Dateline Beijing: Michael Phelps beats second place finisher by coming from behind and beating him by one one-hundreth of a second! This ties him for the record for most gold medals in one Olympic games. In the men's 100 butterfly phelps time was 50.59, while the silver medalist had a time of 50.58. Is anyone else pumped up about this awesome US Olympic team? USA! USA!! USA!

Why?
China’s a country which is normal only in its abnormality. It is not a country which values civil rights in the least. It’s not a country which abides by any sort of ethical standards. Try and tell me those gymnasts were 16.
For chrissakes, they had a 9 year old girl lip sync the national anthem because the 7 year old was TOO UGLY. are you effing kidding me?

From the unbelieveable US comeback in the 4 X 100 relay to the Phelps 100-fly race last night, this has been so memorable. The fact some people are not watching this is a real shame. They are really missing out.

Do not care about swimming.
Or beach volleyball. Or archery. Or badminton. Or diving. Or synchronized anything. Or gymnastics. Or handball, shooting, water polo, weightlifting, or 15 of the other dumb “sports” in the Olympics.
I’m not discounting the skill or the dedication of the athletes, just the games in general. I know I could never swim that fast, or shoot a gun that accurately, or do anything with a group of ten other people in swim caps, but it’s just not important in my mind. At all.
With the fall of the USSR, the Olympics became irrelevant in my mind.
And besides, we’ll find out all the athletes are juicing. Once they invented PED’s, they became de rigueur, and always will be.

If you have missed Michael Phelps in this Olympics, you have missed something special. The swimming has been outstanding. The IOC testing is some of the best in the world.
The Chinese are the new Russians, you’d know that if you watched.
You are really missing out, these Olympics have been wonderful.

And I’ve seen China as compared to the Soviets, and you know what? They aren’t even remotely similar.
It’s just not that special, as bad as NBC wants it to be.

Oh, and with regards to testing.
I’m an engineer. A scientist. I know damn well that there are 800 things you can take that you’re not tested for.
I know Mark Spitz swam in a pool that was three feet shallower and 15 feet narrower, and thanks to the basic fluid mechanic of a “no-slip condition,” today’s athletes are at a distinct advantage. They wear bathing suits modeled after shark skin for hydrodynamic efficiency. They don’t have porn staches.
Trying to compare Phelps to Spitz is like trying to compare Barry Bonds circa 2001 to Babe Ruth. You can do it, it just isn’t fair.

chemicals or no chemicals
I disagree, you can compare their accomplishments. Spitz wasn’t swimming in an age where there are as many great athletes as there are now.
Yes the pool is larger and deeper. So what? He’s still winning these races against better swimmers than Spitz EVER faced.
The IOC testing is as good as any testing in any sport right now in the world. I don’t think Phelps is doping, he’s just amazing. And I am not sure you even insinuating he is. The IOC has already nabbed several dopers in these games. Not a one of them was a swimmer.
Lastly, I think you can compare China and Russia in some ways. Especially they way they train their athletes. It has been revealed that China selects their athletes starting a age 3 and trains them for Olympic competition- Russia used to do similar things.
And I completely disagree that these Olympics haven’t been special. I think you should try being a bit more objective. Did you see the opening ceremonies? The swimming has been amazing, volleyball has been great. The United States has been incredible in so many events. I have really enjoyed it, I am sorry you don’t think it’s “special.” I do.
Why do we have to scrutinize and analyze everything nowadays? Why must we be so skeptical? Why can’t we just appreciate greatness?
Michael Phelps has been great.

So you're saying that since the overall level of competition is higher we CAN compare?
That’s nonsensical also. In that case, we can’t compare generations because we don’t know what would’ve happened had Spitz trained against higher caliber swimmers. What if he had that ridiculous shark suit? What if he shaved his ‘stache? What I’m trying to say is that all this talk of breaking records is crap because the playing field isn’t level, and hasn’t ever been. This might just be a result of us, as humans, placing far too much stock in world records.
Look, I’m skeptical, but I’m not an idiot. World records shouldn’t fall every race of every Olympic games. What if some kid shows up next year and destroys Phelps’ records by a half second? I don’t know how you can see this sort of abrupt world-record destruction and assume it’s purely natural. The fact is that the pool IS deeper, the suits ARE more hydrodynamic, and there ARE more PED’s now than there were in earlier years.
China and the USSR are different in that the US and the USSR were in a struggle over fundamental differences in culture, posturing and nearly breaking into war for over a decade.
There are lots of ways to dope your body that don’t get tested. And more are being invented every day. And yes, I agree, it’s cynical to assume everybody’s cheating. But it’s also asinine to think that nobody is.
The opening ceremonies were cool, but they, like every opening ceremony, were pseudo-political displays of power. Seeing 2008 people playing synchronized drums is cool, but to me, that also says “We have a shitload of people, if we can do something like this, we can do anything, peacetime or not.” I also think they’re huge wastes of money and resources that would have been better spent on, oh, earthquake recovery.

Carl...well argued
I agree with you on most of those fronts.
I am saying it is sensical to compare Phelps and Spitz because it’s such a logical comparison, and one that can’t be avoided. Trying not to compare them is illogical and impossible.
They are both swimmers, both American, both won 7 golds in one Olympic Games. To make the argument that they can’t be compared is implausible. They have to be compared! Eras and time periods and everything else be damned.
I agree with you about China, the Opening Ceremonies was a huge demonstration of humanism. Perhaps the money could have been better spent.
China and the old U.S.S.R. can be compared on the level in which they train their athletes. For decades, the Soviets trained athletes from an early age to be professionals. Then sent them to the Olympics to beat the world and especially the Americans. The Chinese are doing the same thing. That’s what I meant when I said, China is the new U.S.S.R. China has ascended to a world sports superpower as the Soviets once were! The way the two governments have acted with oppression and tyranny is comparable. It wasn’t more than a couple of years ago that the U.S. thought China was building a nuclear arsenal. Sure, the times and players have changed, but there are likenesses there to be seen.
You said: “There are lots of ways to dope your body that don’t get tested. And more are being invented every day. And yes, I agree, it’s cynical to assume everybody’s cheating. But it’s also asinine to think that nobody is.”
I completely agree.
I appreciate this intelligent conversation we have had on this subject. I respect the way in which you have constructed your opinion. This is what this site and webpage are all about. Thank you. This type of conversation is what makes Michael Phelps and this Olympic Games so compelling.
Beijing 2008 has been riveting so far, I hope for no deviation in the coming week.

