Dodgers need SS, anyone know a team with surplus SS's?
I DO I DO!
Any chance Colletti and Reagins can come up with a deal? Got any ideas? See poll. Who do we want/need in return? LaRoche for 3b? Loney/Kemp/Ethier for OF?
How about Iztu for LaRoche?
[Side note...Angels activated Bootcheck today and subsequently outrighted him to SLC. This leaves us with 39 on the 40 man roster. Room for a trade or ??? See game notes. ]
Link to story...portion below...
The loss of Rafael Furcal to back surgery this week might lead Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti to a trade involving at least one of his prized young core players.
"We're more open-minded to who we may have to move than we were in the past," Colletti said Friday.
That is a shift in philosophy for Colletti, who has refused to part with the club's top prospects since he took over after the 2005 season, filling most holes with expensive free-agent signings.
Colletti wouldn't name names. But while All-Star catcher Russell Martin is presumed to be untouchable, Colletti's comments certainly put in play other young players like Matt Kemp, James Loney, Andre Ethier and Andy LaRoche, as well as a possible veteran such as Friday starter Derek Lowe, who is likely to leave as a free agent after the season anyway.

I dunno.
Kemp and Ethier are still young. For the right price, I’d do it. I still say Juan is better, but it’s hard to say no to the 25 year old.

i think the odds of them trading kemp or ethier to us
are about 9.12 billion to 1
it would be like us trading howie to the dodgers. we’d all just freak out

Yeah.
But unlike our GMs (Stoneman especially) Colletti seems to be a legitimate moron where his young players are concerned.

Really
Are we really considering trading one of our two decent SS (with all our injury hassles) for yet another OF? As if a severe lack in OF is our problem. Please.
by matthiasstephan on Jul 4, 2008 10:29 PM PDT 0 recs
I am speculating...
but our minors are pretty bare…especially of OF’s…with all of the SS’s we have in our system, you know we are going to have to either trade some or move them to other positions eventually…I say it is time to fleece the Dohhgers asap! Especially if we can package a pitcher in return…(not Lowe!)

Brewers have surplus SS talent
If you consider Bill Hall to be “talent.” JJ Hardy has been hot, though, and he’s blocking a really good AA SS (A. Escobar) expected in another year or so. Don’t know what they’d want in return though, since I don’t think the Dodgers would give up Kershaw or Kemp.
by Brew Angel on Jul 4, 2008 11:05 PM PDT 0 recs
It all depends ...
... on whether Brandon Wood’s a shortstop or a third baseman, and whether we re-sign Figgins. At this moment, there is no SS surplus, because Aybar & Izzy are both injury prone, and the next level below, as we saw in May, can’t really hit yet.
BUT. If we re-sign Figgins, then Brandon Wood is extraneous, and probably SHOULD be traded while he still is considered to have upside, because there’s nowhere else for him to go.
My preference is to let Figgins walk, take the much-need draft picks as compensation, play Wood at 3B next year, survive through the first lousy 200 ABs, and accept Izturis as your Figgins-style super-sub on the infield.

THIS IS ACTUALLY A SERIOUS OPPORTUNITY
The Dodgers are run by Grade-A retards, who are openly advertising their desperation for a shortstop & willingness to give away their allegedly uncoachable young talent. That means Matt Kemp - a monster outfield talent who can hit and run and draw walks RIGHT NOW - is totally on the table, if we’re willing to part ways with a shortstop. What’s more, we’ve got surplus outfielders to ease the Dodgers’ pain—especially Juan Rivera. And, they’ve got a logjam at third base & might just be stupid enough to clear it out by trading Adam LaRoche.
SO. I sure hope we’re talking to the Dodgers. Aybar or Izturis and Rivera for Kemp? I’d do that in a heartbeat.
by mattwelch on Jul 5, 2008 8:33 AM PDT 0 recs
So would I. Though I doubt they'd be very happy about being stuck on the bench
the way Juan has. Still, if we can work the deal and get Kemp it would be absolutely worth it, even if we have to wait till 09 to really use him.

Kemp = GMJ on the bench, except against lefties
No way in hell you leave that much talent on the bench. That way, too, GMJ will be pressured to waive his no-trade. Which would be awesome.

I'm thinking they might look for Willits over Rivera
but for Kemp I might still do it. The only reason I hesitate is that Kemp K’s a LOT. The guy I really want is Loney, assuming he could play left.

Concur
I’d send them Izzy, whom I like a lot, but if he’s anything like his half-brother, he’ll get increasingly fragile with worse offense. Kemp is probably Jason Bay with a bit higher upside, if he can cut back on his K’s. It frankly addresses a need in the OF over the longer term.
And Ned is a grade-AA retard.

Let’s get LaRoche. The Dodgers, in their idiocy, prefer DeWitt over Andy right now. Andy’s bat is far more explosive and from what I’ve seen, he’s more than adequate at the hot corner.

Back to his rover job
Which, given the fragility of Izturis, Aybar & Kendrick, means he’d get plenty of playing time. Still, I think Kemp is by far the most likely bait.

True, but his K/BB ratio is actually improving
From 5.9-1, 4.1-1, and now 3.6-1. He’s got an incredible body, can play all three OF positions, and would do much better (I think) surrounded by an organization with high standards, a winning culture, and great coaches.

