My Sports World, Upside Down

My life as a sports fan, was turned upside down tonight twice.  I am from Alexandria, VA, 2 miles from the Maryland border, and now live in Farmville, VA, a town about an hour west of Richmond.  I mention this because I am not a fairweather fan, the Angels are actually the only exception to my strict allegiance to hometown teams, being the Washington Redskins, Maryland Terrapins football and basketball, and Joe Gibbs Racing (by way of the Redskins).

I grew up an Orioles fan, but was very disappointed with the team, with their decision to release  Billy Ripken, as I'm sure little brothers like myself all over the Washington metropolitan area were.  Searching for a new team, I became enamored with the Angels, to this day I don't remember why.

Anyhow, two things I've never experienced before, I experienced today.  First, that if you are a fan of other sports as I am, you may note that all of my favorite teams have won national championships in the last 25 years, also my lifetime, and I have never had a team go to the chamionship, and not win.  This is what it felt like to see John Lackey lose the no-hitter tonight.  I kept saying to myself, if he gets to the 9th, no way he loses it, and I was heartbroken.  I imagine this is what many fans whose teams lose in the championship must have felt like.

Secondly, the Angels made a blockbuster move at the deadline to pick up Mark Teixeira.  Year after year, I hear of the emminent trades the Halos are going to make, to the point where I assumre they are inevitable even before they happen.  Finally it happened, I feel like this is the year the Halos are making the big push to win the championship, and I haven't felt this good about the team since 2002.

For those of you who disapprove of this move, let me just leave you with this one thought:  If we sign Teixeira to a 5-year deal, I doubt many of us will miss Casey Kotchman for a while down the road, and this is the same group of people who every off season, wonder when the acquisition of the big bat is coming, well I say here it is.  I have experienced two very unsual feelings in my sports fandom tonight, and  I just thought I'd share, so Go Halos!

How do you feel about C.C. Sabathia?

We better get Rev. on the scene to blast this ‘mainstream’ article too!

“But here’s the other idea the Angels were telling people about Tuesday, even as they dealt for the biggest hitter available on the July trade market:

They still want CC Sabathia, too.”

Seriously though, where is CBS SportsLine picking this info up? Doesn’t Arte own like 10 million shares of CBS?

CC Sabathia

Let me tell you what is going to happen next year… in my opinion.

1 – Mark Teixeira is only a rental, so don’t get used to him in the Halo Red. He will be in pinstripes next year and we will be searching for a 1st basemen. Even with that said, I don’t care! He is here to help us toward our playoff push this year! 2 – CC Sabathia WILL be an Angel. He is currently building a house in So Cal and can’t wait to play in Anaheim. I can’t wait to pair up CC and Big John! Add Santana, Weaver and Saunders and we will be in business. 3 – Sean Rodriguez will have a shot to win the SS position in Spring Training and will do it! 4 – The Angels will package up Jon Garland and a prospect or two for a new first basemen. The question is who? I am thinking Adam LaRoche

Pretty sure that

Garland is a FA after this year so he won’t be traded…

I like your post and appreciate your point of view, but...

I am sure John Lackey would agree with me that the team getting a “W” was more important than any no-hitter. However, it would have been nice to have the first no-no at Fenway in like 50 years, as Terry Smith told the radio audience after the game.

by Downing Rules on Jul 29, 2008 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

It was very nice getting the W, especially in Boston, I just really really wanted to see that no-hitter, you could tell by John’s face afterward too that he was a little pissed.

Mebbe he was not happy with Mathis' thinking behind the plate at that time?

Francisco Rodriguez: 190 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

The Boston Radio aanouncers were giving dates of the no-no's

after the 6th inning non-stop. No doubt in a successful attempt to jinx it.

GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can

HTTR!

Today I lived through a “moderate” 5.4 earth rattler, saw the Halos finally make a meaningful trade (at the expense of one of my favorite young players), witnessed Big John come oh so close to a no no, AND received an email stating that the Redskins season tickets I had waited 8 looong years on a list for had been shipped (came home to find the Fed Ex guy had come and gone, leaving me with a complimentary door hanger).

What a day.

Dude. You are stuck in DC. In Winter.

Francisco Rodriguez: 190 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

You serious?

The Redskins franchise has been one of the most valuable and successful in American professional sports for a long, long time. And that’s despite Dan Snyder running it like his own private fantasy team as of late.

by ReggieBullits on Jul 30, 2008 6:12 AM PDT up reply actions

I saw their Super Bowl XXII victory in person...

tickets courtesy of the owner of the Broncos…

It was quite a game…for those Redskins.

I am really surprised, though, that they are still a tough ticket to get. I guess I just remember the 1992 – 1994 days in Anaheim for the Rams….I used to buy the cheapest seats, day of game, then walk down to the 50 yard line and sit amongst the people that had paid triple what I paid.

by Downing Rules on Jul 30, 2008 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

And that's why they're no longer in Anaheim.

That game made me a fan. My best bud in 1st grade was a Skins fan so naturally I was leaning towards them that season. Then the epic Super Bowl comeback lead by the injured and regular season backup QB Doug Williams (who on top of the injury in the 1st quarter, had a root canal the day before) and rookie RB Timmy Smith making his first NFL start (in the SUPER BOWL!! 204 yards, 2 TDs) sealed the deal for me. Been a fan ever since.

Did you take any photos?

by ReggieBullits on Jul 30, 2008 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

No joke

For you west coasters, Redskins tickets are very very hard to come by, and thats with nearly 100,000 seats. Redskins Cowboys seats go for 5X face value. But on the plus side, apparently there are other Angels and Redskins fans!

Hello.

I noticed you were talking about me.

JGR...

I went to Joe Gibbs Racing during a trip to the Carolinas in May. I got a couple of photos of his super bowl rings that were on display. Nice setup there for car racing enthusiasts. Joe bought into a hot-shot kid with an attitude problem and man is that paying off for him.
