Kendry Morales Update

It seems we are going to have to win with Johnny Rivers and without Kendry Morales.

I sent an email to a friend that works for the Bees and he gave me an inside scoop on Morales' Injury and here it is...

I talked with Tony Reagins earlier this week and it does not appear that he will be ready for another 3-4 weeks at the earliest. He is currently at the Angels' training complex in Tempe getting treatment and rehabbing that right oblique muscle strain.

That is BAD news with this piece of shit offence that has been showing up the last couple games. At least he'll be here to help us in the Dog Days.

Go ANGELS, dont fear Rivera is here....lets hope Scioscia doesnt forget he's here.

rivera should play left or right field every single day

but scoscia wont dare turn GA into a bench player. veteran respect > winning in anaheim

Absolutely. Rivera needs to be a starter in the 2nd half.

Comparing some of GA’s numbers:

GA last year: .297/.336/.492 BB%: 6.1 K%: 12.9 LD%: 19.0 HR/FB: 10.7%
GA this year: .255/.289/.372 BB%: 4.6% K%: 15.9% LD%: 21.1 HR/FB: 6.9%

Fewer walks, more Ks, less power – all the bad stuff. The only thing that has actually increased is his line drive rate, though I am skeptical of LD% as it is based on trajectory and doesn’t factor how hard the ball was hit. GA turns 36 tomorrow, so a huge turnaround isn’t likely.

Juan Rivera’s career 2nd half BA/OBP/SLG: .318/.366/.504
He turns 30 in July.

Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!

If present performance levels (or even slightly better) hold up ...

GA will not be re-signed next year. It would take a torrid second half (a la 2007) to make a case for GA being re-signed.

Even then

I don’t think we do it. GA is getting bought out and let go at the end of this one.

Too bad about the lingering injury for Morales

but it’ll heal.

this site is definetely a fan of Juan Rivera

I can understand the excitement that he generates… so much potential etc…
But don’t you think there is a reason he isn’t playing more, it sounds like everyone thinks there is this conspiracy to keep him down or whatever. My guess is he doesn’t hustle or show that he wants to be in there and maybe too he’s not a good locker room guy and has an attitude.
We sometimes forget that there is more to the game than what we as fans see on the field. These guys are like a college Frat, living and breathing together for months. Maybe he rubs some of the veterans the wrong way I don’t know.
I just think that its not like we are keeping Babe Ruth on the bench here guys… I agree that we should give him some more time on the field than what he has been getting but by no means am I drinking the Juan Rivera Kool-Aid at this point.
Plus he is probably gone after this year anyways

Relax... Everything is fine

Ummm

I think it’s more because he injured himself and was out for a season…leading Soth and Co. to conclude that he’s a risk and not worth playing every day. Not that that’s a GOOD reason, but a reason nonetheless…that, or a full season of Rivers-less semi-awesomeness led Soth and Pals to conclude that we don’t actually need Johnny at this point.

Could also have something to do with those naked pictures Garrett and Gary took of Mike…

Do not confuse the constant fan promotion of players NOT in the starting lineup,

with overall site support. Every player has their groupies. Groupies with players on the bench or in the minors are free to fabricate all kinds of potential and all kinds of alternate realities on behalf of their favorite players. The rest of us here merely don’t feel like expending the energy to respond to them all the time.

Its not that everyone is a die hard for Rivera, its that

our OF isnt getting it done this year (HGH and GA), and in 06 rivera was amazing, and is our best alternative at this point to stop seeing the suckiness of GA and GMJ

im not a huge Rivera fan myself,

but i wouldn’t mind seeing what he could do with a few weeks of work.
if he works out better than GA/HGH (which can’t be THAT hard to do), then give him a shot.
if he doesn’t (oh dear Lord, the suckage….), the he rides the pine again.

we have a stubborn manager/front office. :(

Obviously? Really?

Name one other team in the entirety of Major League Baseball that, as of this writing, has managed to win MORE games than THE CURRENT HALO LINEUP.

Go ahead. I’ll wait. It shouldn’t take long, since, like it’s so obvious and everything.

Cut the hyperbole. Settle down. There is a long road still ahead and EVERY team is having sports of success and spurts of fail. The Angels are no exception and they are doing as well as anybody, if not better. There is serious room for improvement, sure. And the schedules from here on out are less favorable for us than, say, the A’s. But to infer that the whole thing is a failure at this point is way over the top.

by Stirrups on Jun 29, 2008 10:39 PM PDT up reply actions

you act like the lineup is the cause of all of those wins

please… name a team with a record close to the Angels’ that has an offense as bad as the Angels.

this is beyond spurts of fail. this is half a season of fail. we have every reason to be worried about the performance, or lack thereof, of the Angels offense. i don’t know about you, but it seems like our players and our fans want more than another first round sweep. that’s not looking too promising with this present offense.

by howiestheman on Jun 29, 2008 10:43 PM PDT up reply actions

"Worrying" about it is one thing. I "worry" about this offense too.

