Vladimir Guerrero
Hi I have been on this site for a few years, and just signed up 2 talk ..
I can't say at how amazed I have been over the years at the negative comments towards a HOF player Vlad Guerrero ,who goes out and gives everything he has every night, plays with his heart on his sleeve, does everything his manager asks, doesnt distract the team, makes no excuses and puts up great numbers,as I have seen on this site and Facebook groups...
When Guerrero was in Montreal,he was worshipped,by the few who followed the team and who cared,we knew we had something very special. Here was a young, humble kid from poverty in the DR,playing out his dream in the Majors,in a small, quiet city as Montreal 2 the baseball world, low media coverage and low attendance, this guy went unnoticed almost every year till he got 2 the Angels. His years in Montreal, there may have been no better all around player then Guerrero,he was a 5 tool superstar, with no protection in the order,he was still able 2 put up godly numbers on last place teams.
I knew going into his last contract year,he was all but done in Montreal,I was ok with that,in hopes he would go to a team deserving of his talents and fans deserving of having the PRIVILEGE of watching him day in and day out. I am sure the vast majority of fans see what he really is,but there are soo many ppl who are quick to write him off many times.. Who has had a quiter 2,000 career hits then Vlad ?? What man on the brink of 400 hr has less attention around that then him..
Last year all he did was put up 45 doubles,125 rbi, batted 324 and he 'fell off"
How quick this year people have been to dismiss Guerrero ,and will again be mistaken. He has 14 hr,leading the TEAM,and leading in RBI as well..
Maybe we should think about where the team would be minus the RBI totals the last 4 years ?? Who else drove in 100 runs other then Guillen ?? Nobody. Who hit 30 hrs every year for LAA ??
He has batted well over .300 every year for this team, yet gets a lot of blame when the team falls off,or when he is struggling. Players are allowed to go into slumps, not everyone can hit all year long.. Vlad plays through many nagging injuries and never complains. He hasn't commited an error this year, and ppl still question his defense.
I just think its sad when people don't realize how special a player it is that is Guerrero.Players like him don't come around every year,he is a once in a lifetime talent.Might not have the HR numbers of A=Rod,and in future Pujols, but he has numbers all around the board, and perhaps no player is as valuable to his team then Vladdy. Most go ahead RBI since he came 2 the Angels. His MVP year he carried the team to the playoffs
Some suggested this year, since he got off 2 a slow start, and you know, once in your career you can start off slow, doesnt mean you cant hit or play in the bigs anymore, that he was done and couldn't handle it anymore. How many players would trade there numbers for Vlads ?? There would be a long lineup of players I assure that. A guy should be able 2,once in 11 years,to be under .300 during the AS break, and to not be questioned.
I became an Angels fan due to the signing of Vlad, have loved the team ever since, what a great team the last 4 1/2 years.Hope this year we can beat the Sox!
I would just like,however,2 not read the negativity about Vladimir.and 4 ppl to stop bashing him..Wait till its all said and done, before you say what you think of him..
I would say come October,we see the same .300 30/100 we do every year, and many players would do a lot to have those numbers
Awesome site btw, have enjoyed it for years, get a lot of my team news here,as I am in the eastern part of Canada.

i agree completely with everything stated above
and thank you for the post! but i just wanted to keep the record straight. nobody hit 30 HRs last year on the angels, and vlad only hit 27. certainly age could be wearing on him, but i think he still has alot of great ball ahead of him. i do however worry regarding today’s announcement that he will be defending his 2007 derby title next week. i don’t think anyone forgets that slump he saw immediately following last year’s HR derby in SF…

I worry about that, too...
stay home, Vlad, and start a home run derby on July 18th, 19th and 20th!!!!!!

That's all well and good for Vladdy...
but dude, you have perhaps the most random amalgam of teams ever assembled onto one fan’s roster.

Yeah,I live in Nova Scotia, there ain’t no home town teams,so it was just however I became a fan is how I did, most guys here have different teams from all over as there favourites, most here like Boston ,but not me,just a personal preference. I was aware Vlad only had 27 last year,(a few 400 foot doubles could of went the other side of the fence)I was going on average,I doubt there are many that can name off his career stats as I can.

