Kotchman for Teixeira DONE
Angels first baseman Casey Kotchman was pulled off the field during pregame warmups this afternoon at Fenway Park. And there are strong indications he is about to be traded to the Braves for Mark Teixeira, according to a source with knowledge of those discussions. Details are still being finalized, and additional, lesser names are expected to be involved. But Kotchman for Teixeira is the core of this deal.
The latest: A second source with knowledge of these discussions says the Braves will get Kotchman, plus a second lesser name, for Teixeira in a 2-for-1 deal.
MLB.com's Lyle Spencer says the second player is pitching prospect Stephen Marek.

I boo this big time in my book.
SportsCenter just said it is a done deal. They've been traded for each other.

Wow
If this is just a 3 month rental I don’t like it but If they can sign him, that would be a huge pickup. I like Kotchman a lot, but this is a big time power hitter we are talking about, someone who has proven himself in the AL no less. Let’s see how it plays out.

however, it’s hard for me to believe that a front office historically so reticent to trade would proceed without receiving some sort of assurance that he’d sign…

This is what we have to ask ourselves. Is being the front runner for the series worth morgaging our future? Now we are in big trouble next year. We will have lost Tex, Kotch, AND K-Rod. And what if we dont win the series this year?? Then this is an epic fail!!

TERRIBLE TRADE!!!
There is virtually no way that we will be able to compete with the Yankees for Tex long term. We will lose him to FA and have a sub-par Morales playing 1B for us next year! Very short sighted of Reagans to do this. Kotch was having a career year!

career year?
If this is Kotch’s career year then this is a slam dunk for the Angels. Kotch will probably have better seasons, but Morales is a major league ready player if we don’t sign Teixeira long term, which hopefully we will. Got to say that this is quite a gutsy move. I like it.
by Rycat512 on Jul 29, 2008 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
See my thread about Kotchman...
he was having a down year, actually. I think he is a better player than he has shown this year, but still he was having anything but a career year.
I am interested to see him regain him walk rate, and start to rake in the NL. That will be fun to watch. I wish ATL was still on the Superstation every day – that would have been cool.

Good Deal
I really like Kotchman. He’s a good hitter and a fine first baseman.
But even the most positive projections don’t indicate that he’ll ever have Teixiera’s power. Teix is also a fine 1B, so there should be no real dropoff from that perspective. Yeah, Casey’s got Angels blood in his veins (see Kotchman, Tom), but this makes the team – our team – better, and more likely to win a World Series.
Forget about the money. It’s Arte’s money, and he can spend it how he wants. Teix is not over the hill by any means (age 28 this year), and resigning him would not be a bad move.
Marek is perfectly expendable.
This is a good deal, people.

And Arte is very good at backroom deals. I would have faith in the fact that Tex is going to be with us a few years. Wow, the trade kinda blew my doors off but ffs we got Mark Texeiera for Kotch and a nothing reliever. Good deal.

Decent Deal
While I agree this isn’t a great trade since Kotch was probably one of my favorite Halo’s, even if we don’t resign Tex, the 2 draft picks are solid (probably better than Marek) and Kendry has been raking so having him there isn’t that bad, especially if this puts us into the WS this year.
by HaloFanInDC on Jul 29, 2008 3:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes
Marek is a fringe-y prospect, at best. The two compensatory picks should be better than Marek. So, if it means they have to play Morales (a guy to whom they’ve already paid a few million bucks), that’s OK, too.
by jjackflash on Jul 29, 2008 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
100% Agreed
I like the trade on the surface. We are one of a few teams that have the abilityto resign Tex and he provides a power upgrade over Kotch for this year. WS or bust – and I have no problem with that seeings how we gave up no SP and we have Kendry in wings + 2 early draft picks if we can’t resign him.

if Teix leaves for NY next year, Kendry Morales steps in and probably provides just as much power at 1B as Kotchman would, so it’s not like they’d be up the creek.

