Garland is more annoying than Weaver.

1. No hope of improvement, but every expectation of decline.
2. No out pitch.
3. Mediocre stuff and low-90’s-at-best velocity, lives on guile.

It's not in effect tonight, but...

...I have never understood the “bat a speedy guy 9th to have 2 leadoff hitters” strategy. I’m serious, I actually don’t understand how it makes sense. If someone could explain it to me using small words, I’d appreciate it.

by leftwing on Jun 30, 2008 7:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The theory is

that you put a guy who’s fast but doesn’t walk enough to warrant being higher up in the lineup.

by cardinalwraith on Jun 30, 2008 7:51 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess I get it if...

..the idea is to just have 2 in a row, so hopefully one gets on for the RBI guys. But when there’s also a speedy slap hitter batting 2nd, suddenly you have 3 in a row and nobody to drive that 9th guy in if he gets on.

Guess the whiners are all bandwagoners, as I recall the Angel squads prior to 2002 and would have crawled thru broken glass to catch a game we were behind by 2 early while up by 4.5 at the end of June.

No

The Angels’ best hope is that he has a decent enough year to where the Angels can get a first-round sandwich pick.

Why, when they can't produce them in the minors?

A lack of plate discipline is this team’s hallmark, top to bottom.

What kind of idiotic organization

tries to make its hitters do things they are not naturally good at? Kotchman is from our organization, he takes walks, NApoli too. To force people who are NOT plate discipline types to concentrate on the ONE THING that they do not do whiel they are in DEVELOPMENTAL ball … dude, that is idiocy.

I hadn't realized it

but that .339 OBP in 2008 is a pretty big step down from his .372 last year. Plus he’s not hitting for as much power as last year. Just hope it’s a half-season anomaly.

true, BUT....

Ducky’s right in the sense that plate discipline doesn’t seem to be a priority when coaching the kids.

In which case

why aren’t the Angels drafting players who are good at those things?

Except, not really

The Jeff Angus interviews showed their relative disinterest in if not contempt for ball four.
