According to my book of Who trivia
Keith Moon was screwing around in the studio after he finished his drum track and was distracting the rest of the band members and making everyone laugh when they were doing the vocal tracks. So Townshend kicked Moon out of the studio but he tried to sneak back in at the end, prompting Townshend to shout “I saw yer!”
Townshend still shouts that line whenever the Who play the song live.
