A'ss trade harden and Gaudin for...

absolutely nothing.  On the surface this will seal the west for us but one cant count out the ability of Bean to find talent out of nothing....

http://sportsline.com/mlb/story/10890977

what do you guys think of the trade?

In my opinion this trade is the best thing to happen to the angels this season and for future seasons to come. they traded two quality starters for nothing in return! thank you billy bean! i can imagine that when we look back on the season we will see this as the turning point as to how the west was won and how it will be won for the next few years!

GO ANGELS!!!!!!!!!

sometimes the best trades are the ones never made, or in this instance the ones others make!

This Fan-Post is authored by an independent fan. Tell us what you think and how you feel.

but is good for the Angels in the short-run.

Angels in 08!

Will it help the Angels get past round 1 in October?

No.

Uh, possibly...

A suddenly lifeless A’s could mean an additional 9 automatic (or close to it) wins for the Halos…that could help the Angels get homefield in the playoffs, my sea-dwelling Halo friend.

Tru-dat.

You’re right. And that seemed to be a big factor last year.

Not really

It’s a pretty even trade says USSM and I agree. Gallagher is the deal’s centerpiece; he can be a very dominating lefty when he’s on, and he’s still a bit young to write off, but the Cubs’ future is this year the way they’re playing. In all, a good deal for both sides.

Witty .sig goes here.

Cameron is overrating Gallagher and underrating Gaudin.

Bottom line is the A’s blew up their season for a guy who needs a ton of work, two outfielder who are worse than what they already have, and a catching prospect at least three-four years away.

by Zu Long on Jul 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not as bad as it seems for Fremont

Gallagher is a 22 year old potentially very solid pitcher who has pitched well so far this year for the Cubs and will immediately be a factor in a still pretty good A’s rotation. Murton was the starting LF for the Cubs at the beginning of ‘06 and has great potential. His window though may be closing as his potential has gone somewhat unfulfilled. Patterson looks to be speedster who might get a chance for some playing time in LF for them and I think is about the same age as Murton.

Pretty even deal, I actually think.

by swiss mcgee on Jul 8, 2008 4:42 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Gallagher is a 22-year old

Who needs work and has pitch-count problems. Murton is a guy who will probably hit fairly well if given a shot, but expect the AL transition to hurt him. Patterson is getting old for a prospect, might hit well, might not. Donaldson is years away.

Overall? If they get lucky Oakland breaks even on this trade next year when Gallagher blooms into a good pitcher. Otherwise, they got beat, but not too badly. Biggest problem is they got a bunch of OF already, but Beane may flip them for someone else.

Doesn’t seem to have affected him much in 2008.

He's still having the pitch-count problems.

Under 6-innings per start. And he was pitching a lot better last year than Gallagher is this year.

The Cubs

Gave up nothing of any value to their team. They’re 5th starter, extra outfielder, extra infielder, and catching prospect (blocked by soto anyway), for two solid starters. To me, even if harden breaks down, this is a relatively low risk trade that still strengthens their rotation with gaudin slotting in behind 2 all-star starters.

Howie for MVP!

yeah, but the A's still did get some good pieces

it’s obviously a better looking trade for the Cubs at this point, but in a few years, who knows?

Great for us, another limp-dick feeling for A's fan!

The Ace has left that Hole in Oakland! Why be a long-term A’s fan when players at or on the verge of stardom leave that place? At least there’s two pitchers - Gaudin and Harden - that we don’t gotta face!

You ever feel as if your mind had started to erode?

by PieceOfAase on Jul 8, 2008 4:50 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I left out why I don't like facing Gaudin

a) He usually pitches shit lights out against us
b) He’s a damn ugly inbred hillbilly with a stupid goatee and looking at him makes me want to puke
c) He hits a lot of our batters, usually our good players, and usually injuries our guys when he beans us

Don't call me Desmond

This trade is good for the Halos today and tomorrow.

I don’t understand this move at all. Harden and Gaudin could have commanded much more from other teams. Hell, the trading deadline is still weeks away. Beane normally trades for high ceiling pitching prospects. Just don’t get this one.

Touch'em all

by THE VOICE on Jul 8, 2008 4:59 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Gallagher has a pretty high ceiling.

