HD on KCAL

But not on KCOP.

I hate channel 13.

Let no joyful voice be heard! Let no man look up at the sky with hope! And let this day be cursed by we who ready to wake... the K-Rod!

The moveable object meets the resistable force

Both starters like to throw too many pitches, and neither offense likes to walk.

3 up, 3 down. The randomness of Weaver’s control comin’ up.

Now THERE is a stat that would interest me.

Average number of pitches thrown per inning. I wonder if high pitch counts in the initial inning are really a big deal. I see that high count a lot, but it seems to even out later on.

by Stirrups on Jun 28, 2008 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but

Weaver isn’t throwing first pitch strikes to ANYBODY. He also has sub-90 MPH velocity on his fastball. Combine the two and the Angels offense better have a REALLY good night.

Easy. Escobar to the pen until a starter falters.

Your premise is that Weave will be the first starter to fail.

Garland goes to the pen, or Weaver goes back down

No thanks

It’s ridiculous. Escobar will relieve, until & unless someone gets hurt. No matter how much you dislike Jered Weaver.

by mattwelch on Jun 28, 2008 7:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I dislike Jered Weaver

But I still think there are a lot of teams out there that would love to have him. Why have Escobar relieve if he is capable of starting? ... In my view, depending on when Escobar comes back, Weaver might be trade bait. Same with Garland.

Don't call me Desmond

by highlandhalo on Jun 28, 2008 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions

"Trade bait"

Is a term that dates back to the Bill Bavasi era. Does not apply to this team, particularly considering the suckitude of Dustin Mosely.

by mattwelch on Jun 28, 2008 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough point, Matt

And I agree with you that historically since the Bavasi days we have not made trades at the deadline. The excuse of Bavasi/Stoneman has always been: “We’ll do something if it improves our team without harming the existing fabric of our team.” Reagins is cut from the same cloth.

However … we’ve never been in a position before the deadline when we’ve had a stud like Escobar coming back like this.

If you can explain to me how Escobar taking Weaver’s spot in the rotation, and then shipping Weaver off to another team in exchange for someone who can help us in another area on the club, hurts the existing fabric of our team, I’m all ears.

Mind you, Weaver’s pitching a decent game right now.

Don't call me Desmond

by highlandhalo on Jun 28, 2008 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions

The hell?

How much I dislike Weaver doesn’t enter into it. The Angels have already shown they’ll send youngsters failing to Get It down (i.e. Santana) if better alternatives exist.

Witty .sig goes here.

by scareduck on Jun 28, 2008 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

"enter into it" = you are the only human who thinks it's a possibility

Santana was utterly lost last year. Weaver has been inconsistent. Big difference.

by mattwelch on Jun 28, 2008 7:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I will grant you this

He will have to get a lot suckier first. I don’t think it’s a likelihood, at least, not so far.

Look Matt, I'm not talking about his pitching ability

although Jered is the worst of our 5 starters right now. If Escobar comes back and is capable of starting, it’s clear to me whose job is on the line.

What I’m talking about is his bitch-like reaction to getting pulled. See how he likes it in the bullpen if you don’t want to trade him.

You know, we could get a good player who could help our offense in a trade for Weaver.

Don't call me Desmond

by highlandhalo on Jun 28, 2008 9:21 PM PDT up reply actions

What bugs me about Weaver

1) Throws too many pitches, and not enough first-pitch strikes.
2) Seems to regress a little every year.
3) Too damn emotional whenever anything goes wrong.
4) Weirdly can’t field his position. That’s the second crucial error Weaver has made this year.

Witty .sig goes here.

by scareduck on Jun 28, 2008 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Concur.

And he knows that he could have had the same offensive result if left in…

by Stirrups on Jun 28, 2008 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

but the error that led to the game’s only run being scored was Jered’s own error on an easily fielded squibber. He also made no attempt to hold the baserunner on, which is why Kemp took off like a bat out of hell and Mathis airmailed it into center field.

I don’t blame him for being pissed off. He should be. But for once he should be pointing the finger at himself instead of his teammates for a) making errors behind him or b) not giving him enough offensive support.

Lots of guys throw no-hitters through six innings. Very few of them end up with no-hitters.

Tough shit, Jered.

Yeah... Matt,

Now you understand why I don’t participate in game threads often anymore. Even if people can make the insane logic that Weaver didn’t get it done tonight because of the one misplayed ball, they’re ignoring that he’d still have gotten out of it if not for Mathis’ awful throw. Mathis would get blame of the game, no way you can give it to Weaver.

Willits needs to play, every, single, freaking, day. Now.

by 101halo on Jun 28, 2008 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

How'd you feel if you didn't give up a hit but lost

because your teammates flail away at everything as soon as there is anything resembling a rally, and your catcher overthrows 2nd base half the time he throws.

by MH252525 on Jun 28, 2008 9:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Weaver let the only guy who scored get on base

By botching a routine play on a dribbler between the mound and first that 99 percent of little leaguers would make the play on.

Weaver’s offense had nothing to do with that base runner.

Don't call me Desmond

by highlandhalo on Jun 28, 2008 9:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow, have you ever pitched a game even at say the HS level?

That was not a routine play. I’ve seen a ton of baseball and I can’t ever recall a ball moving that much, it started out going right down the 3rd baseline and wound up going towards SS.

If it was so routine don’t you think the Dodgers scorer would have given them a hit?

by MH252525 on Jun 28, 2008 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions

meant

the ball started off going towards the 1B line

by MH252525 on Jun 28, 2008 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I played college baseball

That was a routine play. All Weaver had to do was pick up the ball and shovel it in the general vicinity of his GG 1B Kotchman. That’s why the official scorekeeper ruled it an error. Also, Weaver made no attempt to hold Kemp on first base, which is why he got such a great jump stealing second and Mathis airmailed it into center field.

Both routine plays if you ask me.

his post ASB OBP was a very nice .370. I’d have no problem putting him at the top of the Angels lineup. If that is him “sucking” then bring it on. There is definitely a use for a guy that gets on base at that clip.

I think that's the point, though.

He is FANTASTIC at getting on base. As Rex said throughout Reggie’s AB, he was up there to drive in the tying run. Why in the hell was he trying to walk?

they draw some walks when nobody is on base but a recurring problem with the Angels offense

is they go into hyperdrive and swing at anything as soon as a rally develops. Certainly the A’s are the opposite extreme, but the Angels need to find something closer to the middle and soon. When they are scoring runs, Vlad is walking even with RISP and Torii is letting Kotch do some hitting too.

The 2002 team was mostly Bavasi’s work. Stoneman did a good job getting Eckstein for free and filling out the bullpen, but the offense was definitely in place before Stoneman got there.

Jim Edmonds for Kent Bottenfield and Adam Kennedy….... Seriously anyone with half a brain could have seen Bottenfield was a complete fluke and Kennedy didn’t have much upside because he didn’t walk and he didn’t hit for power, and at the time he didn’t even play a great 2B.
