The pen - Reboot?
So, I'm not feeling a lot of love for our tallest Angel currently. He of the 10.13 ERA - yes, him. It's not that I don't like him, I'm sure he's a very nice bloke, I just don't want him anywhere near a mound whilst wearing a red uniform.
So, assuming Bootcheck gets his just desserts sooner rather than later, how would you change things?
O'Day ?
Moseley ?
Bulger ?
Or are we holding on for the return of Myspace in a bull pen capacity?

For what it's worth...
...I wouldn’t mind having a look at Bulger at some stage:
1.15 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 15.2 innings, 25k

i bring up O'Day until he falters big time
the kid was pretty good, especially for a rookie.
if he struggles big-time, you can always send him down and call up Thompson/Bulger. we’v got options down in the minors, which makes it that much worse when management decides to stick by Boot

our tallest Angel currently ...
Jered Weaver 6’7”; Jon Garland 6’6”; Chris Pootycheck 6’5”
But, I think the Angels are hoping Kelvim can support the bullpen down the stretch…not in the dog days of summer. That’s more for Moseley or O’Day or Bootcheck. I am not sure how many more chances Chris is going to have, though.

We pick and choose...
Liquids are metric unless it’s beer (when it’s pints). It’s the government’s way of making those gallons of fuel sound less expensive by turning them into litres.
Weights are in stones (14 Ibs), unless you’re at the gym being weighed by the exercise nazis who want to make the number sound enormous, therefore kilos.
We like the Imperial system, it reminds us we were important once.
My problem is not the metric system, it’s that I can’t read or count.

Moseley
Bootcheck’s remaining value is his ability to pitch more than 2 innings. None of O’Day, Thompson or Bulger can do that; they’re all one-inning guys, basically.
Thus, Dustin Moseley, assuming his elbow is healthy now. He really wasn’t bad in relief last year. Even this year, he tended to be OK for about 3 innings.
by jjackflash on Jun 9, 2008 10:26 AM PDT 0 recs
yep -- long relief
...long-relief is boots/moseley’s job. As much as we should dump boots, we simply can’t until we bring another guy in to be the long-relief guy. That’ll be moseley wants he gets back in form in AAA.
Escobar/O’day/Bulger—all obviously better pitchers than Boot/Moseley….but none are long relief guys. Thus, we are stuck until the playoffs with either boots or moseley. In the playoffs, one of the starters will go to the pen as the long-relief guy. the rest of the playoff pen will be arredondo/speier/shields/frankie/escobar.

lies
in his last 10 games with the Angels, O’Day pitch 2 or more innings 5 times… thats right – half of those were for more than an inning.
im sure he could be stretched to 3 with very little trouble… they can do that in the minors and call him up ASAP.
if he can go 2, then 3 shouldn’t take too much time.
Myspace will obviously be in the relief role, so you’ve got to figure we could have a pen of (in the playoffs)
O’Day/ET/Speier/Shields/Frankie/Myspace.
that leaves 3 guys that can go more than 1 inning (2 that can theoretically stretch to 3+) and 3 guys that go 1+ inning.

Gotta be O'Day
And how's the Chili Davis this evening?
by HaloDutch on Jun 9, 2008 11:12 AM PDT 0 recs
In all seriousness
If Escobar comes back firing on all cylinders (which some news reports say he might) then the Angels brass are going to have a big decision to make regarding what to do with him. Escobar (believe it or not!) could be the answer to our preseason question about a 5th starter. If Myspacecobar is strong enough to be a starter, then I suppose that makes Garland or Weaver expendable. (I like dorothy more, but it’s something about the blue gingham dress v. the pageboy haircut that sells it for me).
OK, if Escobar comes back to the pen, he’s really not all that helpful. He replaces Bootcheck, I suppose. Arredondo, it seems (though we’ll have to see what Soth does) has taken Shields job as set-up man, which almost makes Speier redundant, which, by effect, almost makes Escobar as a reliever redundant.
When Escobar comes back, somebody’s gonna be a big loser. Who’s it gonna be Weaver (please) or Garland out of the rotation? Or Bootcheck out of the pen?
My answer to the original post is Darren O’Day. He’s a submariner and gives us a different look. What’s his face made a difference on those 2002-03 Angels teams with his awkward delivery.

Sorry for replying to myself
But big Ben Weber was the guy I was trying to thinking of with the weird motion. Sorry.

I think Soth is going to save Escy as his ace in the hole come play-off time.
They are going to give Escobar all the time in the world to come back and then some. This is what I’ve heard from following what Soth has said in the papers since the talk of him coming back. They are in absolutely no rush, it is a long time until the end of the season, and they are quelling any rumors of Escobar coming back soon as a starter. But I think Soth is holding a few cards with post-season strategy in mind.

if Garland continues to be solid
who leaves the rotation? WTY?
do we make a trade for a big bat?
i still the Myspace becomes a reliever… there’s no way (at this point) that Santana, Saunders or Lackey leaves the rotation. As long as Garland is solid, he’s there too, especially considering his postseason experiece.
With Escobar in the pen, there is no way that the pitching costs us a championship. the starts would literally have to go 5 innings and let the pen eat up the rest of the game.
Escobar/O’Day/Arredondo/Speier/Shields/KRod is one scary good pen.

You could have an injury to one of the starters over the course of the remainder of the season
and that would decide it for you who leaves the rotation. In the mean time, I see them using Escobar in relief on occasion out of the bullpen.
