My best mate from back home sent me a beer bottle opener
With an Angels logo on it, when you open the beer bottle, it says: “Fly ball center field … Erstad says he’s got it! ... Erstad makes the catch, the Anaheim Angels are the champions of baseball!”
I love that beer bottle opener. Every time I use it I remember the video in my mind of Erstad, his legs crossing over quickly as he got under the ball. And the immense quiet that descended around my little community in Orange.
And then when Erstad caught it, it was like this low rumble of noise coming from all the houses in the neighbourhood, just an awesome sound, like an approaching train. Every house for miles around had that game tuned in and when he caught the ball it was all those pent-up frustrations, all those years, in all those houses, that turned silence into a rumbling roar.
Watched it with my dad too. What an awesome memory and thanks for the post.
Brings a tear to old highlandhalo’s eye.

Yeah
Well be careful with that bottle opener because it’s pretty chintzy. Mine broke at the stress point while trying to open a beer. Now it doesn’t say or open anything.

You must have fists of steel
Cuz mine is still doing fine and I drink A LOT of beer. Mine still opens beer bottles and it still plays the call. It’s cool.

I still have mine and it still works, but...
yeah, it is starting to show some signs of stress. Thankfully, I am pretty sure that I just need to prevent total mangle-mation when it finally goes, and I will be able to retain the recording.
The trick on that opener is that the metal jaws that contact the bottle cap are actually two separate pieces, each on one side of an electrical circuit. When each piece comes in contact with the metal cap, the circuit is completed and the recording starts to play. But, because the jaws are NOT one piece, the whole thing is more fragile than most openers.
The solution, should it break, is to keep the pieces and build a new housing. Mount it on your fridge. Each time you grab your beer, just touch the cap to the two metal pieces and let the recording play while you grab your working opener and pop your beer.

If I could find a way to embed it in my sig,
so that people could click my sig and hear it, I would. (Until, of course, the MLB license police finally chased me down.)

Problem with mine
is that it broke at the skinniest point (the plastic neck of the opener just below bottom metal contact). The circuit is probably still closed but I think maybe a wire from the battery to the contact got disconnected or something. I bet if you keep your index finger pushed on the top of the ring of the opener as you pop a top, it might prevent the neck from snapping.
OK, you guys have inspired me – I wanna get out of work and go home and try and fix that sucker!

Great video, wish i was there for that game.
The only thing that stinks about it… speaking as father of 2 kids that has done this many a times, is experiencing such a great moment in life through the ‘eyes’ of the camera rather than taking it all in.
Hooters anyone?

yea that's why the video is IMO not good quality at all
I had one eye on the LCD screen and one eye everywhere else. I definitely took it all in.

man ...
my friends dad had a big screen inside of a delivery truck, so we took it down to the stadium and tailgated the whole game. we got lucky cuz a tv crew parked next to us so we used their generator for power. one of the best days of my life.
how rockin was it inside tho? cause we were partying like crazy outside

It was crazy inside
Although I’m sure my section in the Diamond Club wasn’t quite as rocking as say the OF lol. When the Angels won all I could really think about was how happy I was not for myself but for my Mom who has been going to Angels games since they moved to Anaheim and was president of the Booster Club for awhile.
Also one more thing about the game, afterwards I left the ticket in the plastic sleeve you could buy for WS tickets, and then I put a ticket from game 5 of the 86 LCS. I then hung it around my computer desk and it’s one of my most prized possessions. The best seats in 86 for the LCS cost 25 bucks, the WS tickets in 2002 cost 175 for those wondering.

it was insane inside
One of the things I’ll never forget is walking to the restroom before the 7th inning and seeing the looks on fans’ faces—Angels were up 4-1, and the expression on everyone’s faces was a strange combo of excitement, disbelief, and anxiety. It was like a stadium full of amped-up zombies.
