Does this make K-Rod sound like a pompous jerk?
Arredondo is still being mentored by Rodriguez, the closer Arredondo calls "my little daddy."
Rodriguez, who made an even bigger splash as a 20-year-old phenom in 2002, is trying to make Arredondo feel comfortable.
"When I came up, no one took me under their wing, and it doesn't feel right," Rodriguez said. "So I try to do whatever I can to make him feel comfortable and have confidence in himself every time he goes out to the mound.
"He has great stuff, great velocity, a great split, but he's a human being. Eventually things aren't going to go the way you expect them, and that's when you have to be mentally prepared."

"When I came up, no one took me under their wing, and it doesn't feel right,"
I’m pretty sure that’s a lie, and even if it weren’t, why bother whining about it now?

Maybe, but...
that doesn’t make it pompous.

Sure it does.
It’s well known that Percival took KRod under his wing as his heir-apparent. Newspapers and the clubhouse would refer to Percy as KRod’s “mentor” and how much he was teaching the young phenom.
When KRod says stuff like this, he’s trying to say that no one helped him and he achieved his success all on his own. That is where he appears pompous.

I don't think it's so well known...
My memory of the situation is much how the Rev seems to remember it as well.
I actually thought he had some good things to say, but I knew when I read the article that this debate would ensue on these pages. It seems I have to defend this guy almost daily, especially to other Angel fans. I don’t get why he’s so polarizing, but I say sign him.

Percy took Shields and Donnelly under his wing
Frankie was not the favorite son of that bullpen, Donnelly started 2003 with an ERA below 1.00 (he went to the AllStar game – all the attention was on Donnelly and Frankie struggled – TO CALL PERCIVAL FRANKIE’S MENTOR has ZERO foundation in reality.

Well, at the very least he started mentoring him in the 2004 season though.
We know that to be true.

Fair enough to an extent
Percy took EVERYONE who would listen to him under his wing. If K-Rod chose not to listen that’s his fault. I agree that Percy did pay special attention to Donnelly in ‘03.

Not to me
I think we know next to nothing about the dynamics of the team in that regard. Scioscia does lead a very tight ship in that their grievances with each other don’t get aired pubicly that much at all.

Negatory
It makes him sound like he’s interested in helping Dondo succeed in the bigs long-term.
Please go away Justin Speier. Your work here is done. And take Quinlan's half-inch fielding radius with you.

It seems odd given what we've heard before about his relationship with Percy
but overall, no, it sounds like he’s trying to help Arredondo out.

My recollection may be hazy, but
didn’t Frankie resist Percy’s assistance when he came up?

You are right, and he certainly did resist Percy's help

Blah. I know what went on but I’m not going into it. Too much gossip for me on a fan board. Peace bro … let’s just say I’m not a Frankie fan.

you know what went on...
...but you’re not going into it…
because that would be…too much gossip for you on a fan board…
So you and Percy went out to dinner or something, he told you the whole story about how he tried so hard to be like a big brother to Frankie, but he just wouldn’t buy into his mentoring. So now, five years later, you still hold a grudge with Frank, because Percy told you he was pompous.
That about right?

Lost in translation?
Was Frankie fluent in English when he came up? Wonder if there was some language/cultural barrier and a lack of Spanish-speaking players in the ‘pen back in ‘02?
Nice to see that Frankie is extending this courtesy to someone who could take his job.

also it could have been a fact that...
young kids dont wanna take advice from anyone…....they think they know it all…...and maybe NOW frankie has learned from the experience.

I suspect this is probably accurate. I'm almost positive that in '03 and '04
Percy and K-Rod ended up hanging out quite a bit.

please....
no more artificial drama surrounding Frankie K. Rodriguez, he saves our asses nearly every time and whether he implied arrogance in an interview is errrrrelevant
***Me to fellow die-hard Ryan after the Angels scored their tenth run on an eighth inning Tommy Murphy home run (10+ runs = free hot wings):
Me: "What the hell are you doing, dude?"
Ryan: "I'm flapping my wings for hot wings!"
Me: "Sit the f*** down and stop acting like a drunk 15-year-old, you ain't Christopher Lloyd and we ain't sitting in the outfield"

Nickname
From the same article, we learn that Arredondo has, by his own admission, “big hands, monkey hands.” The Soth compares him to E.T.
There’s gotta be a nickname in there somewhere.

I would even say "bad-ass"
And let’s face it, that is a quality you want in your closer.
Plus, even if he was so arrogant he didn’t want Percy’s help, that is another part of what gives him the confidence to be as good as he is.
I have felt annoyed at Frankie in the past for the heart-stopping saves, but right now, he is simply the best! Enjoy it while we can.

The only thing is what others have said…Percy and others did supposedly take K-Rod under their wings, so to speak, so that part is surprising.

by halofolife on Jun 6, 2008 3:51 PM PDT 0 recs
He is that damn good.
Frankie is one of the best closers in the game. Let him say whatever he wants. I think he is 80% confident and 20% cocky. Who cares as long as he raises our blood pressures while getting all those saves.
by docescobar07 on Jun 6, 2008 10:48 PM PDT 0 recs
It maybe a stretch
But maybe he’s talking about coming up through the minor leagues…and through his first year in 2002. I’m sure Percy helped him out here and there, but it would be arrogant for you and I to think that somehow K-Rod owes his career [his success] to Percival [just because they co-existed in the same bullpen together] and now what K-Rod is saying is meant to throw Percival under the bus.
by BBFan1 on Jun 6, 2008 11:01 PM PDT 0 recs
Nothing pompous about his statements.
However, he has every right to be a pompous person: he’s the shit.
