Why is it
that I always feel bad that pitchers with high ERAs perform poorly?
Not that they ever do it against the ANgels, who bring out the Cy Young in the worst of them.
Damn we're good

by highlandhalo on Jul 26, 2008 5:35 PM PDT up reply actions
least liked? I'd wager half the people in this country dont even know the angels exist...
... at least if they watch espn
And yet, our attendence is top-ten, and has been every years since 03...
~Till the Halo burns out...
Sure has
But that’s completely irrelevant to the conversation at hand.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions
It's totally relevent
“the least-liked team in the US” was based on a survey of like 2000 people. I think the attendance numbers, which are millions strong, represents a larger, more significant sample size.
~Till the Halo burns out...
The attendance...at HOME
does not pertain to the standing in the US at large.
Note here that the Angels are the 27th best in terms of road-game attendance. That would obviously imply that opposing team’s fans are cramming into stadiums to see the Halos play.
Also, it means we have shitty intra-divisional rivals with terrible fanbases.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 5:48 PM PDT up reply actions
It's also a sign that we haven't played the Yankees.
But yeah, the epicly low attendance of the A’s doesn’t help. Still, the least popular team? I doubt it. We’re no Red Sox nation, but there are Angels fans in a lot of places.
~Till the Halo burns out...
THe evidence points to other conclusions
I’d venture to say at the very least, the Angels are in the lowest 5 teams in baseball in terms of likability outside of locale.
Sure, there’re transplants, but when compared to the Dodgers, the RSN, the Yankos, the Giants, the Cubbies, and even lesser teams like the Bravos, Phillies, etc, the Angels just don’t have a national fanbase to compare.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions
Sure compared to the big ones from the East Coast.
But what about the Rangers, Seattle, the Royals, Tampa Bay, Astros, Brewers, D-Backs, Rockies, Marlins etc? That’s 9 off the top of my head that I’m pretty sure we are at least even with.
~Till the Halo burns out...
All of whom have large spreads of land to
reach out and grab fans.
The South shares fans between teams like sharing sorority girls at a frat party.
The ‘Stros have as good. if not better, of a fanbase as the Rangers, mostly due to their proximity to more densely populated areas of Texas; plus, they’re closer to the NL Central teams they face than the inexplicable AL West Texas Rangers.
Brewers have all of Wisconsin and split some of the midwest, but are down there. And expansion teams aside, they pull in decent fan bases simply because there is no one else to root for.
Plus, if you’re not from California and still into SoCal sports for some reason, you’re much more likely to root for an “old roots” team like the A’s, Giants or Dodgers.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions
The South shares fans... What does that have to do with the Marlins and Rays, who don't have any?
They’re all Yankees fans down there. The Astros being equal to the Rangers means little, since I’m pretty confident we stomp all over the Rangers nationally.
Also, what about the Pads, or the Nats? That makes 11.
~Till the Halo burns out...
How are you "proving" anything?
Almost all of those teams have better national showings than the Angels.
I said I would postulate the Angels are in the bottom 5 of national fanbases, and yet you continue to patronize me. This isn’t even worth conversing due to your completely unprovoked hostility.
I simply posited my thoughts supported by evidential claims. You have done little more than try to name teams who don’t do well and assume the franchises have more fans than the Angels.
I’m done with this conversation until you can discuss it rationally or at least support a fanciful claim you make.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions
What hostility?
All I did was challenge the survey by pointing out that we have better attendance than most of the other teams which “beat” us in the survey of 2000 nation-wide baseball fans.
I made no personal attacks, I cast no aspersions, I didn’t really even intend much of an argument. I just made a comment in response to your post about the survey, which you challenged the relevancy of, and which led to this debate.
My personal experience, which consists almost exclusively of going to away games and games in the midwest especially, leads me to believe that the Angels are not bottom 5 in national fanbase.
I’m not sue why my confidence in the pervasiveness of the Angel fanbase is so offensive, but I apologize for whatever insult I offered.
~Till the Halo burns out...
I'm pretty sure we still have more fans than the Rays and Marlins.
*Visiting Angels fan* Never give up, never surrender!
Well, Marlins fans
are mostly NY relocating, whiny fans who refuse to go to a stadium made for football with showers interrupting every game.
TB has equally as terrible a stadium, but for the opposite reasons, and in a locale that is also highly football oriented.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 5:57 PM PDT up reply actions
Yes... which you still haven't acquiesced....
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions
Well, you were talking about the reasons their fans don't come to games.
Not why they supposedly have more fans nationally than we do.
~Till the Halo burns out...
That was to show that there're more Marlins/TB fans than their attendance numbers indicate
And served little purpose else.
The Marlins have lots of fans in GA, VA, and NY, for instance.
by shiftyeyedgoat on Jul 26, 2008 6:12 PM PDT up reply actions
I lived in Mountgomery county Maryland from 2000-2004
We made any number of excursions into VA and GA, and I did not see any Marlins fans, even after they won the WS a second time. Angels fans attendance at the Yards increased markedly after our WS, and again after we got Vlad in 2004.

This is all part of the game ...
needing to keep the game close so Krod can get yet another, dramatic, save.

Now Camden Yards PA system is blaring "YMCA"
Is that good or bad for the Angels? Or is it Jason Giambi’s new theme song?
Ain't no stoppin' us now. We got the groove!
Wow, Sosh ain't messin' around today
looks like a Hondo, Shields, Frankie day
Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
That's anal about Luke Scott's journal
But I like that approach. We should get that guy.

Hondo's pic on Gamecast ...
makes him look 12 years old. As if it is from his little league days.

You never know how old these Dominican guys are :)

I don't actually care ...
luckily this isn’t little league (with age restrictions). So, as long as he didn’t lie on his immigration forms, he can be 6 or 56, as long as he can pitch.
Boy can he pitch.
by matthiasstephan on Jul 26, 2008 6:05 PM PDT up reply actions
He sure can pitch!
I love him

like someone said before, stupid ump and his lazy, quiet strike calls
Especially strike 3 calls, you gotta sell it man
Hooters anyone?
by Chone's Chonies on Jul 26, 2008 6:04 PM PDT up reply actions
There's an ump who looks like he is punching out somebody with a vicious upper cut
when he makes his strike 3 call.

Since July started we've scored nearly 6 runs a game.
Why are you still whining about the offense?