I enjoy arguments on open forums, particularly when whoever I’m arguing with isn’t calling me names. You back up your points nicely, and I respect that…it’s tough to find on the Internets these days. Usually people just call me a dumbass and leave it at that, which, granted, is one way to do it.
I also agree that Spitz and Phelps have to be compared…my only beef with that is that it doesn’t really give a fair shake to either competitor, so I wish the NBC coverage weren’t so ridiculous.
On athletes, I say, simply, Yao Ming…agreed. The poor guy needs China to leave him alone.

My two cents:
That’s why you do not compare Phelps and Spitz in terms of pool size, shark suit, and hydrodynamics. Those would be relevant if the issue was who was faster. But the issue is who is more dominant in his age. It appears as though Phelps is more dominant than Spitz. Yes, Phelps has more opportunities than Spitz had within any single Olympics, but Spitz has only himself to blame for wasting away his first Olympic games with more attitude than results.

I, for one, remain stunned that the Anaheim kid...uh, er...Tustin kid...oops...USC kid....DAMMIT...Croatian kid...
managed to lose that gold. Going through the end frame by frame on DVR, he had only 12 inches remaining between his fingers and the wall, with all his momentum behind him. Meanwhile, at that exact same moment, Phelps’ hands were all the way down, in the water, and still going backward as he was propelling himself in his final stroke. The Croate flattens his hands towards the parallel with the wall, further delaying his touch. And the – snap! – Phelps’ hands blow back down throught he surface and just barely beat the Croate to the wall.
I have watched that last stroke repeatedly, and from all the angles NBC provided. I agree conclusively that Phelps beat the Croate. But I still don’t understand how that happened.

Undoubtedly he finished better, but there is nothing "just" about it.
In normal speeds, Cavic finishes great. He has speed, and timing, and he has full extension, and he touches. Done.
But slow it down – I slowed down the NBC slo-mo replays – and Phelps finishes as though he jumps through space and time!
And, on DVR, it is clear that Phelps does win. Maybe I got lucky with my DVR, but my DVR has a frame with Phelps touching and Cavic not.

Reality check: The Brits are bitch-slapping us
As an American living in the UK, I have had to come to this humbling conclusion: Our Olympic team is getting the shite kicked out of it in Beijing by a race of binge-drinking soccer hooligans with bad teeth. That’s right, we’re getting bitch-slapped by the Brits.
Like any other country, the British media focus on the performance of their team in the Olympics, and yet another humbling day has gone by in which our team is smoked by the Brits in the gold medals. And I face another humiliating grilling from my British “mates” down the pub wonder how a country as big and powerful as the USA can suck so bad at sport. I have to force this down with a pint of lager, because they’re beating us.
To whit (I’m not a stat-head, but I have to back this up with numbers:
The US has won 26 gold medals (79 total)
The US has 303,111,027 people
This works out to 1 gold medal per 11.6 million people
The UK has won 16 gold medals (33 total)
The UK has 60,776,238 people
This works out to 1 gold medal per 3.7 million people
Ouch. OK, we fare a bit better when looking at total medals: Team USA has won 1 medal for every 3.8 million people, while Team Great Britain has won 1 medal per 1.8 million people. But the raw stats are still ugly, and don’t even think about how much worse it would be if Michael Phelps wasn’t on our team.
I hope NoDakHalo is right, and we’ll surge past the Brits in the running events near the end. But we’re not gonna win the 200meters, I’ll tell you that for sure … Usain Bolt is going to win that.
Woe is me. Get it together Team USA. Because I’m not sure I can stand another day of my lovely English wife merrily whistling a tune while she makes my tea, telling me how many more gold medals the Brits got today.

Exactly.
What good are sweeping generalizations if you cannot base them on old episodes of The Simpsons?

Not the first time I have received that response. Was that you way back when, too?

And if you want to see hot semi-naked people on beaches...
…really, Europe is your only option. We’re not quite so prudish about nudity on this side of the Atlantic.

To be fair...
…while, as a nation we’re having quite a good Games, it’s mostly because we rule the world at sports you can do sitting on your arse – so far, of our 16 gold medals, 13 have come in sailing, cycling or rowing – which is how we prefer our sports over here. Anything that looks like you’re having to try too hard is generally frowned upon.
If we can somehow get the IOC to also include all the sports that you can do in the Pub, while drinking beer (darts, snooker etc), we’ll have a chance at finishing top at the London games.

Athletes Per Capita?
Too lazy to do the research right now, but aren’t most Sports capped with how many athletes they can send for a certain event?
I know for beach volleyball only two teams could be sent for the sport, so that’s 4 women and 4 men representing 300 million.
Also, it seems like the US does well in team sports where multiple athletes get gold medals, but I assume only one counts towards a nation’s medal totals. (maybe scottnak could check the math) So if the US does better at Rowing Eights and Women’s Soccer and Softball and Baseball and Beach Volleyball and Swimming Relays and Tennis where multiple athletes are awarded gold medals, shouldn’t each team members’ medal count for Per Capita Purposes?
