THE BEST GAME EVER THAT I ATTENDED

Without a doubt...Friday, August 29th, 1986.  The Detroit Tigers came to the Big "A" to play the Angels in a week-end series.  I was sitting up there in Angel Heaven...probably two or three rows from the top of the stadium on the first base side right behind about 100 Tigers' fans.  McCaskill started but didn't make it out of the 4th. The Tigers were steam-rolling along and as the innings wore on, the Angels faithful started to leave and the Tigers' fans were in full song.  I stuck it out to the bitter end....and I'm glad I did.

It's 12-5 going into the bottom half of the 9th.  Dick Schofield leads off with a single.  Burleson, Joyner, Downing all follow.  Jack Howell drives in two with a double and the Tigers go to the pen.  They bring in Senor Smoke, Willie Hernandez.  He doesn't fair much better.  Before long, it's a 12-9 game.  The bases are loaded and up comes the guy that started the inning, Dickie Schofield.  On an 0-2 pitch, he hits a bomb down the left field line that soars into the seats on the fair side of the pole.  Game over.  13-12 Halos with an 8-run 9th!  What a night!

The next night, Doug DeCinces wins it with a two-run shot in the 9th and they complete the sweep on Sunday with a bases-clearing double by Rupert Jones in the bottom of the 8th.  Loved that Angels Miracle Magic in '86!

I was at that game also,

but I remember Schofield’s homer as an opposite field bomb.

I was uncool before uncool was cool.

Sunday Game was Hendrick's 3-Run double

Jones did not play in the game – that was the day of the Cerritos air disaster when a small aircraft hit an Aeromexico jet. You could see the smoke form the freeway heading south on the 5 to the game.

This game has been brought up several times...

last I remember hearing about it ws immediately following the Torii Hunter walk-off grannie from earlier this year.

While fortunate to see the 2008 version, I am jealous in that I was not able to attend this 1986 classic barn-burner. There must have been a contingent of los Tigres fans, what with 1985 being their last taste of glory. Don’t see many of those Tom Selleck-worshipping “D”-hat-wearing folks around here any more.

Goat, you are going to have to google “Magnum PI” to know why I mentioned Tom Selleck, you fetus, you.

The greatest game i ever went to

was 2002 WS game 2. It was absolutely crazy 12-11 was the final score. Both starters knocked out by like the second inning. Wow.
second greatest game i ever went to was angels-yankees game 3 ALDS. The yankees were leading the angels by about 6 runs or so in the 4th or 5th inning. I go and get an adam kennedy shirt (after i watch him hit a HR on the tv in the team store). I quickly go back, and watch the angels come back and win. It was all the more sweeter because there were 2 yankee fans sitting infront of me (although they werent typical yankee fans, they were actually pretty nice).

OK, you are talking 2002's ALDS; '05's game 3 was in NY...

but, man, I am jealous that I didn’t get to go to 2002 WS game 2. I went to game 1, 6 and 7. My sister and I shared my “lottery bracelet” number and got four games worth of tickets; she got the game 2 tickets. If I had had any semblance of a brain, I would have used her bracelet (it was going to be able to get tickets, too) and gone back and gotten another crack at some game 2 tickets for myself.

However, I was too ecstatic at getting ANY ws tickets and was fearful that my going back and getting more would continue my personal jinx on the team and they would be eliminated. Needless to say, I don’t believe in jinxes or indian burial grounds under the Big A anymore.

Yeah. They know. Good lads. And I don't lord it over them, either.

Like I said, best decision I ever made. I sat at home watching the game with my wife and taking calls from them in their seats, and almost cried with joy on the way to the stadium to pick them up afterwards.

greatest game for me

during the ‘95 push. little league always got a free game once a year, got to carry my district’s banner out in front of everyone, and got to watch the angels fall behind and get 3 or 4 runs in the 8th to take the lead and was the only time i ever saw percy live and he was absolutely, unmistakably f’in dominant. struck out the side on something like 11 or 12 pitches.

only time i ever got my dad to stay the whole game and not try to beat traffic.

i pledge alliegance... to mike Scioscia
and the angels way of baseball
and to each pennant and ring we are sure to win.

Never saw the end

I left my house determined that I would be damned if I was going to watch SF get the trophy.
My sis called me in an excited stupor an hour later to ask me what I thought?

“I’m pissed off, that’s what I think!”
“We just won.”
“That’s not funny” I tell her as I mope at the only thing open at that time, a 24hr Wal Mart (I was still in Ohio).
I had to rush home to catch the highlights on Sportscenter.

Bye Bye Ohio, hello Valencia!

Funny...

I couldn’t watch game 2 (on TV), because I thought I had jinxed game 1 by being there.

Like I said, after I sat through game 6 in my solitary seat (I went solo) in the left field bullpen, I don’t believe in jinxes any longer.

oooooo, that sucks...

The only thing similar to a situation like that ever happening to me was watching the 49ers-giants playoff NFL game about 6 years ago or so. The 49ers were down by about 49 or so, and i got so pissed off, i threw the remote, broke it, got sent to room by my dad, came back down, and watched the 9ers come back from the biggest playoff deficit ever (yes, i know, im a 49ers fan, spare me the ribbing)

I don't live in California anymore

And I was pretty young when i did live there, but the best game I went to was 2002 ALCS Game 5 when Adam Kennedy hit 3 home runs and we clinched a spot in the world series.

Howie for MVP!

I too was at the game that Ducky22 describes ...

But my story has a sad ending. I never ever leave a game early, but on this night I went to game with my college roommate and his parents, who had driven up for the day from Vista in north SD County.

It was such a blowout, my roommate’s parents were tired and hungry and faced a long drive back home, and they wanted to leave. Despite our protests that we wanted to stay, the parents wanted to go and my best buddy, being a good son, reluctantly agreed to leave early. I only agreed to go because my buddy’s parents offered by buy us all dinner on the way home.

As Ducky recalls, it was 12-5 when we left. We had a wonderful meal at a place called Herschel’s in Fullerton (anybody remember that place? Is it still there?) and then if I recall correctly my buddy’s parents drove back to Vista.

But imagine my shock and horror when I turned on the radio and realised I missed the greatest comeback in Angels history.

It still breaks my heart to this day.

Don't call me Desmond
