Rumours and Rumours of War... David Eckstein

The big rumour on this blog, the internet, and the radio is that the Halos might trade for beloved David Eckstein.

It seems like the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim already have plenty of depth to survive the bummer of  "The Boy King" going down for the season and the playoffs.  I guess the thrust of all the rumours is if Aybar goes down, who do we replace him with?  Figgins,  Brandon Wood, Gary Discarcina, or if you ask Acuda Kendry Morales?

Thoughts?

And Rumours of War is a song by metal band High on Fire

Back on topic, I don’t see any way the Halos bring back Eckstein. Hell, maybe the Angels should try to get Troy Glaus back for the stretch run as well.

Rotate him in with Aybar……….

Stay on the damn bag!!

Dumb to the extreme

And we won’t do it because I have to assume somebody in the front office realizes how dumb this would be.

I love Eck with the best of them...

however, I don’t want to give up anything and I think we have options…Figgy can play some SS or Wood or SRod.

Honestly, I think this could actually be the ideal means to break BWood in finally. He appears to be “getting it” and taking off @ AAA…next year is his for the taking! What better way to instill that playoff winning attitude and get some playoff experience for the many years to come! This is an incredibly deep team…how did we get this deep…by giving Izzy, Eybar, Howie time to learn and deliver…Wood has been up plenty of times before, but never with the opportunity to play nearly everyday. I suspect he could play nearly everyday come September, spelling Figgy and Eybar…

Eck had his turn here and it was good! Let’s leave it alone…

Whodathunk we would be rooting for a former Ranger come August...?

wordz

i saw wood playing last week in sacramento, and was impressed with his plate discipline. now don’t get all uppety with me and say “well that’s minor league pitching he’s patient with.” In woods defense, the starting pitcher was dana eveland (who has been playing all year with oakland). his defense looked good as well. i too love eckstein with all of my heart, but this one has to come from within. call up wood!

...and oh by the way

BWood today…3-5, 3 rbi, 2 2b, .297 avg

man, that guy is hot right now.

now would probably be the best time for a call-up, if he was given playing time.

If only he could face AAA pitchers in the major leagues!

Anybody know a team like that on the schedule?

Witty .sig goes here.

im disapointed there wasnt a "hell yes" option

you cant have too many guys that know how to play in october. Even with aybar healthy we dont have that at short. If for some reason aybar were to go down, i would be mortified by the idea of Woodriguez playing short in meaningful games.

they couldnt even make contact in normal games and we ALL were on their case by the time izturis and figgins got healthy. I cant understand how quickly everyone forgot about that black hole they built at the bottom of our lineup.

and pitching only gets tougher in the playoffs. Dont see why you want to possibly leave this awesome season up to a couple of prospects that failed miserably in their chances

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 16, 2008 8:36 PM PDT   0 recs

What would it cost?

What in the wide wide world of sports is a goin on here?

by AlohaHalofan on Aug 16, 2008 8:52 PM PDT   0 recs

At what price?

If it’s for cash and third rate prospects then go for it!
I don’t have any delusions that Eck means a auto WS trophy, but the little dude’s a gamer who I trust more in the clutch than a green Wood or Sean-Rod.

by KendrickExperience on Aug 16, 2008 9:24 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Eckstein

Botom Line:
Eckstein’s bat at its absolute best is replicated by Figgins and we do not need two of those in the lineup.
Eckstein’s defense is not even comparable to Brandon Wood’s.

by Rev Halofan on Aug 16, 2008 9:50 PM PDT   0 recs

While Eck would make a great sentimental acquisition

it just makes no sense.

the only thing it would accomplish is kicking Aybar in the balls and completely gutting his confidence. what we need to do is get 100% behind him and let him play; that way, he’ll be ready to go come October, and he won’t be doubting his ability.

by howiestheman on Aug 16, 2008 10:00 PM PDT   0 recs

i think it would be as the backup to aybar

like an insurance policy. aybar has shown that hes not necessarily an iron man, so it does make some sense. A veteran with not only playoff experience, but 2 rings and a WS MVP is probably the worst backup to have in case of emergency

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 16, 2008 10:15 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i hear ya

but if Eck came back, they’d platoon.
i have no doubt about that.

right now, Aybar needs to know that management has faith in him, more than anything.

Mike Scioscia: He provides to unlike method of your team member.

by howiestheman on Aug 16, 2008 10:25 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i agree

im all for aybar playing every day even if eckstein was here and hopefully scoscia would recognize the importance of aybar havin his faith.

eckstein gives you the 2nd base/SS depth still though which would enhance his value as a bench player. If howie goes down, your forced to use rodriguez. If its aybar, you at least have the option of Wood.

The problem is that while both COULD come through, theres no reason to expect it yet.

eckstein is still hittin at .275/.355 rate this year which is by no means embarassing for the bench depth

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 16, 2008 10:41 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Probably not

But after the Tex trade, I’m not nearly as absolute in my opinions.

You know what they should do?!?!

They should bring Percy back!!! We should start chanting that at the games and get Percy back. Who’s with me?!?!?

by docescobar07 on Aug 16, 2008 11:00 PM PDT   0 recs

Honestly, if the Rays were out of the race

I’d be all for it assuming they didn’t have to give up much — Percy would be better than Speier/Loux

When it comes to Eckstein, I’m only for it if they don’t have to give up anything of value. They don’t need Eckstein, but having more depth couldn’t hurt.

Below average offense, and a mediocre glove?

I’ll pass.

I don’t think I honestly ever loved him half as much as most Angels fans did, anyway.

I accidentally hit yes.

But I didn’t mean it. Sorry, Eck.

On a side note, I’m probably WAY late on this, but I had never heard the nic, “Boy King”, and I’m not sure why, but it struck a note with me. I like that a lot. So how long ago did that train depart that I missed when I passed out at the depot?

The Boy King train passed by you some time last year

One of Izturis’ first nicknames was the Pharoah (because he looks like King Tut), and Boy King was just a logical extension of Pharoah. Can’t remember who gets credit for either nick.

Eckstein and Clone Wars

I just found out that Eckstein’s wife is the voice of that young girl Jedi in the Star Wars: Clone Wars movie. Weird.

Sure why not he is on a one year deal.

So if Aybar gets hurt, we are prepared to let Brandon Wood be the starting shortstop in the playoffs?

a veteran shortstop is an insurance policy and probably be had as a waiver deal with cash considerations or low level prospects. If we stick with the Wood route, he needs major league at bats again to see if he can hit major league now (as opposed to his career .134 mark).