I agree. This is not good for just this season, although we have a heck of a chance to take this all the way this year. If we have him even one more year, this looks like quite a good deal.
Also, Kotch’s value shot up, as it is only one minor leaguer, and not too high of a prospect (if I understand correctly) for Tex. That means something.
by matthiasstephan on Jul 29, 2008 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i am numb
a) we made a trade at the deadline
b) we lost a grea teammate in Kotch

Settle down everybody!
When I heard about this trade, I knew the Bad Boy would be needed to calm you all down once more.
I never liked Kotchman as much as many here did. He seemed to do too many things that our hitters already did well. I love the power that Tex brings to this team. Arguably it’s been missing since the 2002 squad. Defensively, I prefer Kotch, but Tex is no slouch.
If Tex returns to the .280/40hr/120 rbi club, we have just gotten a steal. As for the whole issue of re-signing the guy, I think this is where the class that is LAA really will shine. Players like playing here, the ownership is set on winning, the women are easy (and cute), and the weather is perfect. Of course, I’m up in Nor-Cal, but that’s a story for another day. Oh and depending on how they perfrom the rest of the way, I’d prefer re-siging Tex and declining the option on Vlad.
PLUS, how cool will it be to watch Tex fuck his old team?
Bottom line is that we are easily the front runners to win the WS as it stands right now.

Boras BS
Listen Boras was and is Weaver’s agent. It did not stop them from drafting Weaver even though the demands were so high. The Angels did not get Weaver in the 2004 draft at 12th because he was the 22nd best player that year. Arte will not shy away from a guy because of the agent. If it fits he gets it. Thats how he works. He is also a sound business man as well.
Tex has a chance to win and do it in a big market as well. I am sure he will get a big contract, and I hope it is with the Angels. Kid can hit and with power.

What about Holliday?
He has never went free agent. Not so sure what the Holliday reference was about. A Rod, Kenny Rodgers and Sheffield (did not go into FA pool and also fired the scum sucking leech)seemed to do all right after they got rid of him.
He had no say in becoming a Ranger, but he had a say in not staying with them. There is something to playing for a winning team. I like the deal and will like it more if they can sign him.
What is Weaver then? Non relevant isn’t exactly what I would call someone that is a SP on the team with the best record in baseball, and a winning % of .660 (33W-17L)

Clear
He didn’t sign because he was tired of the long hot summers in Texas along with the change in managers and GM’s not to mention the losing. The Braves are showing they are in a rebuild faze and I am sure the Angels will be a player in the Tex sweepstakes.
No comment on the ARod situation or Kenny Rodgers firing Boras and Sheffield? None of those players went on the market when they had Boras. In fact they fired him instead.
Most players will go out, and let the market be set by the bidders. Smart move by the player at times, but why leave if you like the team and the winning. I challenge you to name a player the Angels stayed away from in FA because of Boras.

I never said they were scared of Boras or avoided him.
I just said Tex not signing in Texas has nothing to do with geography. Plain and simple.
Sheffield was a FA when he went to the Yankees. He signed a 3 yr 38 mil deal. He rebuffed LA and ATL in extension talks.
Rogers fired Boras and signed a 1 year deal. Whats your point?
A Rod rebuffed all of SEA’s attempts to sign an extension and went to FA. What is your point?

Point
Who cares about the agent. Moreno sure won’t. If the team thinks it can afford him they will get something done. This is that power bat in the middle of the line up. Only a few clubs can afford to sign him. The Angels are one of those teams. They now have a better shot of doing it then they did before.
Sheffield fired Boras in 2004 and went were he wanted to play NY. He did his own deal then. Rodgers did the same with firing his agent and chose to play were he wanted instead of dragging out the FA process. Point is the agent isn’t the final say. It is the players choice.

In the end, I may be cool with this...
Kotch and Marek is not a lot for Teixeira. Kotchman is a good player, but Teixeira is a stud. I get that.
But, right now I don’t like it. Casey was home-grown, young, cheap, GREAT with the glove. I was emotionally invested in Kotchman.
With Boras as the agent, Teixeira won’t sign before becoming a free agent – and this will be a HUGE contract…
2008 just got a little more interesting – 2009 is a different story.

What teams really have the cash to sign Tex outside of the yankees? Doesn’t seem like Boston would, and the Met’s still have Delgado. With the recent contracts, there’s no way that Tex gets close to the 200 Million that’s been thrown around.

Adios Kotch! I wish you well in the NL.
I lament the loss, but I would feel the same about the majority of this team. Sometimes you have to pay a price to upgrade the team as a whole. Honestly, this is the CHEAPEST upgrade I have heard about over the past 3 seasons. So, yeah, it is bittersweet, but it is still sweet.
Worse case scenario: Tex does not resign and Morales takes over 1B. The net loss is the delta between Kotch and Morales, in exchange for a serious run at another ring this decade. Yeah, I would do that.

Will this finally end the platoon w/ Quinlan?
I don’t know how I feel about this because I really liked Kotch, even though he may have been regressing in his OBP skills. And Tex is very good. He’s potentially just a rental who improves the team this year and then leaves. But we’d get draft picks if he did leave. And if he re-signs, we’d have some of that power we’ve been missing.
This is all too much for me to compute. My only question is Sosh still going to be dumb enough to play Quinlan against lefties?
Note: Sarcasm.

