It's not in effect tonight, but...

...I have never understood the “bat a speedy guy 9th to have 2 leadoff hitters” strategy. I’m serious, I actually don’t understand how it makes sense. If someone could explain it to me using small words, I’d appreciate it.

The theory is

that you put a guy who’s fast but doesn’t walk enough to warrant being higher up in the lineup.

by cardinalwraith on Jun 30, 2008 7:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess I get it if...

..the idea is to just have 2 in a row, so hopefully one gets on for the RBI guys. But when there’s also a speedy slap hitter batting 2nd, suddenly you have 3 in a row and nobody to drive that 9th guy in if he gets on.

even though you were kidding. these are grown men getting paid millions. youre telling me vlad and torii hunter listen to mickey hatcher?

youre all unbelievable. everyone gives the hitters credit when theyre hot but then only blames coaches when theyre cold. its pathetic. it goes both ways. nobody complained about hatcher last year when our hitters were unstoppable for months.

by norcaliangelsfan on Jun 30, 2008 8:51 PM PDT up reply actions

ya, 2 playoff appearances and an ALCS over those 3 years. what a loser

this team operates on mike scoscias philosophy so a knock on hatcher is a knock on your manager. but go ahead, complain away. i guess its easy to be pissy when youve only followed the team since theyve been successful. or at least act like it.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Jun 30, 2008 8:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Dude.

I started following the Halos in 1965, when I heard they were coming to Anaheim.

If the offense sputters, it is the batting coach’s job on the line. Hatcher brought that point up himself just this very week. Hatcher’s job is to ensure that the hitters can execute on the manager’s philosophy and, if they fail, to correct their problems until they do. That’s baseball. Anything else is wishful thinking and denial.

Nobody can deny that the Halos would have done better in those three playoff appearances if their offense had not gone to sleep.

by Stirrups on Jun 30, 2008 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

P.S. Yes, they do.

These grown men are paid millions to be professional players, which means that they have to listen to their coaching staff. It happens so frequently that the only way to miss it is to follow baeball on the radio.
