I think we should all thank the Indians for their Little League style of play with the four errors and our four runs.

POTG:  Erick Aybar for his circus catch with bases loaded and one out and the score 4-3

But if

Aybar doesn’t make the catch then Frankies probably not in the situation to get the save.

One Game at a time the Mike Scioscia way.

by deejayelleseven on Aug 16, 2008 4:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

well on that note.......if not for 3 GIDP.......and the failed contact play

the halos wouldnt have needed to worry about any runs that could have possibly scored from that bases loaded situation.

CKD

Remember our discussion about yelling at people? Today, John Lackey vs Kelly Shoppach. Shoppach didn’t like a call and started talking to the ump about it. Lackey promptly began yelling at Shoppach.

Blog response? One attaboy to John. And you were in this thread. So I stand by what I said about the double standard. John yelling at people is team spirit. Frankie yelling at people is childishness.

Remember when kendall started a fight with lackey because lackey was yelling

at kendall for trying to draw a HBP

If GA wasn't so lazy the Halos woulda won the 2008 WS by now.

My computer and T.V. are in different rooms

I walk back and forth a lot, miss a lot of comments, and miss a lot of t.v.

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

by Zu Long on Aug 16, 2008 4:20 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

My first comment wasn't until 10 minutes after that

I didn’t see the play, so I don’t really know the context…I didn’t see the whole game. But again, my personal position is, generally speaking, what it was with Frankie.

Context matters some, so I can’t tell you what I think.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 16, 2008 4:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Just curious, but don't you have DVR?

I thought you mentioned it in the topic.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 16, 2008 4:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, I do

but the problem today wasn’t that I didn’t think to DVR the game.

It was that I went to bed at 5:00AM, and slept through the start of the game.

Man, I feel lazy.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 16, 2008 4:51 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Nope. You hate all tantrums

of any type. Apparetnly, context does not matter.

But let’s take you out of the equation. Per Zu’s point, and the same point he was trying to make in the other thread, assume that he is correct about Lackey (since nobody is disputing that). Read the thread and note the marked lack of vitriol. Then compare to the hatred directed at Frankie, with and without rants about his temper. ZU’s point about there being a double-standard should be painfully obvious.

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

by Stirrups on Aug 16, 2008 5:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

lol.........come on.....people have double standards all the time.......

and anyone who deny’s it well…….yeah…..just proved my point.

*denies*

http://bills.sportsbloggingnetwork.com/

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 16, 2008 5:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It doesn't sound to me like Lackey threw a tantrum, at least from what you people are telling me.

and if you can’t differentiate between a tantrum and just yelling something at another player? Well, that’s not my problem.

K-Rod threw a childish, petulant, spoiled brat tantrum on the mound the other day…nothing anyone has said to this point implies that Lackey was anywhere near that…“Lackey yelled at Shoppach” certainly doesn’t seem to suggest it.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 16, 2008 6:06 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

And based on the fact that Frankie yelled at the ump and got his ass canned

and Lackey did not, I would say that I’m not the only one who thinks some kind of line was crossed. If we could go back and watch Frankie and Lackey side-by-side, something tells me you’d see quite a bit of difference.

And aside from that, I never denied that there wasn’t some kind of double-standard. Zu came in and singled me out for not attacking Lackey today…despite the fact I wasn’t even in the game thread when the play in question happened. I didn’t say a double-standard doesn’t exist, all I’ve said is that I shouldn’t be held accountable for it. Trying to prove that I have the double-standard because I am against players throwing tantrums, but not necessarily against a player yelling a comment at another player doesn’t prove shit. I didn’t even see the damn play, but it sure didn’t sound like much.

by Caseys Kiss of Death on Aug 16, 2008 6:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

plus plus plus......John Lackey was the winning pitcher in the game 7 of the 2002 world series.....

he could murder a thousand ants with a magnifying glass and my opinion of him would never change!

http://bills.sportsbloggingnetwork.com/

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 16, 2008 6:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Well Frankie won 5 games in the 2002 postseason

So neener, neener, chicken deener.