He needs to work on pitch count and control, but who doesn’t? He’s got some potential with 7.5 K/9 and a big frame though. Think Colon or CC Sabathia as his high end, Blanton as his low end.

Patterson, Murton and Donaldson are just "eh"

But Gallagher… go take a quick peak at the dude’s minor league numbers. He threw up a sub 3.00 ERA and good 1.24 WHIP with a K an inning in the minors, and did so at young-ish ages for each level.

Definitely scared of Gallagher, but yeah, the rest is crap.

if you're not competing now

2 starters (not under long term control) = Gallagher + pieces (under long term control.)

Still say the Cubs (and the Angels) come out slightly ahead overall. If harden is healthy, he is a bargain at 7M next year.

A little jealous

Whether it’s a good trade or not cannot be evident to anyone at this point, but what I do know is that Beane makes these significant mid-season trades in his sleep, and Rea-stonema-gins is paralyzed.

This makes me think we should be able to get Jason Bay for Willits, S-Rod, and Adenhart.

I swear, if one more person tells me to "work smarter, not harder"...

The Cubs only won 2 of the 10 games he appeared in this season.

Including his last start 7/6 against STL in which he went 6 and gave up 6 hits, 1 ER with 4 Ks and a BB. Tthat was on the road against a division rival. He lost his only other 2 starts this season, both to AL teams (CWS & BAL). The loss to the CWS looks like a product of no run support. He went 7 and gave up 3 ER on 5 hits.

I don't the Beane screwed up

It’s definitely a good trade from our perspective, but it’s only a matter of time before harden breaks down again and so beane sold him for less than his value when healthy. He basically gave up going for full value in order to get most of his value before he breaks down again.

Howie for MVP!

by angels.vlad27 on Jul 8, 2008 9:15 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Healthy?

I have a sneaking suspicion that Harden is already breaking down again. In his start against the Angels last Tuesday, his velocity was down noticeably and he had trouble throwing strikes – the Halos (of all teams) ran his pitch count to its limit in all of five innings. He got beat in his next start as well. I have a feeling that Beane didn’t want him to make even one more start for Choakland.

by jjackflash on Jul 8, 2008 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the Cubs approached Beane

so maybe he saw a golden opportunity to keep Harden off the A’s DL and still get new blood on the roster at the same time.

He claimed dead arm

after that start. Not a great way to start off your stint with a new team. Fortunately he’ll get some time off with the All-Star break.

Bet Beane

Don’t for a second think BB didn’t know what he was doing. I am with the post saying Harden is a few innings away from the DL. The guy has been on it more then he hasn’t in the last 2+ years.

Knowing BB I am guessing that as soon as the Brewers made the deal for CC Beane picked up the phone and called Jim Hendry knowing the Cubs would be willing to talk about a trade.

Murton is a guy that will help the A’s and can play. As for Gallagher he is a guy that has shot through the Cubs system. Cubs look like they may have gotten the best of the deal right now (Harden healthy) but time will tell for the A’s. After all im sure the Tigers thought they won in the trade for Doyle Alexander when he went 9-0, and all they gave up was a guy named Smotlz who wouldn’t see the big leagues for another year and when he did he went 2-7.

Harden wasn’t going to help them that much, and it was a big question mark as to whether he would be able to get them to the promised land even if he did hold up for a whole season.

But they are just a few games off the pace for a playoff spot

and half a season left to get it, with a favorable schedule. Why would you think that Harden would not be of enough help to get them into those playoffs? Why ditch two top arms in your rotation when the possibilities are lining up pretty well for you at the moment?

And most likely will break down again. But my point is that it’s not like the A’s needed a huge amount of support from him to make up those 3.5 games. Take as much as he gives ya’.

Favorable Schedule for the A's???

Not really. After the All-Star Break, The A’s have 41 road games remaining. 26 Home Games…to go along w/ a ton of injuries.

Regardless, he just traded away any possibility for this season. Maybe Harden tanks, maybe not.

And we may not be able to hit Texas pitching, but others will.

The new odds for the Angels winning the division in Vegas must be very tempting for non-angels fans.

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.