I agree any Vlad bashing is out of line
The guy is the franchise player. Sometime some HH posters are a bit pessimistic about things—for some it is because they are new fans but for many of us it is because being a long time Angels fan has produced a certain neurosis in us. Thus, aside from getting on individual players, some of us, get down easily on a team that is playing .600 baseball. It’s actually a sign of how much many of us care about the team because the team has played a big role in our lives. I think most people here think very, very highly of Vlad (not to mention GA).

I dont think anyone is bashing Vlad because they dont like him.......
but I have to admit it gets frustrating when you watch a player LIKE VLAD who has done so well over the years when he is struggling. You know he is capable of so much more so when he struggles its hard to not mention it. I know that Vlad is a big part of why the Angels have 3 AL WEST pennants in the last 4 years…......but I also know….he isnt immune to critism when things are bad either…...ah the joys of being a FAN!

I think everybody here knows how special Vlad is and holds him in the highest respect
like norcali said, it’s all part of being a fan. when people get upset in game threads, it’s just the emotion talking. Nobody really thinks “Vlad sucks” or he’s “the worst player ever”.
it’s tough to see such a great player and a great talent struggling, or even worse, declining. Fans, especially Angels fans, are not going to take that well.
it all comes with the territory.

These kinds of posts are becoming quite repetitive...
sorry to say, Nova Scotia, but you need to realize that we all LOVE Vladdy here, he is still the only guy the fans stop what they are doing to watch when he comes up to the plate. Even the beach balls stop bouncing. Trust me, we appreciate what we have. It will be apparent once you set foot in the stadium down here. Have you been?
A blog can become a bitch fest come game thread time, so if you base your rant on that, then it is not a valid feeling of the fans in general, but instead a heat of the moment thing.
That being said, we are also waiting for Vlad to come out of his batting funk, as he is batting well below his normal average. Surely, you saw his best years in Montreal (curse that turf!!!).

Who's bashing Vlad?
And hopefully they can just go back to bashing Hatcher, cuz everyone here seems to accept that nonsense.
by Wytelitning on Jul 7, 2008 4:12 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That was my thought.
What Vlad bashing? Where? There are a few who wish he wouldn’t hack at bad pitches as much, but that’s not the same thing as bashing and is mostly in the category of “in a perfect world…”
I’m not sure who this poster is talking about.

At the Sunday's game
I was sitting behind some British ladies on holiday who kept asking Q’s about baseball.
Even they knew to how to cheer when Vladimir came up to the plate.

No,I have not been to the stadium,to say that I would love 2 go is an understatement.I have only been 2 one major league park, the big O in 98.I was able to follow Vlad through the 3 sportstation we have hear,so I got 2 see most of his early years in Montreal, remember watching live his 40 th hrs,and his 40-44th hr. Walk off on Randy Johnson,Schilling,John Rocker, huge bombs.Remember his 400 ft single (off dead top of the wall)last day of the season vs Cincinnati in 2002 ,narowly missing the 40/40 club.I watched live his cycle vs the Mets in late 03..Was Glad in a way 2 see him go,the turf took its toll on him thats 4 sure.. As I said,I’m talking about these facebook groups, the articles written by the sportswriters, some comments I have read over the years about Vlad, his playoff performance,on this site…Every game I have watched of the Angels since 2004,I have been impressed by the fans and the atmosphere, and you have realized what I did way back in 97- you stop what your doing to watch this guy hit,he is unlike any other in baseball,Felipe Alou once said “no record is safe if this man stays healthy”.. Being appreciative to have Vlad on your team is great, because I am sure the Mets,Orioles,Dodgers and Rangers of the world sure wish they had of taken him when they had the chance.I’ll be posting an intresting Manny Ramirez vs Vladimir Guerrero post very shortly,it will be a good one

This place worships Vlad.
Sure, there is frustration at first pitch pop-outs in critical situations, but there is frustration at first pitch pop-outs/ground-outs for everybody around here. Meanwhile, everybody is actually pulling for him to regain his stroke.
And, honestly, his job is to mash the ball. As soon as he starts doing better than a failed Major League pitcher can do (Ankiel), the frustration will start to dwindle.

