Vlad Guerrero wants to stick around. EXTEND HIM.
I know this might be a bit late, but I felt I had to comment on this. With a hat tip to Rob at 6-4-2...
http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-shaikin10-2008aug10,0,3425244.story
So if this article can be believed, Vlad would like to stick around and end his career as an Angel. Now far be it from me to question Reagins and I know Arte says he wants to keep Vlad around, but...DEAR ****ING LORD SIGN HIM NOW. THIS IS NOT A HARD QUESTION.
Even at 75-80%, which is what he's been for most of the year, he's still put up around an .830 OPS, which we can certainly use. More than that, he's been tearing it up since the break and I give it even money he'll finish the year with 30 or more HR's, a .300+ avg, and a .900+ OPS. In a year where for half the season he was struggling with a leg issue and poor luck. If he wants to stay and he'll take a discount to do it, FOR GOD'S SAKE EXTEND HIM.

There's no reason why the angels shouldnt extend Vlad now........
give him 75-80 over the next 4-5 years…..........back load the back end with incentives and such….....and keep the division titles and (hopefully) WS titles.

75-80 over 4-5 yrs?!?!
wow, that is some crazy money for a guy who is old and getting older quick. He’ll soon be a FT DH.
I think adding 2 yrs onto his 2009 yr is acceptable. So 3 yrs after this current year. Total amount 3/45-50.

Not to mention
Probably the first HOFer to go into the Hall wearing an Angels cap. I know that’s been mentioned before on here, but it makes sense to me to repeat it. It means something to me …

But then again, I feel that way about Garret Anderson as well. What are we going to do with Garret? He can still mash.
As per the previous point about Vlad going into the Hall in an Angels cap … I suppose Troy Percival could beat him to it. But I have a sinking feeling that Percy won’t make the Hall.

He’s actually hitting as a DH, given in to the role. Give Juan left field and let GA DH at least in 09, maybe give him an option for 2010. And yes, sign Vlad now!

Try to sign Rivera—but i doubt it happens.
Kendry becomes the FT DH. If Kendry must play 1B for Tex leaving, then make a better effort at signing Rivera…or move Figgy to LF with Wood at 3B.

If he finishes the season at the same numbers as last year

Look around the league at the average contract right now and I dare you to say otherwise.

Dare taken.
A .763 OPS (because this year counts too) for a corner outfielder is well below league average. If he could somehow get that number up to the .828 number he had last year, then I’d guess he’d be about league average for a left fielder.
A $2 million contract I recall is around the league average salary. Also, keep in mind this salary would be on top of the $3 million buyout currently owed to him, so we’re really talking about $5 million for a below average player (or an average one in your extremely sunny scenario).
The reasons for resigning GA are sentimental, not production based. I wouldn’t mind seeing him back next year in a part time role to finish off his career, but I don’t think that’s what he wants or that the front office would dare offer. And looking at his production broken down month by month over the past 2 years (famine then feast, then more famine, then a little more feast) indicate to me that he can no longer handle being an every day player.

You can't factor in the bonus
it’s a previously committed-to-sunken cost. It’s been due to him, no matter what, since 2004.
Given Garret’s tendencies in production, what he has done in the last month and a half is exactly what should be expected of him for the next month and a half. He’ll likely finish around an .800 OPS overall. Currently he sports a 101 OPS+.
And a .763 OPS isn’t WELL below league average for a corner outfielder…you just generally want better than that. And it’s incredibly naive to judge how much Garret is worth solely on OPS. If that was the only factor ever weighed into a contract, every contract in baseball would be different.
When it comes down to it, a free agent 36 year old outfielder with 18-20 homers, 80 RBIs, and a .290 average is NOT a $2 million player in any market. That precedent has been established repeatedly. If you want to argue otherwise based strictly on OPS, then enjoy. However, it is rather disingenuous to say “Garret’s OPS is average, therefore his salary should be exactly league average.” Nevermind the dozens, if not hundreds, of major leaguers who drag that salary number down TREMENDOUSLY because they are not working on a free agent contract (the only type of contract that matters in such a debate, since the only basis for comparison is against his peers in free agency, not 22 year old farm hands making league minimum, or 25 year olds trapped in arbitration), but Garret has a proven track record that dictates far more respect than a contract 1/25th the size of Gary Matthews Jr. or 1/18th of Andruw Jones.

And Andruw is a pretty good comparable
since, when he signed his contract, he was a heavily declining player with an otherwise good track record in fairly recent years. I’m not saying Garret should be getting $18 million a year here. I’m saying a $2 million offer for his production in 2008 is just a fucking laugh.

