Close Race=Saunders and Lee
The Race for the starting pitcher for the al in the allstar game is really heated as both the pitchers are having unbelivable years and i think Colonel and lee are almost the same pitcher in they get NO RUN SUPPORT and yet still win on a consitent bases, i dont know who sould be Starter both are already on the team i would guess they will pick lee since hes era is low, what do you people think![Note by WillGoAngels27, 07/04/08 5:11 AM EDT ]

Lackey>Santana>Saunders
...and that’s before we even factor in other AL starters.
Can’t see Saunders starting.

I'd go with Roy Halladay
Dude has been dominant for a long while now, not just one half, and he leads the world in stuff like IP & SO. Plus, I only want Joe to work one inning, so our 2nd half rotation don’t get screwed up.

If rumor and ESPN are to be believed,
Mariano Rivera may get the start so that he gets to pitch a meaningful inning during the last All-Star game in the House That Ruth Built. Of course, this could also just be a manufactured talking point so that when he doesn’t get it, they can play it as a snub and devote yet further hours of coverage to the Yankees-Sox Rivalry.
At any rate, Lee has more than half a run in ERA on Joe, as well a better peripherals all around. (Note: This does not mean Saunders hasn’t been awesome. He has and without him and Santana performing the way they have we’d be lucky to find ourselves above .500 at this point.) Along with Halladay (who doesn’t lead anyone in SO, being tied with Ervin for 4th in the AL), another guy who will probably get consideration in Justin Duscherer, the current AL ERA leader among qualifying pitchers at 1.96.
It goes without saying that if a certain pitcher had even 3 more starts, he’d be the leading candidate by far.
As for the NL, Lincecum gets the edge over Volquez, just because I find the fact that he’s 10-1 and thereby more or less single-handedly keeping the Giants out of the NL West cellar hella impressive.

Oh please...
Do you really doubt that? If you listen to NY sports talk radio (and ESPN radio for that matter), there is the great Mo and and then everybody else. The fact that Frankie is on track to shatter the save record only got mentioned here because Kardiac Rod blew that save against the Mets.
Last time I checked, the great Mariano has three losses and they were deserved. He has exactly the same number of innings pitched (37.1) and has appeared in only five less games and has 12 fewer saves.
I know he’s had a great career and he seems like a classy modest guy, I hate hate hate the lack of press about Frankie and the diefication of Mariano.
Do I sound like a bitter fan with an inferiority complex? Your point?

Volquez get the start in my book
he’s only had 1 or 2 starts in which he’s given up more than 2 runs…

Saunders does not line up well
Saunders will be starting on the Sunday before the All-Star Game. Doubtful he pitches in the game at all.
Agree with you though that it is close between him and Lee as “Starter” is often determined by wins and not by deeper stats.

Saunders
Santana
KRod
Lackey

I would go so far as to say
that not only is there an argument for all 4, but all 4 should damn well make it.

They make it according ESPN's Player Ratings thingy
Though there are a number of pitchers (Marcum, Danks, Hernandez) who get shafted in the process.

sorry fellow Angels fans
The easy choice is Lee and Volquez his opponent (although you could make an argument for Lincecum)

Actually, I would rather
none of our guy pitched in the game. I’d rather they get the rest and have a chip on their shoulder for the remainder of the season.
