Poll: where does Frankie rank?

Obviously we have been spending a lot of time wondering if he is going to be resigned and how much he should get, but I think first we have to know: Where does he rank among baseball's best closers?

We all hope he sets the all time record for single season saves, but his peripheral numbers don't seem mind boggling.  I mean his ERA is almost 3, but 4 of the other closers in the top 10 in saves have ERA's under 2.  ERA is not exactly the best stat for relief pitchers, of course, you also need to account for how they do with inherited runners, and if they are in the National Minor League or not.

So, my question is, where do you put K-Rod?

Poll

you talk about getting a heart attack when you watch KROD

go watch CJ Wilson try and close a game, and lets see how bad of condition your in after that :P

that wasnt my point

my point was if you guys think watching Krod is going to give you a heart attack, just watch CJ in the 9th

my point was the CJ wilson shouldnt really have anything to do with this

If Kobe Bryant is supposed to be the best player in the world and youre making a case for him, the best argument probably isnt “he’s definitely better than luke walton”

people arent saying frankie is not good but just that there is, to some people, 1 or maybe 2 guys that they feel are better overall closers. and that was the poll. Obviously everyone regardless of their answer is happy CJ wilson does not close for us

Don't get me wrong

I am nowhere near confusing CJ with any of the best closers. What my underlying thought was that you guys should be happy with what you got in Krod, who if not the best closer in baseball, is definitely a close second behind Rivera.

Rivera

and then frankie and nathan are probably 2a and 2b

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 18, 2008 10:31 AM PDT   0 recs

rivera, nathan...

then you have a group that’s tied for third — frankie, pap and maybe Soria.

Go Angels!

by Four Ts on Aug 18, 2008 1:31 PM PDT   0 recs

Don't you think Soria ought to do it more than once before he's in that group?

Just like JJ Putz last year, a lot of guys can be dominant for one season.

truth

ask derrick turnbow how the closings been going as of late

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 19, 2008 11:19 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd put Paps above Frankie....

Mariano, Paps, Nathan are better, IMO. I also think that Lidge and Wagner can be in the conversation. I’d take Frankie before Wagner, but Lidge would make me think. I really ask that a closer not walk too many people. Frankie is all about the walks.

Also, Soria is solid, but like someone said above – let’s make him do it for a few years before putting him in a class with this group – a group that has done it for 4, 5 or 6 years (or more).

by jimmuscomp on Aug 19, 2008 6:11 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Lidge?

In Houston they claim that “Lidge” is the spanish word for “blown save.”

GA GA he's the man, if he can't do it, no one can

by Moondoggy on Aug 19, 2008 11:35 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Fair enough...

His peripherals were always very strong, though. I forgot about the year of utter suckitude from his recent past. But, he was great before and since that time. Notice in his awful year he gave up a Speier-like 10 HR’s. Also notice that his K’s were through the roof still. His stuff never waned – he had a bad year. I’d take a bad year over diminishing stuff any day of the week…

Going forward, I’d still think about Lidge before Frankie.

by jimmuscomp on Aug 19, 2008 11:46 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There are methods, and then there are results.

Some guys have better, quieter, saner, methods. Many people admire methods.

But Frankie rules results. Nobody beats Frankie for results. Nobody. And results are what counts on the scoreboard.

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

by Stirrups on Aug 18, 2008 7:10 PM PDT   0 recs

This is not just about results...

How a closer gets the job done is important. Walks and home runs are the worst thing a closer can give up. Frankie walks too many guys and is prone to giving up the long ball.

I think Frankie is great, but closers with lower BB rates and very low HR totals are going to be better/more effective than guys like Frankie. The fact that Frankie has 47 or so saves is mainly an indication that the Halos – in the first half of the season – didn’t score enough runs to put games away. This REQUIRED Scioscia to use Frankie more than normal. That is all. If there are a lot of save situations, closers will get saves. Period.

Should Frankie be commended for kicking ass and getting the saves? Absolutely. But, his BB rate and HR totals (as well as his diminishing K rate) are cause for concern. Mariano, Paps, Nathan and even Lidge are better when looking at the stats.

Just sayin’…

by jimmuscomp on Aug 19, 2008 6:18 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

well put

I think frankie is a great great closer and i dont think anyone can really argue otherwise. He converts a fantastic amount of his opportunities.