I'll shit my pants if GA ends the year with 18-20 hrs.
I don’t doubt that he’ll get more than $2 million. In fact, I’d bet that the Angels would pay him about $5-7 million and then plop him in the middle of the order next year. And we all know proven veterans produce better than rookies despite what the stats may indicate. Remember Erstad delaying Kotchman getting the 1B job even though it was clear it’s was time for Casey?
GA will struggle early in the season. Then he’ll heat up a little bit. And that will be followed by some more struggles as those nagging injuries he’s had for the last 4-5 years linger further.
You can ignore OPS if you want, but .763 is in fact well below average for a corner outfielder. Here’s a link to LFs ranked by OPS. I’m no math whiz, but ranked 16th out of 18 seems to me to be below the median.
I’d try to save some money for Teixeira, Rivera and Vlad when his contract is up.

You'll shit your pants
if Garret somehow manages to hit 5 home runs over the course of 48 games? Lord. Better get the washer and dryer ready.
And go back and read what I said. It’s not a matter of what I think in regards to OPS. That’s just not how contracts get signed. At the end of the day, he’ll be a free agent outfielder sitting on the market with more than 80RBIs and a .290 average. Simple fact to anyone who has watched a single baseball game in the last decade: THOSE GUYS MAKE MORE THAN $2 MILLION A YEAR.
$2 million is absolute shit-on money in today’s game. He’d likely get an 8 figure, multi-year deal (and not be wholly undeserving of it) from some other team. A one year, $2 million contract is what Darren Oliver gets, or what an early-arbitration player with little track record gets. And mark my words…he finishes the season about .763.
This isn’t a matter of me grossly over-valuing Garret Anderson, or salivating at the mention of his name, or saying we should give him a 5 year, 100 million contract…it’s a matter of you obviously having absolutely no clue how little a 1 year, $2 million contract really means…especially in the terms of a still-producing outfielder.

Not to mention, I said that Garret is worth, on the market, a MULTI-YEAR, eight-figure salary. Don’t distort my words…or at least read them more carefully. All that means is that he could get a 2 or 3 year, 10-15 million deal. Not 5 years and 50 million.

My point is there is a way to not overpay
while also not paying him a 2 million dollar slap-in-the-face.
You seem to have no sense of middle ground. If you really want to continue to argue that a player of Garret’s calibur (and outside the context of this argument, you and I would both likely agree that Garret will finish the season with 18-20 homers, probably close to 90 RBIs, and a .290 average, with an OPS at or just over .800) is only worth $2 million a year in production terms, I suggest you become the general manager of the A’s or something. That’s not what that type of production gets paid today. The only thing you seem to be able to hammer home right now is that GA has a 101 OPS+. You take nothing else into consideration, and slap a 1 year/2 million price tag on that. That’s why I question how much you actually follow this sport, because that’s just NOT what those players get, nor is it what they “deserve.”
You say Garret is ranked 16th of 19 in OPS amongst left fielders. Okay. He’s also 9th in RBIs, 8th in average, and 10th in HRs. Since this all essentially puts him at league average, and since league average producing veterans have been getting better than 1 year/2 million for 6 or more years now, it has long since been determined that Garret’s production, on the open market is WORTH more than $2 million. Period. Saying otherwise is just a lie.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to ruin your day with my stupid opinion on a sport that I’ve never heard of.
I think you miss my point that we shouldn’t be letting a player like Teixeira go due to cost concerns while we overpay for league average production (and I get that we disagree on this league average thing).

You can back out if you want
but you seem to have an obscenely black-and-white view of this situation. 1 year/2 million is a slap in the face. That’s what I’ve been saying.
The only thing you don’t seem to be able to grasp, at all, is the idea that somehow, maybe, just possibly, the Angels are capable of giving Garret a FAIR contract while also keeping Teix. Because, as you may or may not know, there are contract values that exist somewhere between 1 year/2 million and SO LARGE THAT IT IS PROHIBITIVE TO THE RE-SIGNING OF KEY PLAYERS. You’ve repeatedly refused to even accept this. That is why I’ve found your suggestions absolutely ludicrous.

Comparable veterans to G.A.
David DeJesus. Aaron Rowand. Nick Swisher. Ichiro Suzuki (only categories Ichiro has him in are SBs and AVG, and the latter not by a whole lot).
Rowand and Ichiro are overpaid, obviously. G.A. is producing at all of their levels at an older age, showing persistence as he gets older. If any of them went to free agency right now, even at Garret’s age (and Ichiro isn’t that far), they’d spit in your face, rightfully, at a one year/2 million contract. If a person alive had the balls to offer it.

