What do you think of this move?
Here's my moves
Cleveland: Juan Rivera, Maicer Izturis, and Nick Adenhart for C.C. Sabathia
Colorado: John Garland and Mike Napoli for Matt Holliday
I really like Napoli, Willits, and Izturis. But if they could bring us another world class starter and a spark to our outfield offense.
That would make our starting line up look like...
3B Figgins
2B Kendrick
LF Holliday
RF Guerrero
DH Anderson
CF Hunter
1B Kotchman
SS Aybar
CH Matthis

you've got a few holes...
first off, both teams would want waaaaaaaaaay more for both of those players.
secondly, GA has no business batting 4th in the order anymore. he shouldn’t be hitting anywhere higher than 6th. ever.
thirdly, we’re in no position to trade out starting pitching, and BOTH of those teams would want it, not just one of them.

Maybe we can throw in our version of Kwame Brown (GMJ) in there,
and the Rockies brass will be as stupid as Memphis to bite. And GMJ will waive his no-trade clause????
Nah, back to reality …........... We’re stuck with that albatross.

Meh,
I was just trying to get some discussion going. What would it take for Sabathia? Would it be worth it? What would it take for Holliday? Would it be worth it?
by Jay Cal on Jul 3, 2008 10:01 AM PDT 0 recs
i said this in another post
to me, holliday would cost weaver, wood, willits and adenhart
people are comparing the contract he’ll be getting to the one miguel cabrera just got. He still has another year on that contract after this season, so its not a half season rental, thus hes more expensive. So put your offer more in the ballpark of what we were offering for Miguel Cabrera
also, fyi, jon garland is a free agent after this year and mike napoli is not better than yorvit torrealba really. So youd actually be paying about .01 on the dollar there. if even. thats like 1 peso on the dollar.
by ihearhowie2.0 on Jul 3, 2008 10:30 AM PDT 0 recs
"mike napoli is not better than yorvit torrealba" ...
... is one of the dumbest things I’ve heard in a while. Napoli has a career OPS of 109; Torrealba: 80. Napoli has 38 homers in 626 ABs, none of them in Coors Field. Torrealba has 34 in 1499.

While I agree
with you that I would rather have Napoli, I would suggest that Yorvit is a superior defensive player. That is purely opinion however.

i tend to agree
naps+coors field=40 HR potential (at least). While the rockies would love that, the discussion is moot. Why? Because anyone familiar with the rockies needs will realize they already have a hotshot catcher prospect. they dont need a catcher.

although I agree
it would take more then the diary suggested to get him (Naps and a pitcher in his last yr of contract) – I don’t think it would take as much as you suggest. I am not necessarily for getting Holiday but I think it would probably be along the lines of Matthews (+50% of his salary), Adenhart, Napoli.

We don't need another pitcher
Especially one that would take a lot of proven talent and/or great upside prospects for a pitcher in his walk year when you can get a solid pitcher avaialble for nothing but money – Freddy Garcia. Wouldn’t even need to sign him long term.
BTW – did I mention pitching really isn’t our need right now

Here's my moves
Cleveland: Nick Green, Brandon Wood, and Nick Adenhart for C.C. Sabathia
Colorado: Nick Green, Hanley Statia and Nick Adenhart for Matt Holliday
by BBFan1 on Jul 3, 2008 12:12 PM PDT 0 recs
My opinion is
that Cleveland may have thier sights set too high. Sabathia IS a CY winner, but clearly something is amiss with him this year. They are NOT offering any negotiation window, so that would seem to lower thier return..
As the deadline approaches, I think it will become clear who is still a viable contender and who is not. The wild speculation will give way to what the tribe can really hope to get in return for 2+ months of thier (potentially hurt) ace.
Cleveland really has no choice but to trade him, regardless of what Shapiro says about draft compensation.

CC Sabathia for FREE (relatively speaking) in NOVEMBER. Apparently his agent has already contacted Reagins about being interested in a deal (not sure if I read that here or elsewhere…).

Hypothetically
They would never mention names, but maybe the agent calls up and says:
“What if, and we are just spitballing here, I had a 6’7” 300 lbs pitcher who is a Cy Young contender each year and strikes out lots of guys …. what would someone (not naming names) like that be worth to you?
I don’t see that we really need him worse than the teams that are really going to open the wallet. I know the Red Sox would want him, but they have no room at the moment. Most likely he winds up in New York.
But me, just once I would like to have an off-season where we don’t sign any “type A” FA, so we can have a first round pick.