I think what is troublesome to some people though is that the way he gets them done doesn’t really instill confidence that he can do it forever. His fastball being less effective is a major cause for concern and coupled with his tendency to walk, could lead to more blown saves than hes used to in the future.

like the above post, closers with lower walks and more Ks(frankies are a little down this year) are more sure things.

by ihearhowie2.0 on Aug 19, 2008 11:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Gee.

And here I thought that they handed out World Series trophies based on actual results, not style points. What was I thinking?

Are you actually going to try and tell me that Frankie’s past years are not meaningful? That only this year is to be considered? And that this year he is uniquely fortunate to get a lot of chances? And that he actually blows his chances at a higher percentage rate than all those others, and that your math proves why? So you are going to convince me that, based on your stats, Frankie blows a way higher percentage of his chances than the others, but he gets soooo many more chances than everybody else that it only appears as though he is the most successful?

Really? Is this where this is going?

The problem is this year and last year aren't in line with the previous 4.

If they were, he’d be considered the best or at least on par with Rivera rather than a notch below – which isn’t exactly the horrible criticism everybody seems to be making it out to be.

by snowhor on Aug 19, 2008 11:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No, Stirrups....

Frankie’s past years are very meaningful. Especially when you look at stats beyond the save totals and realize that his K rate is dropping, his BB rate is rising and his velocity is lower than in the past. If his numbers and stuff were exactly the same in 2008 as they were in 2005/06 then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. My point is that Frankie is not getting better – as his save total might suggest – but he is actually getting more hittable and putting more runners on base. These are not good trends for closers – elite level like Frankie, or craptastic piles of shit like CJ Wilson.

His reduced numbers in all the rate stats mentioned in the above paragraph tell me that he is declining – just a bit – but declining nonetheless. That tells me that his great save percentage could diminish in the near future.

Just my opinion, but that’s my point. Do I think he is still an elite level closer? Yep. Do I think he is going in the wrong direction? Yep. I have less confidence in Frankie this year than last year and that is based on stats and WATCHING his performance. He isn’t as solid as he once was and his numbers tell me that it is going to get worse in the future.

by jimmuscomp on Aug 19, 2008 11:40 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh. I though we were talking about who IS. Not is is GONNA BE.

Francisco Rodriguez: 193 career saves. 2 career Panthers, tied with Hector Carrasco.

by Stirrups on Aug 20, 2008 4:14 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Basically...

I am discussing Frankie with regards to whether or not the contract he will probably get is going to be worth it. My thoughts are that his inflated saves total will get him $13-$17 million per year on the open market. In that scenario, I do not think he is worth the money – I don’t see him aging well.

If he will stay in Ahaheim for $10 – $12 million per year, I’d sign him. But, not for more than 3 years. He won’t go for that – so I see him walking after 2008 – and he probably should walk if he and his agent want $15 million per. He just isn’t worth that. Period.

but i’ve never seen any evidence that Frankie’s an asshole, so…

by yeswecan on Aug 20, 2008 10:27 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

There maybe one or two or three guys statistically better

But K-Rod has the saves and while that doesn’t merit anything [except if K-Rod was any other closer in baseball], I’ll take him over Rivera, Papelbon and Nathan.

Gawd, I can only imagine if Troy Percival was having the same year K-Rod was at 26 – I can assure you, no one would be bitching about Troy’s peripherals and everyone would be wet because Troy was saving all these games.

by BBFan1 on Aug 20, 2008 2:21 PM PDT   0 recs

WOW

My poll made it to the recommended list! Thanks guys!

Anyway, ERA has big problems ranking closers, and who cares how scary it is if he walks some dudes and still gets the job done. But if you think Frankie is the best in baseball, I guess it can just be said you are one hardcore Halos fan.

Lets ignore the National Minor Leaguers and just check the stats that matter:

Who – Saves – BS – Losses
Frankie – 47 – 5 – 2
Nathan – 34 – 3 – 0
Papelbon – 33 – 4 – 3
Soria – 33 – 2 – 2
Rivera – 28 – 1 – 5
Percival – 27 – 3 – 0
Jenks – 25 – 3 – 0

Interesting that the best closers are all on contenders plus the guy on the Royals (WTF?)

Most of these are in line with past history, except the Royals dude is new, and Percy was back. Rivera has never been THAT impressive in the regular season, but we all know what he does in the playoffs.

Nathan – Rivera – Frankie seems to make sense. Lidge might have his mojo back, so maybe he skips ahead too.

Bottom line of all this is it doesn’t look like Frankie deserves a record breaking contract for a closer, but a top 3 contract makes sense.
