Huff & Puffing for a Trade????
If there was any trade to be made how about exploring a trade for Aubrey Huff? He has always hit LHP/RHP well with power. I don't think you would have to give up anything of major proportions in order to acquire Huff. Huff is currently under contract through the 09 season paying him 8 mill a season
He is a left handed power bat that has hit for avg during his 8+ years in the BIGS. The Angels could seriously use some sort of help from the left side. He has played 94 of the Orioles 97 games this year mostly as a DH for the Orioles, but he has the ability to play 3rd (13 gms.) and 1B as well. Not saying there is a need for a 1B just saying he can play there. Heck of a lot better then the "Q".
So what does "HH" think about this trade, and what would you be willing to give in order to get?
Maybe Sean Rodriguez after all the Orioles are hurting in the middle INF spots, and Rodriguez is going to be odd man out in the Angels big league infield. Include Reggie Willits and a pitcher like Moseley/Bootcheck/Minor Leaguer.
Remember Figgy can go to being that All Star Utility guy moving him from 3rd to the OF should you want to play Huff at 3B a few times a week.
Figgy 3B
Kotch 1B
Vlad RF
Huff DH
Hunter CF
Anderson LF
Kendrick 2B
Catchers Spot
Izzy SS

Huff isn't actually mediocre this year.
If we needed someone, he’d probably be a smarter pick than Bay or Holliday, just because the cost is lower. The problem is, we don’t need anyone.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Huff's career numbers are an ~.820 OPS.
Juice’s career numbers were .750-ish, and he’d had one good season. Huff has had several good seasons.
~Till the Halo burns out...
OPS .795
Garrett Anderson’s career OPS #.795
So your calling him less then mediocre I guess?
What would the team be giving up or would have to give up in order to acquire someone like Huff was the question.
Nothing was ever said about how he would play OF for the Angels. I think we all agree that GMJ is a lost signing. I like Juan Rivera as well but lets be honest Huff would give depth to the team and allow Juan to be a guy that gives day offs to the guys as well.
I used Rodriguez and Willits and a pitcher not in the rotation or for that matter on the big league roster at this time. Knowing this is for the season and next they would not be able to hold the team hostage like all other teams do when trades are talked about.
I am not willing to trade any current player that plays an everyday role with the team, but in order to get something there would have to be something given what is it that the team is willing to give to get?

The lineup featured in the first post has Huff at DH at the expense of Rivera.
I think Rivera would outperform Huff in that Huff appears to be playing over his head compared to the last few years. And I think Rivera’s 2006 production is what he’d do if given the chance. At the very least we should give him an opportunity to prove it.
Calling GA mediocre based on his career OPS is .795 is probably not fair. And it’s not what I did. I’d rather look at different periods of GA’s career to make that judgement. There was a period of time where GA was outstanding. That period of time is not now, however. And yes, I would say he is less than mediocre today, but not for his whole career.
Fair Enough
Just think that the team needs a left hand hitter with some pop. Huff has done that through the years. He is also a guy that has played a majority of his time in the AL East with success.
Huff has had up to now a solid career and would be an added addition with out much subtraction. As I said I like JR as well, but not fair to say that Huff has played over his head when he has a lifetime AVG of .280 and once again he is hitting .280+. Hard to play over your head for 8+ years. Maybe a week or month, but you can’t play above your skills that long.
Love to find a way to have both of them in the lineup to be honest. No need for GMJ to take another AB, and as sad as it may be it is time for another Halo to hang'em up. GA is not the same GA. The true problem is there was no need to go out and sign another OF bat with all the OF bats already in place. I think Huff can still play some 3rd and fill out the DH role. Just like to see GMJ go on the 60 day DL with that troubled knee.

Play OF?
Who said anything about him playing the OF? Hard to call him mediocre as well.

Rivera
He would still be getting time in the OF and DH role as GMJ sits on bench and Reggie Willits is no longer an Angel with the trade. Just looking for some LHH pop

Rivera needs full time to be effective.
Besides which, Rivera actually hits righties better over his career anyway. If we’re desperate for lefty pop off the bench, we can call up Morales.

we're going to trade for Matt Holiday
....but it’ll be this offseason. If not MH, then it’ll be Bay. But i am more confident than ever a big trade is coming this offseason.
We won’t make any trade during this season—unless a C is out for a LT.
Go Angels!

So's Norm van Brocklin...
is he making plans to come back again and again?
Also, Magic came back to hoops about 30 times. It got very old after a while.
Michael Jordan also comes to mind as someone who didn’t leave well enough alone. Washington Wizards? Huh?

Touche
But Magic and Michael came back after it clearly was beyond their productive years…
Brett had a great year last year. Call it a fluke if you want, but with Aaron Rodgers waiting in the wings, I think the Pack can afford to let Brett start a couple games.
i'm done with this topic already...
I see it on TV every day….
enough already yet again.