You were speaking / commenting to the post saying “they did better than the 2 draft picks they would have got” how does “A lot worse than what they gave up for Tex last year and the two picks are tough to say” equal my post?
Aren’t you saying we gave up a lot less in players then Atlanta did? Aren’t you trying to point out that there is no way to tell what they gave up in draft picks since that is at least 3-5 yrs away from those players they would get in compensation during the 2009 draft. I mean those players would be lucky to be in the bigs by 2112.My comment is in reference to how Atlanta had to make all the moves to get what basically ends up being Kotch.

I recall being pretty sure Atlanta had gotten hosed at the time as well.
And in any case, what they thought was going to happen doesn’t change what did happen. Much like us this year, they rolled the dice with that trade. In their case, it came up snake eyes. They gave up a LOT of talent. Neftali Feliz by himself will probably be a top-10, even top-5 pitching prospect this year. It may not have been a bad idea at the time (just like letting Glaus go for D-Mac) but they still appear to have lost big on this one.

They crapped out as said once already. You can take that into account. You can also take into account that the above names mentioned that Atlanta let go are all players that the Rangers still look at as prospects. Atlanta doesn’t have what they traded those prospects for, and now have Kotch. Thats a fact. No matter when or why they did it ….........it is what it is

We just traded JT Snow Jr for a stud.
You have to realize, this may be our year to compete for the world series. Think of all the talent that is going to be a free agent after this season (frankie, lackey, chone, juan), our team could look very different next season. We needed to do something to seriously compete this year. I applaud management for taking that risk.
And even if Tex walks, we still get to high drafts picks. Which is a bonus.
My only worries is what this does to our chemistry, Im not sure how much of a clubhouse guy Kotch was, but it will be interesting to see how this affects how we’ve currently been playing.

Don’t forget Jason Bulger, and his 0.50 ERA at SLC, along with about a billion strikeouts. No room for Marek in this organization; he’d eventually become another minor league free agent, so he was pretty expendable.

But...
this is his first year as a reliever. He has 57 K’s in 46 innings (that is good) and 21 walks (a little high). he has only given up 2 HR’s and seems to be thriving as a reliever. A 3.66 ERA is solid in the Texas League. I said upthread that Marek was a non-entity. After looking at the numbers, he isn’t a non-entity. He has upside and could maybe be a major-league reliever next year.
Here is a linkey to his MILB stats.

"Eyebrows", an Angels fan on Lookout Landing, is not happy about this
Here’s my reply:
What's with all the worries, Eyebrows ?
I’m not sure I follow you. The Angels FO is basically saying; Let’s make 2008 our year. We understand we got the division (no offense, A’s, M’s and Ranger fans), but let’s NOT get beat in the first round ALDS this post season.
I am stoked – and I love Kotchman! But Teixeira is awesome in his own way. More awesome than Kotch.
I’m not concerned about the big contracts for GMJ, Hunter and possibly Teixeira – as a matter of fact I hope he resigns with the Angels.
A lot of baseball fans are going to be ticked off right now, as the best team in baseball just got even better. They FINALLY added the power bat they’ve been talking about for years now. Much like the earthquake today, we were long overdue for this.

You're right
It is a tremendous move for you guys. Your bats are heating up and putting Tex into the mix is like adding lighter fluid to that fire. With the hitting and batting you guys have, Reagins was right to bring Tex in.
The best GMs know you have to build up your reserves (like our guys) or go all in for the whole pot (like yours). Kotchman was good for you guys, but Tex might just put you guys over the top. If Tex does that for you, then it was the right move as it was the right move for the Brewers and CC.
BTW, no offense taken.

He basically said there were other very good players in the Texas clubhouse who wanted to play for the Angels.
I do not by the East Coast Teixeira BS. It is all about the $.

I feel a strange combination of excitement and a deep sadness/apprehension...
...Mark Teixeira is going to be an awesome pickup for 2008. He will make us very tough to beat.
Nevertheless, if we neither win it all nor resign him, I suspect that there will be an awful lot of bitching about this deal on these boards for years to come. Kotchman was developing into my favourite Angel – the right mixture of skills, the right attitude and some quirkiness.
Sometimes though, you just need to take throw the dice. You’ve got to be in it to win it…
Best of luck Casey. Tex, welcome to the party…

The LL thread is funny
Trying to quantify everything, and mentioning how it doesn’t make sense, it costs money and players, etc, etc…
I don’t worry or care about any of that. Is Teixeira an upgrade over Kotch ? Yes he is, and everybody agrees. Then why worry about the rest for now ?
Let’s go Angels 2008!