As one of my old coaches once said ...
... I can teach any idiot to hustle and throw to the right base. What you can’t teach is to hit like that, or have a body like that at age 23. On a team largely without knuckleheads, you could knock sense into him.
Also, he may be a space cadet of a runner, but A) could he really be worse than Erick Aybar?; and B) 34/9 on stolen bases is pretty damned good.

I don't think the Dodgers are trading Kemp- they'd be crazy
Where I am still waiting for Howie to take another base on balls
by hk47 on Jul 5, 2008 11:43 AM PDT 0 recs
Not only crazy
but stupid:
“We’re more open-minded to who we may have to move,” Colletti said.
Asked if he were referring to the young players, Colletti said, “They’re not really young kids anymore.“
Colletti’s comments echoed what owner Frank McCourt told me earlier in the week when asked about the possibility of trading some of the kids. He said the ones they will hold onto are “the ones who are prepared to put in the work, listen to coaches and get better every day.” The kids who they would be willing to part with are “the ones that can’t do those things.”
Kemp, if you’ve been following along with the Dodger front office stupidity, is exactly the target of that. So in three brief paragraphs, Colletti has
1) indicated his young, pre-arbitration talent is now “not really young” (BS!)
2) marked his most valuable trade chits as “uncoachable”
3) shot himself in the foot.
Got all that? “Moron” doesn’t even begin to describe Ned Colletti.

"Dodgers may consider moving untouchables"
Link. Excerpt:
Colletti also acknowledged if an opportunity arises to acquire such a player, it might result in the Dodgers trading at least one player who previously might have been deemed untouchable.
“We’re more open-minded to what we may have to move than we have been in the past,” Colletti said. He added it likely will be something more than a one-for-one trade.
He’s never publicly identified any player as one he would be unwilling to trade, but that list always was believed to include catcher Russell Martin, outfielder Matt Kemp, pitcher Clayton Kershaw and perhaps pitcher Chad Billingsley.
Martin, a candidate to play in his second consecutive All-Star Game, probably remains immovable, as does Kershaw, still the Dodgers’ top pitching prospect despite being optioned back to Double-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. Billingsley, who preceded Kershaw as the club’s top pitching prospect, is beginning to blossom into the dominating starter team officials always figured he would be.
That leaves Kemp, who is something of an enigma despite a team-leading 44 RBIs and .336 on-base percentage. He still is coveted by a host of other clubs.
Lots more like that. They’d be crazy, all right—because they ARE crazy. Just ask the Tampa Bay Rays.
by mattwelch on Jul 5, 2008 12:04 PM PDT 0 recs
hmmm Kemp would be nice, but it'll cost more than just our SS
you’re looking at Aybar/Izturis, Willits/Rivera, maybe a relief pitcher, plus 1-2 minor leaguers.
All in all, it might have to be
Aybar
Rivera
O’Day/Bulger/Thompson
(insert your minor leaguer here)
for
Kemp

If that's what it takes
it would probably be worth it. None of those three pitchers has much of a future in Anaheim. As dynamic a talent as Aybar is, Izturis is perfectly capable, and the Halos would still have Wood and Sean Rodriguez in the wings. Rivera is never going to get the opportunity to play, and is a FA after the season. So yeah, if they could get Kemp for that package, they’d do it in a heartbeat.

Again, I think Colleti might be more interested in Willits than Rivera.
Willits has better defense, gets on base, etc. It would be worth it either way (at least if Juan isn’t getting playing time. I REALLY wish Mike would start playing him instead of Juice), just saying. But if we could get Kemp for that combination of guys, we should absolutely do it.

as would i
Aybar has to be the centerpiece of that deal though. he’s a young, dynamic player that’s under team control for a long while. he’s exactly what the Dodgers are looking for.
and i agree.. if we can do it w/o surrendering Wood or Adenhart, then i say go for it. i’m sure it’ll probably take 4 players to get him.
as for Willits… i’m not sure. Rivera’s got the power that they might be looking for, and they already have a guy like Willits. it would depend on their ability to resign Rivera.

Willits might actually be ideal for them, right now.
With Furcal and Pierre both shelved, they need a leadoff guy. Aybar doesn’t fill that.

and you’re right, Willits might be a good idea after all.

Yup
Unless Brandon Wood REALLY makes some big adjustments between now and 2009, it’s entirely possible Sean Rodriguez will pass him. I know there are people who say I’m crazy - when has Rodriguez hit 45 longballs at any level? - but Brandon Wood is just not putting it together. He’s on pace for a third season at AAA with the numbers he’s posted so far this year:
Brandon Wood: .262/.319/.509 as a 23-year-old in his second full season at AAA.
Sean Rodriguez: .304/.420/.652 as a 23-year-old in his first full season at AAA. That OBP just jumps out at you.

Eh.
Wood’s major problem is that they’re tinkering with his approach in an attempt to turn him into something god-like. If he left it alone and just hacked he could put up Adam Dunn numbers I think. Anyone who has watched Wood’s PAs knows that the walks will come when people stop pitching to him (and they will, I think). But there is the potential in Wood for something incredible, and they’re trying to bring that out.
If you recall, the same thing happened to Kotchman at AAA. He smoked the ball when he first came up, but struggled in his second full season. Just like with Wood, it’s because they were tampering with his swing.
For S-Rod, the challenge was different- he’s already pretty much playing at his ceiling, the key is just pitch recognition and timing now.
