K-Rod Taking Aim at Saves Record
Nice Story From the evil 4 Letter network about K-Rod and his chase at the saves. Record. Currently Chasing...
Nevertheless, it's time for the Bobby Thigpen Chase to officially commence.
Also noting that no matter what Frankie dont care bout no one and what they say.
His flair for fist-pumping and gesturing recently prompted Joe Crede and Brian Anderson of the White Sox to complain publicly about his on-field comportment.
If we stay in close games. Frankie could get it. I prefer blow-outs than risking close games.

We discussed this after the White Sox series, but it still amazes me. Why does he think he has earned the right to express his opinion?

Not on my dime.
baseball is too expensive as it is; I don’t want to see a 10-20% increase in tickets prices just to have him on the team.
That being said, my previous comment was tongue-in-cheek. If anything, A-Rod would have precedence for the name S-Rod.

Show me the numbers...
that translate from a Frankie Rodriguez 3yr/$48million contract into a 10-20% increase in ticket prices.

I can remember getting into game for $3 a ticket.
Me and my 8000 closest friends. We got see exactly what our $3 deserved.
Boy those were the good old days.
The Angels sucked and no one went. Woo hoo.

I think your assertion that payroll directly effects ticket prices is wildly incorrect.

Compare 2007 ticket prices
to 2008.
I’ll just reference this fact with an article that Reverend Halofan himself wrote: link.
Just replace “A-Rod” with “K-Rod”, ”$-Rod” or what have you. The point remains valid: large salaries likely means high ticket prices, especially for a pitcher who averages 65 games/year at around that amount of innings pitched. Is K-Rod really so integral as to pay him as much as (or more than) a Vlad Guerrero or Albert Pujols?
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jun 27, 2008 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Prices didn't go up THAT much from '07 to '08...
And we added another $18 million to the pot in Torii Hunter. K-Rod is already making $10 million this year, you are talking about another $6 mil per annum for K-Rod’s amazing services.
I expect parking prices to go up, as the Grande A is too cheap by comparison to other parks. That’s too bad, because $8 is do-able for a working stiff like myself, but I ain’t paying over $10. I’ll walk if I have to.

I agree, 8$ ain't a bad price
compared to paying up to 20$ just to park at the beach.
But any more than that, and I’ll walk from LA.

Compare our prices with that of the league average then reference them against teams with higher payrolls
Our prices are good. I do not care what they were. Compared to other teams with similar payrolls and that of league avereage the Angels have an excellent price point.
So you are blaming Torri Hunter for the rise in ticket prices? Laughable.

An interesting, yet, irrelevant point
to make comparisons with other ballclubs and their ticket prices. Yes, our ticket prices are (currently) good, and fairly cheap, which is why we’re ranked 7th in fan satisfaction overall, and 4th in bang for the buck.
However as the team salary increases, by what would appear to be a paltry 12-13 million as of last year, the ticket prices/concession prices MUST go up to pay for it all. We, the game-attending fans, will pay for it ultimately. Tickets will be outrageously expensive - as of the 47-some odd dollar tickets the Boston loyal pay - and it will be increasingly difficult to justify spending several hundred dollars to take the family to the ballpark. Think of that relatively small increase in total team salary and how much of a ticket price it induced. Next year, we could be spending 20-30$ million more. This could lead to the 10-20% increase that I projected based on this year’s increase in prices compared to salary increases.
It’s a slippery slope, and one worth taking if it means winning it all; however, that said I won’t be able to afford much more than watching the game at home.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jun 27, 2008 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions
How is that irrelevant?
Fact: Player salaries do not directly drive ticket prices.
Seattle I would like to thank you for sucking. It allows me to get back to my roots: Hating Fremont.
Kobe tell me how my ass tastes
That's not fact, that's supposition
Salaries are simply a cost of business, one that must be recouped by generating revenue (a la ticket pricing).
It’s not the sole reason for ticket pricing, as factors such as park upkeep, advertising and demand all affect price as well.
However, it’s simply ignorant to say that an owner won’t share the cost of an expensive team salary won’t be shared by both the team and the fans.

your answer pretty much supports my statement.
There is not a direct relationship between the two.
My point is maybe you should not bitch. Compared to other franchise with similar payrolls our product is more affordable and has been for quite some time.
Seattle I would like to thank you for sucking. It allows me to get back to my roots: Hating Fremont.
Kobe tell me how my ass tastes
I'd say there's at least a strong correlation between the two
if not a direct 1:1 relationship.
Maybe I should stop complaining about a winning franchise that is still cheap. I just want to see the days of cheap tickets continue, rather than having to sell my car each time I want to go to the ballpark.

Check Cot's web site.
Our net payroll wnet up just less than $10 from 2007 to 2008.
Further, tix are a MAJOR source of revenue, but not the ONLY source. And, as you suggest, they are the source of revenue that is the most difficult to increase, due to issues with customer satisfaction and loyalty. MLB overall, therefore each team individually, is currently realizing mammoth revenue growth via new media sources which generate zero customer animosity.
oops, my bad,
9 million dollar increase, not 12-13. I was thinking the 103$ million figure from 2006.

I agree wholeheartedly with the loyalty mantra
praised for so long by the Angels front-office staff to the minor leaguers and up.
But when you’ve got someone like K-Rod who is chasing the almighty dollar, it makes no sense to be recompense him with loyalty when he shows little or none.

$440,000 in 2005?
Overpaid?
2002: Cup of coffee + playoff share for 24 innings of work – salary unknown – (0 saves)
2003: 86 IP for $312k (2 saves)
2004: 84 IP + ~5IP in ALDS for $375k (12 saves)
2005: 67 IP + ~6IP in ALDS/ALCS for $440k (45+3(playoff)=48 saves)
2006: 73IP for $3.8M (47 saves)
2007: 67 IP + 0.1IP in ALDS (forgettable) for $7M (40 saves)
2008: in progress 35IP for $10M (31 saves)
I might say for his time on the mound he is overpaid, only in the last two years. However, it is a high-pressure situation, so that time on the mounds comes at a higher price, especially when you are a cold blooded bat-bender like Francisco Rodriguez.
Pony up and pay him the darn $16M. He is worth it.

But I am not a Frankie hater. I just don’t think he’s worth that much money for a specialist role.

Closer
Don’t tell me a good closer isn’t worth much as a specialist. Having a closer [in his prime] who can shut the door down, as opposed to three different clowns [not referring to the Angels] of middling ability trying to close games out by committee is laughable.
Never forget to adjust Arte's payrolls for inflation
Cuz he shore don’t. In 2007 dollars:
2004: $113.1
2005: $106.4
2006: $113.2
2007: $109.3
2008: $115.2
Wazzup, Seattle?
Anyway, Anderson & Garland frees up $24 million with which I’d be more than happy to overpay the best reliever (by far) in Angels history, and a guy who is on track to set the all-time saves record. It is ok to pay top dollar for people who perform at top levels, particularly when they’re still young, home grown, and known qualities.
Besides, Arte’s broadcast revenues are more determinative than his incremental tinkering with payroll.

OK, AA...
but he is FAR from being considered a POWER 3rd baseman. Think about what you are saying.
I believe Troy Glaus in 2000 with 47 jacks qualifies as a power-hitting 3rd baseman. Not a li’l tike of a guy who pokes 4 or 5 over the right field short-fences every year.