When you are 25 games out already with nearly 60 left to play, you lose nearly all credibility for being able to define what is, and what is not, valuable and meaningful about baseball.

I am not super exicited about this trade, actually i am rather bumed
it is a total rental.
we were going to make the playoffs with either kotch or Tex
so basically we are renting tex for the playoffs.
if we don’t win the world series or at least go to the world series i think this trade will have been a failure.
i will suspend my final judgment until then
by UCIHalo on Jul 29, 2008 4:01 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not necessarily a failure
Teix is an upgrade over Kotch either way. So if we get to the postseason, I personally like our chances better than before.
This is the best deal Reagins’ could’ve pulled within reason (ie. not signing Bonds etc). I like his thoughts.

Yep. That is the problem here...
The Halos were in the playoffs. Guaranteed. The issue is the offense in the ALDS, ALCS and WS. Talk about pressure – he basically has to be Bonds, v. 2002 to live up to the hype that we’ll place on him to be the savior we need to slay the east coast monsters…
Anyway, Teix is great – but it is a rental and we’ll need a first baseman next year too. Hello, Kendry Morales.

Short term vs long term
This will definitely get the Angels further into the post-season than the one-and-done post season series they’ve had most years since 2002.
Teixera isn’t signing ANY 2-3 year deals-get real, folks-and Boras is floating the idea of $230M/10 yrs. I think that is too rich for Arte’s blood, but it isn’t for the Yankees and Mets, both of which open new parks in 2009 and would love to have a marquee signing to add some extra hype. The Mets will trade Carlos Delgado for a bag of BP balls if it means making room for Teixeira, and the Yankees are so desperate for a 1B that they took a cheap flyer on Sexson—Giambi is gone after this season, too.
Plan on Kendry Morales at 1B in 2009, while the Angels move Mark Trumbo fast through the minors—they promoted him to AA Arkansas today, which is hardly a coincidence considering the deal announced today. Enjoy Teixeira at 1B while you can, because he’s most likely playing for an East Coast team for the balance of his career.
This is the equivalent of the Astros landing Carlos Beltran. Teixeira will make a splash in the post-season, only to enhance his value as a free agent.

The Kotchman trade hurts…good guy…and good team guy. But, when you always complain about the team making trades…and they finally do…i guess you can’t be too critical. Kotch will definitely be missed.
by gohalos912 on Jul 29, 2008 7:15 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Later kotch
This was truly an unexpected trade. Kotchman was definitely a very solid player and excellent hitter. tex is probably a rental player because our payroll is already weighed down by a lot of heavy salary choices: Vlad’s upcoming extension, GA’s option, Frankie’s free agency, etc. If things don’t work out, there’s always Morales….he finally has an opening in the lineup to play in. If Tex leads to a WS win this year, it will all be worth it. Morales will finally get a full year run with the Angels to gauge if he can live up to the “super-prospect” hype that surrounded his signing.
Of course, the negatives…one could argue that already Kotchman is nearly as valuable as Tex, at a much, much lower price. Lower prices mean more talented teammates. You’re talking about a guy that will be a $20 mil per player. Few teams can afford multiple players making such money. It will be interesting how things shake out during the offseason.
I love LAC.
by oasisman on Jul 29, 2008 7:23 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
well
GA is gone; that’s a no-brainer.
Teix is a better hitter than Kotch, and is the kind of player who can change a game with one swing more often than Casey. I assume the Angels are willing to make a serious bid for his services in November. If it’s not enough well, I guess we’ll find out what Kendry can do.
by jjackflash on Jul 29, 2008 8:10 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm sad
Kotchman was one of my favorite Halos-just the way he played, the way he was finally starting to show his true potential (like at the beginning of the season) after that midseason slump, and especially the connection with his dad (who seems somewhat disappointed but resigned to it as well, from the article-“if you’re happy, then I’m happy” to paraphrase). He just shined Angels ball.
But I love Tex, too. He’s a fantastic player. I really wanted us to go for it at this time last year, but now I don’t know. Is he really going to make a significant difference here? What will his VORP for us be vs. Kotch’s VORP for us? If Tex leaves after this season, I can see that the FO believes things will work out either way, and they’re right.
But I’ll still miss Kotch. It’s like Saunders said, it’s always disappointing to lose a teammate (even if he wasn’t my teammate in the strict sense). I guess it’s just a matter of letting go…