Seriously though, there is a major difference between Lackey punching Shoppach and telling him “he’s gotta be kidding” and Frankie going off on the umpire as he’s getting yanked. John didn’t throw a tantrum and Frankie, while emotions were running high, got pissed at the umpire. Apples and oranges.

Now I, for one, would be a proponent of Frankie instructing his latest K victim to f#@k off and go to hell on a check swing. I’m not too crazy when the recipient of smack talk is the ump, resulting in getting tossed.

End of post and apologies to YWC if this post ran on too long…

by Big Easy Halofan on Aug 16, 2008 6:49 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

lol i hope you meant "punching" (and left out the "out") as in Striking out....

otherwise people might misinterprete what you said…..

http://bills.sportsbloggingnetwork.com/

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 16, 2008 6:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Glad you caught that...Freudian slip???

Though it would have been more interesting to see John punch Shoppach, as opposed to have simply punched him out.

by Big Easy Halofan on Aug 16, 2008 7:37 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Lackey did not have a hissy fit...

As he was walking off the mound he told Shoppach “Are you kidding me?” as he was running down the first base line, and that was pretty much it.

by cupie on Aug 16, 2008 7:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It sounded like more than that in the topic

and depending on who one believes, Franky’s argument with the umpire only happened when the Umpire made a nasty response to a perfectly legit question on Franky’s part. If Shoppach had given Lackey crap about it, do we really believe he would have left it at that?

Agreeing with Cupie...

Eybar it is…

Soon to be joined by Eckstein at SS…is a trade looming? I wouldn’t mind seeing SRod and BWood getting some PT at SS too come Sept…

Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August...?

Yeah,

by red floyd on Aug 16, 2008 4:38 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

no need for Eck really......

the Halos have tons of options at SS – Aybar, FIggy, S-Rod, Wood…….how many SS do you think the halos need?

http://bills.sportsbloggingnetwork.com/

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 16, 2008 4:49 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i'd rather see wood

gets some ABs than make a trade for anyone (Eck, really?).

Aybar was The Man on that play. unbelievable!

Go Angels!

by Four Ts on Aug 16, 2008 6:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

ya, all eckstein does is win rings

who wanst that. lets watch prospects instead.

getting eck would be as much for the presence and peace of mind of having eck in the clubhouse and available off the bench. Id trust eckstein in a pressing situation in october A HELL of a lot more than wood or rodriguez. the guy won a world series mvp just 2 years ago!

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 16, 2008 8:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

that should tell you something about the "quality" of that WS.......

nothing against Eck….but he doesnt exactly conjure up images of WS MVP when I think of him.

http://bills.sportsbloggingnetwork.com/

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 16, 2008 9:02 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

my stance

is that we already have quite a bit of power in our lineup with tex, vlad, hunter, rivera, GA etc.

what if a game in the playoffs comes down to laying down a bunt or hitting it to the right side of the infield to advance a runner? This is all hypothetical, but if Aybar were to go down i feel like while Wood adds more potential pop, i still would want eckstein in there in a big moment. Fans of this team should know home runs arent the only way you win games and you just dont know how a rookie is going to respond under that kind of pressure.

I just dont see the problem with having an experienced backup

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 16, 2008 10:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

only one problem when dealing with "what if's"

they might not happen…….

That game...

Was WAY too nerve racking. Seemed like Cleveland was ALWAYS just about to score. I think I lost a good amount of my hair during that one.

Lackey

Angel Pitching, Angel Defense - get past that.

by vladtheimpaler on Aug 16, 2008 4:32 PM PDT   0 recs

In a game where it was hard to pick a POTG...Aybar is a logical choice

unless Cleveland defense is an option…

Where hk47 is trying to decide what is more overrated...closers or saves...

by hk47 on Aug 16, 2008 4:44 PM PDT   0 recs

Yeah, it IS hard to pick POTG for this game

if, and only if, one discounts KRod. Once you do that, we are kind of left handing it to a guy who went 0-3, but saved the tying run with a nice catch.