And I really believe that this offense is very fragile, and easily shut down by a playoff-caliber team in a playoff situation. I do not know how it will be functioning come October.

But declaring that a 49 win team at this point in the season “obviously…isn’t working” is sheer bullshit. To call a team on track for 98 wins a “half a season of fail” is also bullshit.

I know full well that pitching is carrying this team. Sometimes hitting carries teams, sometimes pitching. It happens. It is ALL part of the lineup. It is a TEAM game. So far this year, it is heavily pitching, with just enough hitting to secure wins. Lots and lots of wins. Boatloads of wins.

You want to know where things are obviously not working? Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Cincy, Houston, and Colorado. They are all scoring more runs than the Halos, but are 17 games worse. Or Toronto, with a slightly better ERA than the Halos, and almost identical offense, but 9 games worse. THOSE are places that obviously need to repair their team. Not here. A half a season of fail? Seattle, Washington, San Diego, Colorado. THOSE are “fail”.

We have a hell of a lot better than that. It ain’t perfect, but it’s still a good thing.

by Stirrups on Jun 30, 2008 10:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I think most people realizes that we have it off better than most teams, and that we are not in dire situations,

but they are afraid of what could happen if the pitching starts to decline a little. If it does, the offense cannot handle it. They are not calling for complete overhauls, they are just trying to take positions of weakness (LF-GMJ/GA, C-Mathis) and turn them into a strength (willits/rivera and naps).

this offense has been sub-par all year........

so i dont know where the “spurts of fail” you are referring to are…......and to “ME” this offense is underperforming and if not for the arms….....this team would be around .500 and getting blasted by the media for being so mediocre

http://www.diehard101.com/phpfox/upload/norcaliangelsbillsfan

by norcaliangelsfan on Jun 30, 2008 1:02 AM PDT up reply actions

In the context of the larger season

teams will go through their ups and downs. Winning streaks/losing streaks, hot bats/cold bats, lights out pitching/Dustin Moseley. Comparing those of the Angels against every other team in baseball finds that the Angels’ are doing as well as anybody.

No team is so perfect that they are head and shoulders above the Halos. And every other contender would be in the same predicament if you took away one of their strengths too. No different.

Look. I know full well that this offense needs to improve. I ain’t stupid. My point is that the offense is just enough to get it done. For now. It IS working. It could be much better, but it IS WORKING. Check the standings. THAT is what is “obvious”.

by Stirrups on Jun 30, 2008 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah sorry that i look more at "trying" to win the whole thing........instead of "just being happy to get to the playoffs"

i should be grateful for another first round loss…...

by norcaliangelsfan on Jun 30, 2008 6:40 PM PDT up reply actions

No you got it right.

It’s the stats fools who only try to win the regular season, and then surrender to the playoffs because they cannot do any math.

My problem was only with your one post, where you declared that it was obvious that this lineup is not working. At the moment, this lineup is working. It is doing exactly what it needs to be doing right now, winning games. And it is doing that as well as any other team in baseball. So it is not so obvious that it is NOT working at the moment.

Now, if you had stated that it was “obvious that this team is winning a lot now, but this doesn’t look like a recipe for success in the playoffs”, you would have had zero argument out of me.

Cubs…......49…...........443

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Jun 30, 2008 9:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Then it's a good thing for us that MLB standings

are based on WINS, and not RUNS. Theoretically, it’s possible to have 49 wins with only 49 runs scored. Pittsburgh is scoring a crapload more runs than us, and that ain’t working out so well for them.

Again, this is not to say that our offensive production is great. It is that, to this point in time, it DID work well enough for the team to be among the highest acheivers in baseball. So, to say that it ‘obviously is not working’ is either worng, or your expectations are for something far closer to 81-0.

by Stirrups on Jun 30, 2008 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

11 million reasons

GMJr.’s salary.

Rivera is younger. Rivera hits for a better average. Rivera hits for more power. Rivera gets on base more often. He is a better offensive player in virtually every quantifiable aspect. And, GMJr. is on the down side of his career.

My guess is that if Rivera were really a malcontent, they would have traded him. There’s got to be another team out there intrigued by his talent, and willing to take a gamble on a guy earning only a couple of million bucks.

No, he doesn’t play b/c GMJr. has the big contract. I refuse to believe that Scioscia actually things that GMJr. is a better player. By every objective basis, he’s worse, and the gap between the two is widening.

by jjackflash on Jun 30, 2008 12:16 AM PDT up reply actions

A better way to put it:

Being “Pro-Rivera” is a small subset of the people who are “Anti-GMJ and G.A.” ... seeing as Rivera is one of the few options if these two wimps are sacked, it is not a grand stretch…

by Rev Halofan on Jun 29, 2008 9:32 PM PDT reply actions