Aren't the Angel catchers batting near the Mendoza line?
Why not improve a spot that really needs it? We have enough OF’s, the IF is solid.
Why not a short-term Bengie Molina deal—he’s only going to be playing at the present (good output) level for the next year/year and a half. That’s all we’d need to get Mathis/Napoli more time to work on their hitting.
Further, Molina surely has a higher thrown-out baserunner percentage than the present duo.
My proposal is short term, guys and girls. Not a long-term solution. Don’t tell me how slow Bengie is, I know that already. He can flat-out hit and can play solid D.
blame platoons
or the fact that Mathis can’t hit.
if Naps got all the playing time, you’d probably see his average around .250

If his shoulder were healthy, I'd agree.
But it wasn’t and Napoli didn’t hit anything during the second half of may. However, if/when Naps comes back healthy, I’d say give him the starting slot.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Classic slugger
Yes. Naps could be a classic .250 with 30 homers guy. He’s a legitimate threat. I don’t think pitchers are scared of Mathis. I KNOW base runners aren’t.

barinng any more injuries qnd if he could get steady playing time, there’s no reason to believe he couldn’t reach 25-30 HRs this year

With that thought Anderson option is not picked up. No chance the Angels are going to have an outfield for 2009 that cost $65-70 mil
Anderson $14m
Hunter $17.5m
GMJ $10m
Vlad $15m

I too will be sad
It broke my heart to see Percy, Eckstein, Kennedy, and Ersty go, (and Alex Ochoa, j/k) and see them on other teams, but business is business. I am slowly coming around to the let-Garrett-go camp. Actually it’s the let-Garrett-go/resign-Rivera camp. I truly hope Garrett has a late-career resurgence and hits 3,000 hits, but it doesn’t have to be with the Angels.

I agree too Zu, and it's sad
I’ll miss GA. I won’t miss all those soft groundouts to 2B but I’ll miss GA turning on that fastball and hitting ropes and just being cool. Am I just a softie but am I the only one who thinks that if GA is non-tendered he might just retire rather than play for another team?

He's always had the attitude of
I’ll play until it’s no fun anymore, then I’ll retire. So, he might not want to play for anyone else, and go through the hassle of adjusting to new management and teammates. But I’ve always secretly hoped he’d acrew the numbers to get to the hall. I don’t know if he’s quite there yet, but I’m no expert.

O U T F I E L D E R S
And when Vlad’s knees go he will play where? Oh, we got Huff at DH blocking Kendry and Vlad… uh… long term roster compilation the Aubreymeister is not a great fit for us.
Huff
He would not be such a long term option. He is signed through 2009 season at $8m. Proven hitter at the big league level! He has not played the OF since 2006 seeing most of his time at DH/ 3rd and some 1B. Solid numbers career wise and again this year in the AL East.
Hate to think of Vlad being bad knee DH guy. Bad knees don’t amount to a lot of success in the game anyways. Kendry Morales just came off the DL at Triple A and isn’t a fix for the teams struggling offense at this time. Huff is your new and improved Brad Fullmer Rev

Struggling offense, huh?
Averaging nearly 6 RPG in July, just barely second in the AL.
~Till the Halo burns out...
Eh.
The two months we’ve had most of our lineup healthy, April and July, we’ve been up near the top of the AL in runs scored. It’s only when important pieces got replaced by the production of Brandon Wood + S-Rod + GMJ trying to play through his increasingly bad knee + GA trying to do the same thing + Napoli playing through shoulder pain + major Vlad slump that we dropped to the bottom of the pile. There’s been some poor vs good luck thrown in there as well but that’s the size of it.

When I read potential trade headlines, especially for the "Big Bat"
I imagine other similar, possible headlines we would like to see:
“Water replaces gasoline as favored fuel for automobiles at $0.49 per gallon;”
“Increased consumption of amber to dark ale increases cognitive function and liver longevity;” and
“Third Party candidate wins US Presidential Election.”
These things would be wonderful, but are acutely impossible in the year 2008.

First and last time I get political on this site
A politician is a politician is a politician. I was going to attempt to go on a prolific rant, but I’ll keep it to a minimum. Much like the Yankees and Red Sox, the two predominant political parties are merely two heads of the same monster. Whether it be termed “red vs. blue” or “liberal vs. conservative,” it is still the same shit, different hue, same source. What might an objectively positive outcome be? A collective alliance rises up and unpredictably brings the power structure down (read: LA of A Angels; and, Lando Calrissian blowing up the second coming of the Death Star, who happened to be forwarned of an impending trap by the always-trusted Admiral Ackbar).
So what, exactly am I saying?
-Neither political party is doing anything, especially in concert, to help Americans;
-Hydrogen and natural gas-powered cars are already prominent in developing Asian countries, regardless of controlling Congressional power, and won’t see light of day in US in the next 5 years, minimum;
—The Halos need to find the proverbial “Lando” to destroy the “Death Star” that is the powers that be, particularly come post season.
I said I’d keep this short. I lied. Good night, all.

And I plead to not get banned for being "political"
I am mildly inebriated, fairly apolitical and hardly serious, except for the allegory of Lando Calrissian.
by Big Easy Halofan on Jul 21, 2008 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I gotta get my DVD out.
I swear you guys are all wrong about Ackbar and Lando. As I recall it, it is Lando who notices that the Star Destroyers are not engaging. Lando who guesses (correctly) that there is a working shiled around the unfinished Death Star. And Lando who calls out first for everybody to pull out of their attack. The very next shot is of Ackbar calling “It’s a trap!” Ackbar is merely catching up with what Lando has already figured out and acted upon.
Francisco Rodriguez: 188 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.
and then Ackbar's ship explodes.
Seattle I would like to thank you for sucking. It allows me to get back to my roots: Hating Fremont.

how about Casey Blake? Free agent after this season, wouldn’t cost much, probably something along the lines of what Milwaukee gave up for Ray Durham…a couple low grade prospects.