The players you wouldn't mind trading away
are the same players other teams don’t want. Teams are going to ask for Saunders, Santana, Weaver, Kendrick, Dondo, K-Rod, Lackey and Kotchman. Unless Im forgetting someone everyone else on the team would basically be worth minor leaguers or be fillers.
You would never accept a trade for three unproven players for Lackey, would you?
I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....
by PhiSlamma on Jul 3, 2008 1:32 PM PDT 0 recs
I agree with you...
and that’s a good way of putting it by comparing a trade for Lackey.
I think the Angels will be fine, no way they should trade for Holliday…he’s good, but not THAT good. And definintely not worth what it’d take to get him. The only move they should make is maybe to upgrade the bullpen, but then only something minor. Playing Rivera full time (if he’s able to duplicate his 2006 numbers) and sitting GMJ would be like making the trade the Angels need.

Oh, and another thing
If a team signs Bonds now, would they have to give up a draft pick? Was he a type A free agent, and if so, how long would a team have to wait before they don’t lose a pick?
I personally think Bonds would be a good addition, but only with the strict stipulation that there’d be no entourage, special treatment, etc. The guy’s a dick, but he’s an on base, slugging machine.

Deal for Jason Bay
Wouldn’t a “rebuilding” team be a tad more willing to take a gaggle of unproven players for one hitter? That way, if more than one turns out to tear it up in the bigs, they’ve got young, cheap talent for years.
The Pirates seem to be unsettled on a SS and have an offensively weak 2B. Bautista at 3B has a bit of power, but a low BA, and their starting rotation looks dismal.
So, we ask for Jason Bay who’s career OPS is .892, and he isn’t a free agent until after ‘09.
We give them a replacement outfielder (Rivera or Willits), 2 AAA infielders (Wood, Brown, Rodriguez…take your pick) or just Maicer Izturis, and 1 AAA starter (Adenhart or Green). I think they would only stand to improve, and we’d have a 2nd genuine slugger.
Then, we go with a lineup of Figgins, Kendrick, Bay, Guerrero, Hunter, Kotchman, Anderson/Matthews, Napoli/Mathis, Aybar. Pretty fierce.
I acknowledge that this leaves us a little thinner on the bench and in the farm, but we’ve got to shake things up a bit.
I will now accept your criticism.

We don't have guys with patience and power
It seems like the Angels’ offensive ability is hindered because there are not enough guys who are going to work the counts and make you pay when it counts.
I’m going to be banging my head against something, when we are down 6-2 in a clinching game for the other team in the Division Series. I can see it now, Juan Rivera and Kendry Morales are still sitting on the bench despite being legit power threats. HGH or Aybar are trying to unsuccessfully bunt for a hit, Vlad is hurting, while GA strikes out with the bases loaded as our season dies in the wind.

Except the problem the last three playoffs has been actually getting our team on the field
2004- Bart is hurt, Glaus is hurt, Guillen is gone, Garret is hurt, Erstad is hurt, Salmon is hurt, Bengie is hurt. Rather unsurprisingly, we lose.
2005- Mostly fine until game 5 of the ALDS, where our second best hitter (Bengie) is pegged by the Yanks. Cy Young winner Colon pulls something. We still win the first game, and probably would have won the second if not for a certain jackass umpire. Instead, momentum shifts, and short series being what they are, we lose.
2007- Vlad hurt, GA acquires pink-eye, Figgins hurt, GMJ hurt, Kotch gets food poisoning.
The whole “one big bat” thing is a myth. All we’ve really needed is 9 healthy guys.

Health
The front office stance for the last several years has been ‘oh if all these guys are just healthy, they’ll perform to their capability.’
The problem is the Angels have never been healthy come the post season [as noted] and if the Angels don’t get help, maybe the team is the equivalent to a Oakland team [gets to the playoffs, but doesn’t quite get it done] as opposed to a team that can reach the World Series.

Problem is
health tends to be the determining factor in who wins. In both 2004 and 2007, Boston had all their guys ready to go (Though Curt Shilling did tough out that ankle injury). St. Louis sucked all year, but in September they got healthy, and the Mets got hurt.
In 2002, we were healthy, and we won. In 2005, we were healthy for the first series, and we won. One more big bat would not have made the difference in 07 or 04 with the other problems we had. Things like pink-eye and food poisoning are random and uncontrollable. And in fact, most of the time the WS winner was healthy through the regular season too.

speaking of jason bay...
“The Angels are in the hunt for a big bat before the trading deadline arrives at the end of the month and the team wants either Colorado’s Matt Holliday or Pittsburgh’s Jason Bay. Bay is more likely since the Angels probably wouldn’t be able to trade big leaguers for Holliday and the team would also need to divest itself of Gary Matthews in order to afford the deal. Matthews has a no-trade clause and apparently doesn’t really want to go anywhere. (Denver Post)”

I think you forget what a healthy, full-time Juan is capable of
.310, .362, .525, .887
That was his line the last time we actually played healthy Juan Rivera. Jason Bay and Matt Holliday will NOT do any better than that out of Angel Stadium. I guarantee it.
