Garland and Rivera

Garland for the overall award, Rivera for the hitter award. I don’t care what people say. Yeah, his home run was nice and so was his sac fly. He also killed two rallies by grounding out. Once with the bases loaded and once into a double play when Howie had just gotten on in the 8th. That basically killed any chance we had of scoring a run to tie the game. Rivera continues to go one step forward and about six back.

Rivera can't be botg!

The groundout with the bases loaded he actually hit pretty hard and the one in the 8th was almost a single up the middle. Figgy did NOTHING to help the team.

Are we going to play the "almost" game now?

Figgins shouldn't even be leading off anyways

When was the last time this guy had a good game as a leadoff hitter?

Well considering he has the highest OBP of anyone on the team outside of Tex

I definitely think he’s the guy to have leading off. He’s been STRUGGLING since May and his OBP is still right around the team average.

by MH252525 on Aug 18, 2008 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd rather have Aybar lead off at this point

And then have Kendrick bat second.

Seriously?

Aybar, and his .321 OBP? Do you have any idea what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do? Do you know what an OBP is?

So the man who left the most runners on base ...

… is exempt from this discussion? How fun.

Someone else has to step up sometime.

Any number of other guys contributed less to this game than Rivera.

So, like I said, the man who left more men on base ...

… is apparently exempt from blame because he went yard and had a sac fly? Is that what you’re saying?

well Vlad left 3 on base.......

and had an error which caused an un-earned run to score………but yet i dont hear you say anything about him?

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 18, 2008 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Forgot about Vlad's error

He jumps Rivera then. I must have blocked that error out for how stupid it truly was. My bad on that one.

problem with this argument though is that Vlad still contributed on the offensive side of the ball

2-4 RBI, where as..Figgy…0-5 3K’s…….and didnt really do anything the entrie game.

by norcaliangelsfan on Aug 18, 2008 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vlad did leave a RISP with 2 out

Rivera left 2. But I did forget about Vlad’s error which allowed a run to score.

It’s quite weird. Today, whenever Tex got on, Vlad got out. When Tex got out, Vlad got on. Interesting.

just like they did in july….after June’s horrible showing….and this month hasnt been nearly as bad as that one…….plus…….still up 15 games……and texas is losing……sooo…..no biggie.

Yes. That's what I'm saying.

He drove in two runs. Hit a homer. Hit the ball hard 3 out of 4 times. Can’t ask much more than that. Someone else needs to step up.

He didn't save squat

That was all Teixeira. Rivera threw to second when no one was there. That was a dumb play saved by a great one.

by FlyByKnight on Aug 18, 2008 7:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was Teixiera following up the runner like he was supposed to.

Rivera saved at least one run by getting it in from the wall quickly. Barehanded snag then a throw that one-hops to the follow-up guy is a great play.

~Till the Halo burns out...

by Zu Long on Aug 18, 2008 7:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Throwing to no one in particular, but rather the bag

… is a dumb move. Rivera got to the ball quickly, but with the ball being smoked as hard as it was, it’s not a miracle that he got it off the wall without a problem. Rivera made a dumb throw that was saved by a great play from Teixeira. Simple as that. There’s no way you can argue otherwise.

Where is Howie and Aybar on that?

Thats not the way you run the cut, or trail! Ball was smoked and there was a play at 2nd. Not exactly a guaranteed double as proven

Willie Mays Aikens is FREeeeeeeee

by Angel Aviator on Aug 18, 2008 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

How you can argue that getting it in quickly was a bad move?

He spun and threw it to the bag where SOMEONE should have been— in this case, that person was Teix, who was there, and put the tag on. If he does anything else, run scores, Upton has a double. Therefore, great play.

Yes

because Rivera did good things. You can’t expect him to do better than 1-3, with a sac fly in addition. It’s unreasonable to expect a player to do better than .333. Heck, that’s better than Rivera generally is. It’s a matter of luck (the bad kind) that he got his HR with the bases empty. The fact of the matter is that he hit a HR, and drove in another run besides. He was the offensive star of the night for the Halos, and therefore not blameworthy. Try blaming someone who didn’t make a positive contribution.

I'm just saying you can't blame him for hitting the ball hard with the bases loaded.

It was right at the 2B. Move on and hope for better luck next time. Figgy who needs to make contact to take advantage of his speed is just wailing away and strikes out 3 times and hits 2 weak grounders to the right side.

If EVERYONE had the game Rivera did then the Angels are leading 9-6 right now. If everyone had the game Figgy did then it would have been a perfect game.

Are you the one that kept telling Soth to play GMJ instead of Rivera despite GMJ hitting next to 200?

Figgy for sure

0-for-5 with 3 k’s from the leadoff spot? Methinks that is a tad unacceptable…

by tbone_cutter on Aug 18, 2008 7:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Definitely has to be Figgy

The guy is doing next to nothing right now and I’ve traditionally been one of his biggest supporters. Just when you think the guy has turned a corner into a legit leadoff guy by putting together over a season of great numbers he throws in half a season of essentially crap.

Call up Wood and give him some abs.

by MH252525 on Aug 18, 2008 7:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Wood is raking right now

So it would be smart to bring him up. I’m in favor of moving everyone up a spot in the order. I think Aybar should leadoff with Tex batting second. It’d allow Aybar to see better pitches for which would help him get on base more out of the leadoff hole. It’s just an idea to throw out there.

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." - Sir Winston Churchill

by FlyByKnight on Aug 18, 2008 7:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Aybar is already right ahead of Tex though so I doubt he'd see better pitches.

I don’t understand why the lineup goes Tex and then Vlad at all though. If it went Vlad then Tex I think that Vlad would see better pitches and never be intentionally walked. Tex doesn’t need protection the way Vlad does because Tex can actually make the pitcher throw strikes or take a walk.

by MH252525 on Aug 18, 2008 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Tex is a better three hitter than he is a four guy

But, it wouldn’t hurt to flip things around to see how it works. Why not bat Howie second for a while? Let him get out of his slump.

So giving him more AB’s gets him out of a slump? Amazing!! People want Vlad on the bench because he is not hitting and another wants HK up in the order when he is hitting .250 ish over the last what 15 games?

This is actually a good time to slump

When we pick our good play back up we will be close enough to the playoffs to carry the momentum into October.

If you peak late you will fizzle as soon as the Division Series begins and get eliminated. Often it seems the hottest team gets the farthest in October, not the best team.

I brought sexy back, but they only gave me store credit....

went something like 21-1 before getting swept in the WS…..and you can blame that on the fact they had to wait so long for the Red Sox to get there……..same with Detriot when they lost the WS to STL.

that leading the AL West means absolutely nothing. I don’t want to hear any further comparisons or hear how the Angels are running away with the division. Useless.

Now the DingBats are only .5 game behind the Angles for the best record in baseball.
