Kelvim Escobar's Rehab @ Rancho Cucamunga
Kelvim Escobar in his first rehab start coming off of a shoulder injury.
Kelvim Escobar went three innings of one hit ball for the Quakes in his first rehab start coming off of shoulder problems and struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
After pitching 3 innings Kelvim signed a couple of autographs before heading down the tunnel. I yelled Esco, he looked up and waved.
and then, i got punched in the stomach by the Mascot. (yeah, for real) I got Punked by Tremor.
After Esco pitched 3 innings me my cousin (westminster25) and about 10 other folks waited about a hour for him to come out of the clubhouse. Like John Lackey they pulled the ol bait and switch. By the time we got hip, he was already being escorted to his ride. They wouldn't let anyone near him. Oh well, next time. So as i walked to my car i was chatting with one of the grounds crew. He was telling me how he got Esco to sign a ball and how he was a real cool guy. I asked what he drove up in, and he pointed to a Red Aspin? (I think it was an Aspin) about 20 feet from my car. As we began to walk in that direction they drove off. Oh well, next time.
So as we headed toward the freeway my cousin asked me to stop because he was hungry (as always). So i pull into Red Robbin and start looking for a parking spot, i have to stop for some pedestrians and Bigger than life it is Esco. I roll down the window and holler Esco, he walks up to my ride like he knew us and said "What's up guys"? My cousin asked him if he would sign his Red jersey he was wearing, he said sure. He got off the phone and told his friends he would be there in a minute. He stayed in the parking lot and signed autographs and took pictures. I could not believe how cool he was.
I tried to take his picture but it was 2 dark. He said don't worry and i quote "I'm a professional at this, lets go into the light". we moved into the light, but now my camera was trippin, taking blurry photos. After 3 tries i say it's all good and he insisted I try again. Still didn't work but, What a Guy! I mentioned i was going to post these photos on Halos Heaven and he said "Thats Cool" I also asked him how his arm felt and he repled, "Better!"
The End!

That is so cool...
in these days of prima donna millionaires, to have a player go out of his way to make a fan’s day is usually unheard of. Escobar might be my new favorite Angel now too.
BTW, I like the pictures.
I was uncool before uncool was cool.

Awesome
Great that Escobar behaves like that. For some reason I was expecting the opposite.

Escy in Rancho Cucamonga
I was there last night as well. I must have been by you as you were snapping your pics in the bullpen during warm up.
Escy looked great, his fast ball was crisp and had lots of movement and his changeup (prob his best pitch) looked awesome. I got the luxury of watching his pregame warm ups in the pen, I was about 15 feet directly behind him watching every pitch. Although he looked good, I noticed a few grimmaces on his face when he really let the ball go. There was a few times after he delvered the pitch that he turned and walked back to the mound with an uncormfotable look on his face. I read today that he was having some problems getting loose in the pen. I assume that was what the grimmace was from, and hopefully nothing more. We also sat three rows behind home plate and although he was a man amoung boys at Class A no one came close to making good contact of him. The one hit was a lazy grounder between first and second.
Beyond his outing, Escy is a class act. He had a brief conversation with me and my son after he completed his warm ups and after his outing stayed at the end of the dugout for about 5 minutes signing autographs for the fans.
After Escy left the bullpen we hung out there and spoke with Bootcheck, he was scheduled to throw the 8th and 9th inning. He came over and we had a 3 minute conversation. He kept on saying that is was such a wierd season this year missing all of Spring and trying to play catch up and get back up with the bog boys. We stayed and watched him pitch and although he struck out 4 in the game and looked great in the 8th, he got beat around in the 9th and gave up 3 or 4 runs
All in all I was glad I made the trip to see the boys and Escy out in RC, we had a great time and enjoyed the up close and personal atmosphere single A baseball provides the fan. My 6 year old son left the game with 5 balls and a bunch of autographs. The two most notable auto’s were Peter Bourjous and PJ Phillips (whom both were great guys).
If you get around to it, take the trip to RC and check out the quakes. You will be happy you did. It is even better if you can catch an Angel while rehabbing…
Could be work, could be baseball...but I got Spring Fever!!!!!

Sounds like our Bootcheck, giving up three or four runs in a A-game rehab assignment!

I yelled at Justin Speier last night on his trot to the mound...
“Go get ‘em BOOTCHECK!”
He didn’t look at me, but continued toward the mound. Not a great outing, but not a bad outing for “Just Perspire.” I am sure I gave him some motivation.

damn it
i just read the updated story about escy and his shoulder…what a fricking bummer…i wish there was no grimmace or he and the pitching coah Rinchal would have shut him down…
I watched him tell the coach in spanish that his shoulder was bothering him, but that he thought he would be OK….I am sure Butch is going to give that coach a nice talking to….” take better care of my pitchers when they come through Single A on a rehab….
all in all this blows and I wish Escy a quick recovery
Could be work, could be baseball...but I got Spring Fever!!!!!

That's a great tale
Nice to hear Escobar is so cool. First a Subway sighting and now this. The Esco-stalkers are out in full force!
You forgot to mention whether you punched Tremor back or not. You should have knocked his ass out! :)

No Oakland catch phrases, please.
Scioscia Says: "There are some hitters that need to start to see more pitches and work some counts, but there are guys that are more productive seeing that fastball and squaring it up. There are different solutions to each hitter and that's what you're working for. There's no pill you give to the whole team and have them all of sudden get into your offense."

Interesting comment about him grimacing during warmups...
you saw what was mentioned here in the Register:
Escobar admitted that he had a hard time getting loose for his start at Rancho Cucamonga but didn’t think it was anything serious at the time.

from the sounds of it...
..seems like season-ending surgery is a very real possibility. The only hint of optimism is that he still had really good stuff, which means the shoulder can’t be that bad, right?
Let’s hope that this is something minor, because it is an understatement saying that Kelvim will be a HUGE asset in the final months of the season & the playoffs. They’ll be careful with him, so I wouldn’t expect him to rejoin the team until at least August, even if his shoulder is 100% from here on out.

Very cool post.
Good pics, nice story. It’s funny because I was across the parking lot at Buffalo Wildwing’s when you snapped that shot of Esco by the Red Robin. Glad I didn’t run into him in my “condition”. Might have been embarrassing… for all of us.