hmmm
Maybe he confused Vlad with GMJ, we shred that dude.
Honestly Vlad is not quite as good as he was at his peak, but he can still carry the team when on a hot streak. Also, I love how well he adapts when he is the DH.

the only thing down is his average

And based on his career hitting charts on fangraphs
he ought to be hitting better as well (.296 BABIP compared to .322 career)

I think a lot of people today overrate the HR..Vlad is the total package, even if hes not hitting homeruns,he still contributes 2 the team.He drives in the runs and gets on base. You don’t win with a HR hitter..
As about the negative comments,I didn’t think of this post based on what has been said the last months or so,this has been at me 4 a long time, and I mentioned that these comments were on facebook, written in internet articles, not just here,I didn’t say everyone, and these comments were about stretches, not just one game. They talk about Vlad as in decline, well look at his year last year..45 doubles,125 rbi..
I know there was an article, written recently on foxsports, and the writter said Vlad had lost it,that he was done, all the years of turf in Montreal had caught up.as I said, sorry that one year in your caeer you start off slow.
You may not have said anything about him, however I can assure you I recall things said about him ,and I did say most fans prob love him,but ppl are quick to turn when things don’t go as they like.. I wish Vlad hit 50 hr a year, but I don’t get on him cause he doesn’t. I’dl ike to see him hit .350,but when he doesnt I still know hes still a great hitter.Nobody wants to see him go more then me,but I know we got a lot of ball left, and the second half could be real good.I am aware that there will always be critics
So,then heres 2 Vlady and the rest of the team, continuing to play strong and to Vladdy reaching his 400th home run this year !
by raven191 on Jul 7, 2008 5:30 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't get it.
Where is all this bashing being spoken about? That is an awful lot of typing and ignoring of the space-bar dedicated to a subject that doesn’t seem to exist. I don’t even think he gets bashed much by fans on other team blogs. He’s just not really that kind of polarizing figure that Manny or A-Rod are.
I am gay for Vladdy.

I think it is kind of chickenshit for people like you and others like, "it looked like forever" (stop calling GA lazy fanpost)
to lurk and lurk, then drop a fanpost criticizing the regular posters for what they say about players on a day to day basis. I just don’t think you have the right to call out the regular membership and make a general statement that suggests we all criticize Vlad unfairly. Your lack of active participation and familiarity does not allow you the credibility to post a thread of this nature. It is obvious that you don’t read every game thread comment or fanpost because no rational person would have come to the conclusions you have in this post you have written.

I didn’t say it was all on here, I was talking about sportswriters, some facebooker messgaes..Secondly,Idc how long I have been active or not,I know what I have read, and sorry I didn’t say, well the comments were this person and that,if you read my first post,I didn’t say all the bashing was done here,I’m saying ppl are quick to forget what he has done in the past.I know his numbers are down this year, but lots of season left.I also said I am sure the majority of ppl on this site love him..

Wait a minute...
If I read every post on this site, but decide I have nothing meaningful to add and don’t comment, I’m not considered a “regular member”? I agree that if someone doesn’t post often, they lack credibility, but to be considered some sort of lesser member doesn’t make sense and sounds elitist.

There is a lot of bashing going around, but very seldom Vlad, and when it is Vlad its pretty mild.

when any player is slumping, there are always questions. even for A-rod there are quesitons about
can he hit in the postseason, does he know how to win, etc… but id still love a-rod on my team and im also really glad vlad is on my team, and any criticism that i make of him (not often at all) is not related to his overall skill, but rather (99% of the time) how his range in the field has been limited, and that i hope he DHs more for his own sake (and the teams)

Nice Post......I agree VLAD KICKS ASS!!!!! and I too became a Halo fan when he was signed
I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU.........since your from Canada have you heard of the world title fight between Librado Andrade and Lucian Bute? I ask this because Librado Andrade is my cousin and he is fighting Bute in Canada on October 24th for the World Title. If Andrade wins he will be the first Mexican in the History of boxing to win a Super Middle Weight Title.
Put Kendry Morales at 1B, and move Sean Rodriguez to 3B......NOW LETS GO WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