(yeah, the player no longer decides, either. I think that’s Gary Carter’s fault?)
If Vlad gets a ring here, odds are he goes in as a Halo. Otherwise, MLB may throw another bone to the Expos (since Vlad’s all-around game WAS more fearful back then.)
That is, if he goes in at all. (I always worry about the ever changing benchmark of thos who have an official vote on these things.)

especially if he resign with the Angels. His MVP season was with the Angels and all his playoff appearances too.
Going in as an Expo would be an embarrassment to MLB. The team failed and was sent to DC. Having a great HOF like Vlad as an Expo just puts a spotlight on an otherwise embarrassing 5-7 years and the joke the way they handled that situation.

Sure, we may sign him, but it’s gonna take a boatload of money to do it. Vlad has no interest in free agency. He’ll almost certainly take a discount to stay. My point is, sign Vlad now and worry about Tex when the time comes. We have the money to get both (if Teixeira will sign for a reasonable deal) and either way, letting Vlad go when he WANTS TO STAY HERE is the height of stupidity.

His “decline” is overexaggerated a lot on this site as well. Vlad only recently admitted that he hadn’t been able to get his weight over his back leg for most of the season do to strains.
Now, he says the problem has gone away, he’s swinging like he used to, and voila! Look, we’re seeing 2 knocks a game from Vlad most games, and he’s running the bases so much better: Hence, when he scored from second base yesterday on the wild pitch.

Aww
I like his flat bill. I mean, yeah, he kind of looks like a townie, but unlike every other poseur who wears a fashion-cap with a flat bill for whatever team, he actually likes baseball.
Take for example this kid Eric, who sits next to me at work. On any given day he may come in with a flat-billed cap for either the Reds, Astros, or Yankees. He hates baseball. He couldn’t tell you what a ground-rule double is to save his life. But his hippedy-hoppedy idols wear them like so, thus he imitates.
Bubblegum’s flat brim says “the difference between you and me is, I make this look good.”

Hey, I don't bend the bill of my hat,
And I am a full blown “fashion hat” collector (seriously have 14 different Angels hats). And I LOVE baseball. Admittedley, I am the exception rather than the rule.

Wearing a fashion cap for YOUR team is good
Very, very good.
Wearing a ballcap of any kind for an arbitrarily selected team with a dandy logo just because DJ Roofies does it too, that’s asinine.

Two generalizations in the same sentence.
I have countless New Era caps from teams that I could give a shit about. Is that asinine, of is it only if I am attempting to emulate? You make the assumption that people who wear their hats a certain way are doing so to copy the artists in a genre you wont even legitimize by creating a stupid name for a DJ that doesn’t even exist.
Point is, I pay around $30 a pop for a cap, and therefore will wear it however I see fit. Forward, backward, to the side, stickers on or off, Angel logo or not, or perhaps I’ll even staple it to my face if I deem it fashionable.
How many girls in malls, etc. have you seen wearing a Ramones t-shirt? You think the majority of those girls could name THREE songs from that band?

Bend you bill, man.
Zip up your fly.
Tie your shoelaces.
Straighten out those buttons on your shirt.
All the little things.
Learn how to wear your clothes.

Hey yeah...
And maybe we could all pass a measure whereby all American citizens wear school-type uniforms.
It’s time to eliminate that pesky free-thought. It only pisses off our great leaders, and none of us would want that.

I see having the freedom to think for yourself
is not being wasted on such things as flat-bill conformity, and is instead being used with laser-like focus to dissect the totally non-serious.

Not too bad.
The Halos are going to finish 25 1/2 games out, so there are plenty of home games with only us die-hard and core 5, 000 – 6,000 fans in attendance, and we can all sit on field level between the bases, and not one of us is on their cellphone. Halo Harry is wearing his straw hat and thumping is tambourine, and interrupting our chatter.
There are no whiny-assed freakouts out about any 1995 collapse (which is still in our future).
Messersmith is on the verge of winning 20 games, and in a couple of months we are going to dump the aging Fregosi for some bucket of bolts out of the New York Mets which will include Lee Stanton, and some kid named Nolan Ryan. I hear he throws pretty hard.
Someday, I swear, we are going to win a World Series.
Meanwhile, gas is only 35 cents a gallon…

Why? To appease the frivolous.
I have an idea. Call me crazy, but how about we concentrate on playing ability, and not the manner in which the bill of a cap sits on an All Star’s head?

He's the face of the franchise
Without him you’ll have a lot of half-naked fans at the park next year not sure what to do without the number 27 on their back… it would be the sexiest but saddest ballpark ever.

Point of pride
If there were any group of fans, of any team in the world, that could take the title of hottest female fans, I feel we could take it.
Even my co-worker, a hardcore Dodger fan, acknowledges, in his own words: “Angel girls are hot. Dodgers girls scare me.”
