Rays Lose Longoria, Crawford
Injuries bedevil the Rays, as both Carl Crawford (right middle finger tendon injury) and Evan Longoria (broken wrist, thank you, J.J. Putz) hit the 15-day DL, Longoria retroactive to Friday.

Will Carroll ($) thinks Crawford's injury may be more serious than has been hitherto acknowledged, and could end his season. Longoria originally thought it was just a bruise, but the team physician called it a break; the team expects Longoria will be out for three weeks, that is, the Angels won't see him in the upcoming August 18-20 series.

Why so sentimental?
Folks, let’s do the math:
We bitch-slapped the Crud-Sox here and thee, we PPPwned the Yankees big time, meanwhile we are 2-4 against the Rays.
At this point, give me a reason why any sane Angels fan should be rooting for the Rays to make the post-season over the aging empires of the east who we finally hav conquered?

Sort of my point
The Angels will see them minus two key players. Not that they couldn’t call up David Price and get both Longoria and Crawford back in time for the postseason and be even stronger, though they’d have to call up Price before the September 1 deadline most likely if they wanted him on the postseason roster unless they were in a position to pull a K-Rod and find somebody on the DL whose spot Price could take.

Because we want to beat the best
And because we want the Gods to punish YankeeBall (i.e., throw money at everything), while rewarding AngelBall (i.e., hire an ex-Scioscia coach, and play the game right with a bunch of kids).

I can think of a couple of reasons.
1. Part of me likes to root for Joe Maddon’s club. He was an awesome coach and deserves the success.
2. As a guy who watched the Angels through most of the 90’s, I will ALWAYS root for someone without a WS win over the Yankees and RS. I don’t think I could change that now if I wanted to. And I don’t.
3. I’m kinda miffed we won’t be get the chance to test ourselves, their full lineup against ours.

This.
Especially number 3. Now we’re pretty much expected to take two of three. With Longoria/Crawford in and their home record, there was some doubt in certain quarters that we could beat them. Just like the in the 4×100m relay vs the French, it’s more fun to take someone down when they talk smack before hand.

I don't care about beating the best
I hope every team that’s in the playoffs goes in with their best players on the DL, so the Angels can sweep every series.
It doesn’t matter how they win, AS LONG AS THEY WIN IT ALL, baby!!

So did Troy Percival. ;-)
Would 2002 have been as awesome without Barry Bonds looming over our heads? I think not.
I say, with both teams 100% healthy, the Angels can take ANYBODY, so bring it on.

Then the Rays need to go All In as well.
Time to grab Sheffield.

And Waveland?
They’re closer to the postseason than that...

Spoken like a guy...
whose significant other is a Cub fan.
You know – it’s amazing that when I was growing up both WGN and TBS televised baseball everyday.
I knew the Cubs and Braves better than I knew the Halos back then. Of course, I was about 10 in 1982, so I was following baseball, but there were not that many Angel games on TV and I could dial in America’s Faves or team Budweiser every day of the week – pretty much.
Bob Horner’s 4 homer game? Saw it. Craig McMurtrey’s only good season? Watched it. Keith Moreland or Jody Davis? Who cares, bot could crush the ball. Rick Suttcliffe’s crazy half season in Chicago after a trade in mid-season? Witnessed it. Mel Hall? Leon Durham? Glenn Hubbard? Brad Komminsk? Yep – I remember them. Scary stuff right there.
Ryne Sandberg or Dale Murphy?
Ryno – big time.
Anyway, this is the rum n’ cokes talking.

I get the Waveland & Sheffield bit. Nice.
But the content? Not so much. Are you suggesting that the Rays would only make a grab for Sheffield to ensure a spot in the playoffs? If so, that is not what I was implying. I would not feel that way, anymore than nabbing Tiexiera helps the Halos get into the playoffs (although the Halos are far more secure there.) Rumors have Sheff interested in moving to TB, and now TB has a need. Sheff could help them sustain thier current position in teh AL East, but he REALLY helps improve their chances once they get INTO the playoffs. His diminishing skills are a plus, but his experience within a clubhouse of playoff rookies would be huge.

i am definately rooting for the rays
to win the east just to keep at least one of the evil empires out of the playoffs, and its hard for me to not pull for joe maddon and percy, as long as their not facing the angels or course

i really would not want to play the rays in the playoffs
especially when theyll have some shiny new stud pitchers brought up by then. We dont fare well against new pitchers who we havent seen before

Wow
Interesting turn of events from 6 days ago;
When the Rays seem to have put it together and were making solid strides the second half of the season.
A pipeline of talent, welcome to Anaheim.

The old baseball adage applies
Never like to see a guy get hurt, especially good guys like Carl Crawford. And part of me is pulling for the Rays of course because of Joe Maddon.
But I agree with the Rev on this one, I’ll take a boring win over an exciting loss any day, and I want home field advantage for the playoffs and I want to get to and hopefully win the World Series.
Nobody was crying for us last season when the Sux steamrolled us out of the playoffs with half our team banged up.

Exactly
I don’t think the Red Sox or their fans think less of their Championship because of the Angels massive injuries. Same with the Rays now.

Exactly, redux.
Injuries are part of the game. The team with the more depth, the better fitness, the better ability to avoid injuries and/or contend with them, is the team that is better (in those categories).
Would we have liked to have a full roster of healthy players in last year’s playoffs? Absolutely. But what if we still lost? Would we then say that it was not fair because we did not have every player competing at their season peak performance levels at that particular time?
Baseball fans who whine about the unfairness of injuries tend to have one thing in common: they root for the A’s.