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

by Stirrups on Aug 16, 2008 5:06 PM PDT   0 recs

Nice Catch

It was a “superb” catch with the bases loaded with one out in 7th. While I agree that Frankie has gotten the short end of the “Panther” stick; that was a game saving and winning play by Erick. Who knows if Frankie gets in the game if he does not make that play.

by cupie on Aug 16, 2008 5:36 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Let's all stop with the if if if. We are starting to do too much of that around here.

It is what it is, and that is what we deal with.

I ain’t going to quibble over the quality of the catch. POTG is a subjective award and that’s the fun of it all. You guys got your value assessment of the starting degree of difficulty of that performance while I have mine. We both agree that he gets a perfect 10 for execution. And I realize the magnitude of the timing.

IMO, Frankie’s effort throughout the bottom of the 9th was greater than Aybar’s but, POTG voting being just like the game, it is what it is.

The biggest question of the day, however, is that since you were issuing POTG, how did you manage to overlook GA?

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

by Stirrups on Aug 16, 2008 6:34 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Baseball is agame of WHAT IFS for the fans

What if the runner goes, what if they pitch out, what if they are putting ona hit and run, what if they come back and tie it, what if they bring the infield in….

by Rev Halofan on Aug 16, 2008 9:56 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

But those are forward looking.

There is a trend around here to re-invent the past with waht ifs, that did NOT happen, in order to justify some opinion.

Is this not a quibble?

by cupie on Aug 16, 2008 7:46 PM PDT   0 recs

That's quibbling over the selection, not the catch. Different subjects.

And I am not even quibbling over the selection. I am wondering how it happened that you passed up a chance to elect your hero to POTG when you had the helm? It used to be instinctive…

Aybar

was GREAT all day in the field. The catch was only the most glaring example of a solid, solid defensive effort. Cleveland’s joke defense made his play today look even better.

For me Aybar gets the nod NOT simply for that catch, but for a full day of solid plays at SS. It was close though – Frankie was solid when he had to be.

by ViolaHalo on Aug 16, 2008 8:00 PM PDT   0 recs

I would be Ok with that, but that was not the reason given.

The reason he was given the POTG was “…for his circus catch with bases loaded and one out and the score 4-3.” Uh, that’s one play. I’d stack up Frankie’s entire 9th against anybody’s single play.

Now, Aybar had something like 7 total put-outs, including that play. If the POTG had been “for Aybar’s sterling defense, culminating in the defensive gem of the day at the absolute crucial point in the game”, I might not have said anything.

by highlandhalo on Aug 17, 2008 8:40 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh, bullshit.

The more everyone wraps their hard-on around that one play, the closer Aybar’s glove gets to enshrinment into the Hall Of Fame. It didn’t even make the Top 5 for that day on Baseball Tonight, so it’s not like I am alone out here with my opinion. Look, it was a fine play. If you want to call it the best you have seen in your life, go ahead.

Yes, I am on the record on this site defining the current process that members go through when selecting which player to honor in victory. I have stated that the process should be changed. Since this clearly bugs the fuck out of you (my only f-bomb for the past several months, by the way), other than my sig I shall never make any reference or comment or post concerning POTG form this point forward. And if you feel my sig is too much, and don’t want to see it ever again, you know what to do.

P.S. – Insulting me by calling me “bitch”? Rule 4 violation. Not so honorable coming from someone with the authority of site operator.

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

Accepted. Thanks.

I do have thicker skin. Being surrounded in your own home park by asswipe Yankee/Red Sox fans through 30 years of misery will do that for a guy.

I can pull it out if I have to, and I would have had you not been the ONE dude against which the better shots I get in, the closer I get to getting smacked with the BAN button. In this case, I felt handicapped and that left me frustrated. The f-bomb was the quickest way to shut it down that I had in my toolbelt.
