Heres a quick list of the leagues top closers, their reported 2008 salaries on ESPN.com and their save totals so far.
First thing that sticks out to me is that the 5 highest paid here are not on teams in position to make the playoffs as of today. Also, 4 of the 5 highest save totals on here are the cheapest closers. Also, Brad Lidge is one of the highest paid and definitely deserves to be this year...but was his contract worth 3 down years where he couldnt even pitch middle relief effectively?
Now, Rivera and Nathan are arguably the two "best" in terms of their peripherals, but I figure since Frankie's contract will largely be determined by save totals, I listed those:
Rivera - 15 million / 28 Saves
BJ Ryan - 12 million / 22 Saves
Wagner - 10.5 million / 27 Saves
Cordero - 8.6 million / 22 Saves
Isringhausen - 8 million / 12 Saves
Brad Lidge - 6.3 million / 28 Saves
Nathan - 6 million / 31 Saves
Valverde - 4.7 million / 27 Saves
Kerry Wood - 4.2 million / 24 Saves
Percy - 3.8 million / 26 Saves
Gregg - 2.5 million, highest paid on team(!!) / 25 Saves
Saito - 2 million / 17 Saves
Sherill - 980,000 / 31 Saves
Papelbon - 775,000 / 31 Saves
Bobby Jenks - 550,000 / 23 Saves
Soria - 426,500 / 32 Saves
Brian WIlson - 392,000 / 32 Saves
