more than likely having to go to fenway…....having that firepower would be nice.

hah ya i understand where ur coming from

and i was just thinking it out so dont think i was trying to discredit you personally.

boston has offensive firepower, but they win titles because their pitching depth is just silly. pitching wins in the playoffs as much as we always feel its lack of offense. we had an awesome offense last year, we just got shut down by good pitching on the road and got injured

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jun 21, 2008 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

see i think of it a bit differently

i think really in order to win against the sox…......is to either…......(A) somehow get home field against them…....because they dont play as well on the road….......and/or (B) beable to OUTSLUG them at fenway….....because even as good as our pitchers are…....that team always finds a way to score a ton at home…....

What we need to beat Boston is to not have our team

half-crippled when the series rolls around, as has been the case in both 2004 and 2007.
